The Lee Kings - Complete Collection

The Lee Kings were a short-lived Swedish rock quintet who rode the wave of the British Invasion to multiple appearances in theTop Ten of their country's singles chart in 1966 and 1967. Formed in 1964 as Lenne & the Lee Kings, founding members included Lenne Broberg, guitarists Bengt Dahlén and Bjarne Möller, bassist Olle Nordström, and drummer Lasse Sandgren. Nordström parted ways with the band in 1966 and was replaced by Mike Watson. The next year, Johnny Lundin would replace Möller and Tony Walter took over for Sandgren before the band dissolved. After hitting number two with their song "Stop the Music" in January 1966, they topped the chart with their sole number one, "L.O.D.," a month later. Both tunes appeared on their 1966 debut album, Stop the Music, which was fleshed out with three tracks by Stockholm's the Sunspots and released by the Grand Prix label. "Why, Why, Why" from the RCA Victor LP Bingo! made the Top Ten later that year, and "I Can't Go on Living" was a summer hit in Sweden in 1967.

The Tages- Tages (1965)

The Tages- Tages (1965)

The Tages were without a doubt, the best Swedish band of the '60s and one of the best '60s rock acts of any sort from a non-English speaking country. Although the group's first recordings were pretty weak Merseybeat derivations, in the mid-'60s they developed a tough, mod-influenced sound that echoed the Who and the Kinks and recorded quite a few originals, making the Swedish Top Ten over a dozen times in all. More than any other continental group, the Tages could have passed for a genuine British band, following the U.K. acts that served as their obvious inspirations into hard rock, Baroque pop, and blue-eyed soul. Big throughout Scandinavia, the group actually made a determined effort to crack the English market in 1968, playing quite a few U.K. shows and releasing records there; they failed, and disbanded at the end of the year. The Tages evolved into Blond in the late '60s, a pop-oriented group who had an album released in the United States.

Members:

Lennart Grahn (vocals), Tommy Wahlberg (guitar, vocals), Kit Sundqvist (keyboards, guitar, vocals), Svante Elfgren (bass), Tor-Erik Rautio (drums).

The Shanes had about a dozen Top Ten hits in their native Sweden between 1964 and 1967, but were absolutely unknown to listeners who spoke English as their first language. Not that the group deserved any better. In the manner of some other Swedish bands of the time, they valued versatility, adaptability, and mimicry far more than individuality or expression. Thus they were able to competently ape an astonishing variety of foreign trends, including Shadows-styled instrumentals with a country twinge,'50s rock oldies, Merseybeat, British R&B, Europop, bloated American pop/rock, and more. They did write much of their own material, but this was often blatantly derivative. Even their best song, "Chris-Craft No. 9" (a number-two hit in Sweden in 1967), lifted a lot of its parts from Herman's Hermits "A Must to Avoid."

The Shanes were in addition to the Hep Stars, the day and Ola & the Janglers one of the four dominant in Sweden in the 1960s pop groups. They were justified by Tor -Erik Rautio, Tommy Wåhlberg, Staffan Berggren and Svante Elfgren. In the fall of 1964 came Lennart Grahn of the Marshalls in Luleå this. The name was - according to legend - of a film role name of John Wayne ( Shane, 1953) accepted. The Shanes were located in the far north of the country in Kiruna.

The first plate was in the spring of 1963, the instrumental single Gunfight Saloon (B-side: The Ripper ), which made it after a short time in both national radio hit lists ( " Tio i Topp ", " Kvällstoppen " ), but only for just one week. With the Singel Let Me Show You Who I Am The Shanes 1964 came the first time at number one of Tio i Topp. In the same year they released their first LP ( Let Us Show You ).

The real breakthrough came in 1965 with the change from the record company Odeon to Columbia and the appearance of an EP together with the Stockholm band Moonlighters. 1966 published six singles, including blues feeling and Hi- Lili, Hi -Lo, which could be placed in both the Tio i Topp and in Kvällstoppen. Other successes joined in the following years, partly recorded in the EMI studio on Abbey Road in London ( including Chris-craft no 9 ).

Staffan Berggren, who until then had written most of the music, had to - because thought it was the other as too dominant - 1966 left the group. In its place came Kit Sundqvist, who also took over the role as songwriter. It met the group that four of its members were drafted into military service in 1967, and succeeded in the further course not, adapt to new musical tendencies, so they ended towards the end of the 1960s their activities.

The Shakers From Göteborg (Sweden)

The Shakers From Göteborg (Sweden)

The Shakers was a Swedish pop / rock group founded in Gothenburg in 1962, named Rangers, but changed 1964 names to The Shakers, since a previous band with the same name had ended, consisting of Tommy Rander (song), Roger Lцfwendahl (guitar) , Bo Bцrjesson (drums) and Kjell Andersson, called "Ploppen". In the spring of 1965 Roger finished and was replaced by Gцran Andersson. In September of the same year, he was replaced by Conny Цrling and Juri Wiik, while Rander released the guitar on stage and became a renowned singer. In May 1966, "Ploppen" Andersson was replaced by Glenn Fahlman. The debut band of the band, a messy cover on Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business", hit a hit in Sweden in 1965, reaching a fourth place on the top ten. In 1966, their second and last ten came in the top with "All I Want Is My Baby", reaching a fifth place. In the years 1964-68, the band made over 700 gigs

Hillbilly Five - Top Twenty

Hillbilly Five - Top Twenty

(wikipedia)

****

Hillbilly Five was one of the Swedish gang uncontrollably mixed songs from all of their favorite artists but it was singer Christer Eriksson, who was the greatest country music enthusiast. Start picking it much material from Elvis Presley, The Shadows and The Spotnicks but after a while took country music material upper hand. (wikipedia)

Between the years 1963-68 gave Hillbilly Five out a series of singles, EP, and not less than three LP-plates. An impressive hindsight given that the group did not have a single drop placement on either Top Ten or Kvällstoppen. But selling tiles, they must have done anyway, because during this time there was not a hot rod or jukebox that was complete without Hillbilly Five's version of John D. Loudermilk's "The Great Snowman '. (musiklandet.se)

Jerry Williams - Action (1966)

Jerry Williams - Action (1966)

Sven Erik Fernstrom (15 April 1942 – 25 March 2018), better known by the stage name Jerry Williams, was a Swedish singer and actor. He began his career as the lead singer of The Violents, before launching a solo career. In 1962, Williams joined The Violents, a Swedish band that was formed in 1959 and primarily influenced by the English guitar group The Shadows. The band had a number of line-up changes. But when Williams joined in 1962, he became the frontman and the lead singer of the band. The single "Darling Nelly Grey" in 1962 was credited to Williams and the Violents and became a major hit. When Little Richard performed at the Star-Club in Hamburg in 1962, both Williams along with The Violents and The Beatles were opening acts. When The Beatles toured Sweden in 1963, Williams and The Violents were the opening act. The Violents folded in 1966. In the 1960s, Williams recorded a track with record producer Joe Meek. The track was called "The Wonder Of Your Love". It was never released and was found amongst Meek's tapes when he died. It can be heard on YouTube. Williams' music style was soul-influenced by the end of the 1960s, which led to the song "Keep On" which became a hit in Sweden in 1969. He returned to the rock and roll-based music in the early 1970s and performed with the band Roadwork until the early 1980s. Also during the 1970s he toured with the band The Telstars.

The Hounds ‎– From The Hounds With Love (1967)

The Hounds ‎– From The Hounds With Love (1967)

The Hounds -- also sometimes referred to as "the Hound" -- were a Swedish rock band of the mid-'60s, organized in 1965 by 19-year-old guitarist and singer Henrik Salander and his friend, singer Jan Ahlen. The group -- whose other members included Lars Wallander (guitar), Jan Brathe (bass/vocals), and Janne Onnerud (drums) -- had a decided orientation toward pop/rock, with an emphasis on harmony vocals and mainstream fare. Their first major hit was a sung version of "Exodus" in 1966, which reached number three in Sweden; they charted the following year with a cover of Brian Hyland's hit "Sealed with a Kiss" at number two, and hit the number one spot the same year with their version of the Tokens' hit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." They later hit number six with their version of the Chad & Jeremy hit "A Summer Song," and closed out 1967 with a number four placement on "I'll Take You Where the Music's Playing." Their only chart record of 1968 was a number four hit for "The Gipsy Cried." But they also covered topical material such as Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'," and seemed to have had more strings to their bow than the soft pop of their singles. Additionally, they did record some excellent originals, mostly written or co-written by Salander. And they even brushed up against the pop side of freakbeat with a crunchy, guitar and brass-driven rendition of "Hi-Ho Silver Lining" that could have easily charted anywhere in the world.
Based on the recorded evidence, The Hounds were at least as solid a group as, say, the Hep Stars or the Hootenanny Singers. With their emphasis on covers, they were roughly Sweden's equivalent to the Marmalade or the Tremeloes. But they never pursued music as long as any of those other groups -- as it turned out, The Hounds' key creative member had other, bigger fish to fry. The quintet broke up in 1968 when Henrik Salander decided to pursue higher education full-time, a move that may have cost music some pleasant pop sounds, but otherwise seems to have benefited not only Sweden but the entire world. In the decades since, Salander has pursued a long career in international affairs as a respected diplomat, and among his other activities, he has headed the Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Office in the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was the Secretary-General of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission. His interest in music didn't desert him, however -- he once delivered a report on nuclear proliferation to the United Nations sung to the Beatles tune "Yesterday." As for The Hounds, they reportedly have reunited on occasion for one-off performances.
