Apple Adjectives and More!

We are working on using describing words to add more detail to our writing. This week, the students used the five senses to describe apples and wrote the adjectives with approximate spelling. We glued the adjectives to our apple painting project. In the computer lab, we used Microsoft Office Word to create a document with the sentence, I like ____ apples best. The students practiced keyboarding skills and learned how to select font style and size, change the color of the font, search for and insert clip art of an apple and how to resize an image.

Bucket Filler Award

At the end of each day, one Bucket Filler Form is drawn from the bucket and read aloud. The student who filled someone's bucket receives an award for being a Bucket Filler!I found these bucket filler form printables online, copied them on colorful tagboard and decorated them with stickers to make them special!

Taking Turns

In order to encourage fairness and respect with attentive listening during sharing time, I use several different turn-taking methods such as 'pick sticks', pass the talking stick, and Turn-Taking Teddy. We pass Teddy on for Daily Five rotation selection. Students who get Teddy are prepared with their materials for another rotation.

Rewarding Positive Behavior

In our classroom, we have a We Show Great Bee-havior poster and magnetic bees. Students work to stay in the green hive by following our classroom rules and expectations! They color in their Cooperation Card daily and then bring the card home to their parents at the end of the week to sign and return on Monday. Students can earn a token to be spent on candy and novelty items from the prize box. They really look forward to token trading day!

Tag Necklaces

Ojibwa students are awarded specially designed tags for a variety of achievements as well as for participation in special school events and teams. In first grade, our children work to earn tags for Accelerated Reader points and certifications. They can also earn tags for sight word memorization. This is my son's tag necklace. He started earning them in kindergarten. He still proudly displays his tag necklace in his room!
