Sterling Heights Nature Center

Here are a few pictures of our field trip to the Nature Center! We really lucked out with the weather and were able to go outside looking for critters. Inside the center, the students got to touch a fox snake and a box turtle. Who knew turtles like to eat bananas? The Nature Center would be a great place for the whole family to visit! A flyer from the center will be sent home soon with more information on the special activities offered throughout the year.

My Too Cute Crayon Wreath!

While following other teacher's blogs, I saw a cute picture of a crayon wreath. So off we went to Joanne's to pick up the supplies for this craft! I found suggestions for a design and directions online. We used a wire frame, three boxes of crayons, two widths of ribbon, some plastic hands and lots of hot glue! The chalkboard was made by hand with construction paper and balsa wood and the apple formed from Sculpey clay.

Another year older and wiser! But Whooo's counting?

September is my birthday month. I thought it was so sweet that Arnold and his family surprised me with this giant cookie! Owls seem to be a really popular decorating and fashion trend this year which works out great for me since our school mascot is the Ojibwa Owl. One of the gifts from my family was this owl charm for my Pandora bracelet.Cute, huh?

Computer Lab

Every Friday, the class visits the computer lab. We usually begin with a lesson or demonstration on the skill for the week. This week, the students learned how to use the program Bailey's Bookhouse. We practiced word families (rhyming words) and reading direction words like over and under.

Being a Writer!

As part of the Being a Writer program, we work to build a community of writers and work on appropriate listening and speaking behaviors. The students share their writing pieces in the author chair or on the document camera. They love this time to shine!

Addition and Subtraction on the Smart board

We've started a new unit on addition and subtraction in math. The students practiced sums to ten using this Smart Notebook ten frame activity. We are learning about writing addition sentences, looking for key words for joining in word problems and math vocabulary such as plus, equals, minus, sum and difference.
