Christmas in July and Sunny Classroom Supplies

My goal this summer was to work on new items for the classroom geared toward my move back to second grade and also to edit some of my earlier items to add new graphics and make them even cuter!

Here is my latest update for the Smartboard Gingerbread Man Activities! If you already purchased it, go back into your purchases to get the newest version! These are just a few of the slides. Click on the first picture to see it at my shop!

I'm spending money shopping for my new classroom like it were Christmas lately! I am leaving many of the things I have for the new teacher who is moving into my room and starting with a clean (and hopefully well-organized) slate. I have so much that I have collected and purchased over the last 20+ years and the thought of having to move it all is a little overwhelming! I've seriously considered hiring a moving company! I will have only two weeks to get it all done because my classroom is being used for summer school. I'm excited to share before and after pictures with you!

Here are some new items I found that are really great and will be a nice addition to my brights theme!

These book tubs look nice and sturdy. I found them at Really Good Stuff. I love that they allow the students to see the covers and are wide enough for picture books. Our school uses Accelerated Reader and my books are organized according to AR level, so I need many baskets. These are a little pricey, but will be worth the investment if they hold up for many years! I'm going with the yellow, but they come in a rainbow of colors.

My director chair is getting faded and it's time for a new one. I found this chair in yellow too!

My last chair was given to me as a gift from the class. On the seat canvas the children added their thumbprints with puffy paint and my room moms wrote each child's name on the chair with fabric markers. It was so cute! I'm going to decorate my new chair with colorful polka dot lettering and add my name to the top canvas. I found this one at Directors Chairs.com. Unfortunately it's out of stock at the moment. I guess I was not the only one who liked it!

I already have these sets and lots of other stuff from Really Good Stuff and I think it will all go very nicely together with my brights collection.

If you have not yet visited my shops, I have a matching rainbow behavior clip chart freebie there!

The colors in the Swirls and Curls set when printed are much brighter than they appear in the picture. I think it'll be a great match. Click on the picture to see it!  I'm going to work on a rainbow set and see if I like that one better!

On another note- I sent off a folder yesterday with all of my design elements to Becca at Jumping Jax Designs. She is working on my new blog next week. I am really excited to see how she is able to put together the graphics, backgrounds and theme that I have chosen. She is awesome! It is totally custom and totally me! Counting the days for my blog like I'm waiting for Christmas too!

Have a fun weekend!

Font Tip and July Giveaway

Finding the perfect font and font size for your classroom creations can sometimes be a challenge. When working to create my new Play Dough Fun Letter Mats for my kindergarten and first grade teacher friends, I needed to find an open font for commercial use and make it large enough to fill. I have found that PowerPoint is the easiest to use for the items I create. The only problem is that there is a limit to the font size you can select for some of my favorite cutesy fonts.

Here's a tip or two learned by trial and error :):

Create a text box in a word document. Type in the font size and select your favorite font. Type what you need to and then copy and paste the text box into your PowerPoint and you can get the size you need that way.

If you are creating a SMART Notebook file and want cutesy font, type what you like in a document, then create a JPEG or PNG image of your wording. Insert the image into your Notebook file. That way the font itself will become part of the file.  My Back to School Calendar Math was created in this way. It was a bit time consuming, but I created the wording so that it is general enough to be used in other files I create later on down the road.

So here is the link to Play Dough Fun:

SmartBoard Calendar Math~ Back to School, Sale and a Freebie

It's not even been a week that we've been out of school and I'm already anxious to begin creating items for next year! I'm super excited now because I just found out that I'll be moving back to second grade! I will miss teaching first grade but love the second grade curriculum and the fact that second graders are more independent. A plus is that I'll be working with a fun team of teachers that I have worked with before!I will have to say goodbye to my First Grade Gallery blog...

In the next month, I will have my custom blog up and running! I am very happy with the elements that I selected and can't wait to see what the designer can do with them. I will let you know where to find me when the time comes!

This is my latest creation that I think is just too cute and I hope you will too! Those of you who have worked with SMART Notebook files know that it can be very time-consuming to create activities but so worth it because the kids are wildy motivated to use the SMARTboard! There are fun links to other sites in this file and I animated some of the pages to include cutting paper sounds for ordering months and days and glue drop sounds when they are put into place. If you have favorite songs for calendar time, directions for how to add those to the page are also included!

My students had a great time making their Father's Day Scrapbooks! I wish I would have taken a picture of the inside pages of their books because they are all so different and creative! I recruited Moms to help out and it went very well! I'm sure the Dads will love receiving them today!

St. Patty's Day Math for Smartboard

Last week was super busy and lots of time was spent on testing for school improvement goals and report cards. Watching my students take their Star Math test was a real eye-opener. Yikes! I can see we need to spend a lot more time on ordering numbers before the end of the year. Here is something I made for the Smartboard for extra practice during March.

I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful technology in my classroom!

I'm wondering how many of you have Smartboards in your rooms. If so, drop me a line and let me know how you use it for instruction or ideas for Smart lessons you wish were available.

The Smart Exchange has many great lessons available for download, but if you're like me, you probably agree they need some TLC!

Here's another fun activity I was inspired to create after attending a common core in-service training. This is an activity to practice sums to 5, 10 or 20. I found all green :) dark chocolate mint m&m's at the grocery store I thought I would use for this. I'll have to set some aside for myself before the kids play!

So, you laminate the cute work mat. Then have the students shake and toss the counters over the mat- (I'll have to do some coaching or have the kids just work on the floor). They count and record the number of counters that landed on and off the mat.

Sounds like good simple fun! I can't wait to try this out. The only problem is, the kids won't be able to eat the m&m's if they are being tossed onto the floor and tables. That would be a true test to the claim, "melts in your mouth not in your hands"! I might have to rethink the candy idea....

You can play this on-off game with any mat and any type of manipulatives. I am going to work on creating other cute game mats in more holiday themes.

Here's the game in action! The students loved this activity! I ended up using green bingo chips as you can see.

Each student was asked to bring in a green treat to share. We had pickles, cucumbers, green peeps, Jello, candies, cookies, rice crispie treats and much more!

Here's a darling leprechaun craftivity I purchased from A Cupcake for the Teacher! I decided to attach a different writing paper, one that I made and offered as a freebie at my store.

The students are working on writing to tell more and they sure did with this great writing prompt!  I had to shorten the project by skipping the legs and just glued leprechaun shoes to the bottom of the paper.

Here are the leprechaun kisses treat bags I made. The poem is also a freebie.

I have so many ideas for projects but not enough hours in the day to create them or take pictures and post the ones I do! Baby steps....

Have a super weekend everyone!
