Art by Committee: Randall

It’s February 15, time for the results of last months Art By Committee challenge. The line we had to illustrate was "Randall's avatar was a tortoise." You all came up with some really fun and creative solutions to the idea. Click on the link below the name for a larger image or more information about each piece.

Art by Committee: Randall….and the one from the original sketchbook.

With that, let’s give the Art-By-Committee game a rest for a while. I have enjoyed and appreciated all your wonderful contributions, but it takes quite a bit of hand work to put these together. Also, I’ve run through most of the material in the original sketchbook.

Art By Committee: Conversation

It’s the 15th of January, time for our group sketch game called "Art by Committee." The way it works is I share a science fiction quote and you come up with a picture to go with it.

This month the starting point was a very long, and rather dull, conversation between "Billy" and "Souci." You all rose to the occasion with some creative solutions. Thanks, everyone, for participating.

Art By Committe: Cinderella

It’s the 15th of December, and that means it's time for our group sketch game called "Art by Committee." This month it was the Business Card Challenge. Your job was to start with a real business card (taken off a bulletin board 25 years ago) and figure out who it belongs to.

Art By Committe: CinderellaThe Cinderella maid service card sparked some creative character studies. What really happened after the fairy tale ended? Scroll down and find out, and be sure to follow the links to the artists' sites to learn more.

Art By Committe: Gray Fringe

It’s the 15th of November, and that means it's time for our group sketch game called "Art by Committee." The way it works is I share an excerpt from a science fiction story and you come up with a picture to go with it. This month the quote was :

“He is shorter than I remember, and thin. His fur is grayed to white in a fringe around his head, just below his ears. His coat is dull, thinning, and coarse. His eyes, so bright I…”

As always, the results are impressive and incredibly varied. Nice work, everybody!

Six Foot Chicken

It’s the 15th of October, and that means it's time for our group sketch game called "Art by Committee." The way it works is I share an excerpt from a science fiction story and you come up with a picture to go with it.

This month the quote was :
"I became immediately and irrationally angry. How dare this six foot chicken with a silly red crest on top of his narrow foolish head say that we humans were deficient in feii? I controlled...."

You all had fun with the story and the annoying chicken. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Art By Committee: Chains

The 15th of September has arrived, and that means it's time for our group sketch game called "Art by Committee." The way it works is I share an excerpt from a science fiction story and you come up with a picture to go with it.

This month the quote was "He stood and held his arms out before him, pulling the chains taut. The muscles in his shoulders and his chest bunched, standing out in sharp relief, and a moment later, the chains snapped cleanly."

Everyone had fun dealing with those elemental forces, and the results are wonderful.

The 15th of the month is the day for a group sketch game called "Art by Committee." The way it works is I share an excerpt from a science fiction story and you come up with a picture to go with it.

This month the quote was about running into a big ugly something-or-other:

ABC: Harvard Depository

The 15th of the month is the day for a group sketch game called "Art by Committee." The way it works is I share a prompt and you come up with a picture to go with it. This time we started with a business card:

ABC: Harvard DepositoryI must admit that I thought the assignment was unpromising, but I was blown away. You came up with some amazing characterizations for Trudy and imaginative ideas for her environment. You can practically smell the dust on the bookshelves.

ABC: Harvard DepositoryHere's my solution. To show you how clueless I am, I thought Trudy was a guy’s name until Jeanette pointed out it’s short for Gertrude. And all I could think of for “depository” was a piggy bank.

Now get ready for next month. The quote for July is: “But when the dots did not vanish even after he scrubbed his fists across his eyes three times, he shouted hoarsely…”

ABC: Harper

The 15th of the month is the day for a group sketch game called "Art by Committee." I share an excerpt from a science fiction story and you visualize it.

This month's quote was: “The harper began to sing. His deep voice was fine and sweet, eloquently expressing his intent. He sang of the bitterness of defeat and the gut-wrenching carnage of war. He sang of boys…”

Your solutions took the quote in a lot of interesting directions, from lyrical to surreal to surprising to straightforward.

ABC: HarperAnd the one in the original sketchbook, which I hasten to explain was drawn by a whole group of science fiction artists at a fantasy convention. They were making a little fun of the tradition of filking, a brand of folksinging that could be found at cons.

ABC: HarperFor June let’s try the business card game. I picked up this card more than twenty years ago. It was publicly displayed in a restaurant along with thousands of others, but I blurred out the last name anyway. I don’t know anything about the person except what’s on the card. Your assignment is to illustrate the owner of the card and his or her profession based just on the card itself.
