Domino Best Rooms

Domino Best Rooms
Above is a photograph, from Habitually Chic, of the new special edition issue of Domino magazine.  I am so delighted that there is a new issue, but moreover I am excited that this one is really great.  I will admit that I was quite underwhelmed with the first Domino special edition.  After such a long wait, I was disappointed that the first new issue didn't really have the feel of the original magazine.  This Best Rooms issue, really improves upon that.  Best of all, this issue featres a look back at some of my favourite home tours - including Rashida Jones, Jenna Lyons, and Laura Vinroot Poole

Below are a few images from Domino's facebook page.  I will be shocked if I don't get the urge to get out all the old issues tonight.  It really was the best home decor magazine.

House and Home does J. Crew Decor!

My fabulous mom texted me to let me know about this awesome feature on the Canadian House and Home website! I used to love when Domino magazine would do "Outfit to Room". What could be better to beat a case of the Mondays than one of my favourite magazines pairing looks from one of my favourite stores to great decor!

Kitchen Breakfast Nooks

There is nothing that I enjoy more than a lazy weekend morning with a huge cup of hot coffee and the newspaper. With little indication that winter is leaving Ontario any time soon, I take solace in the fact that the cold does create a gravitational pull towards this cozy morning routine. I was fantasizing about breakfast nooks today. Above is an image from the kitchen of Katie Lee (formerly Joel) as featured in Domino magazine a few years ago.

This is one Domino image that I always come back to. I was going through this issue on the weekend and I still love this set up.

A crisp white breakfast nook, again from Domino Magazine.

Finally, a casual take on the breakfast nook from Mary's Home on Apartment Therapy.

Tickled Pink

This colour scheme, from a very sweet birthday party, featured on Shelter inspired me. It is getting towards February, where pink and red are colours of the season. Whether you love or loathe Valentine's Day, I do always enjoy the injection of colour in a regularly gloomy month. Anyway, back to the sweet shades of pink and red . . . .

Michael Penny featured these Emerson Made flower accessories on his blog today. I love the soft pink and yellow combinations. I featured Emerson Made here and here after discovering Emerson and Ryan's work through A Cup of Jo.

This is the Silk Betty Layered dress from Banana Republic. It's actually available in a Dark Steel, but I just love the Deep Rose shade. It makes me think of bright bursting Peonies in the spring!

It may sound silly, but I'm a sucker for really good pens - kind of like how Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks talk about bouquets of newly sharpened pencils in You've Got Mail. Maybe it's just a common teacher trait. Anyway, these Staedtler ones are my absolute favourites. Linking this in with my desire for all things poppy and pink today, I had to go buy a few this afternoon . . . .my pink one had died from overuse!

Last but not least, I've always loved the soft and subtle touches of hot pink in this Domino Magazine feature. I stumbled upon it while scouting through this feature on Apartment Therapy.

Rue Magazine November / December Issue

Rue Magazine November / December Issue
In case you didn't know . . . the November / December 2010 issue of the on-line magazine Rue is spectacular!! I just looked at it this evening and immediately started thinking about how much it would cost me to print out the entire issue. There is so much variety of style, colour, trends, and plenty of house tours to feast your eyes on!

Here are a few images (of MANY) that caught my eye . . .

Make sure to check out the entire issue, this is just the tip of the iceberg! The feel really reminded me of Domino Magazine and Lonny Magazine.

Jenna Lyons Apartment

The Brides.com archives of Domino magazine have been slightly expanded, as promised a few weeks earlier. They now include a slideshow with the Brooklyn home of J. Crew's fairy godmother . . . the brilliant Jenna Lyons. This is one of my favourite Domino features ever, simply because Jenna has such clear direction in her taste. She clearly executes a look that is a striking statement and completely original but with classic elements. Here are some highlights!

I have this bathroom fixture earmarked for the future . . . I have a similar globe right now that I just put up . . . found it at Value Village for about a dollar. Eventually I'll get the real thing.

And last but not least, no literary guru could resist the name Beckett (Jenna's son) displayed lovingly across the wall.

Deborah Needleman

Deborah Needleman

I was flipping through the daily imprint this morning as I was drinking my coffee and perusing the web. I noticed on the sidebar that Deborah Needleman, editor of Domino Magazine, had been interviewed / featured. I immediately clicked to read all about it.

My pronouncement of love for Domino Magazine might seem incessant but it really was wonderful. I felt as though it captured the mix of young traditionalist-modernist-fasionista-working woman. There are plenty of magazines that I go to for all these things, these particular sides of my personality and personal aesthetics, but there are few that can put all of them together in a magically perfect way. Domino did that.

The interview put a smile on my face, in large part due to Needleman's response to the question "Who inspires you?" :

"People with great style who live easily and happily with it. Many seemingly stylish people are pretty awful — fussy and uptight. But I am interested in style that is expansive, that makes lives more beautiful and the people in your life happier."

Sundays are Special

Sundays are Special

When I was little Sundays always seemed special. We would wake up to a delicious smell wafting from the kitchen - my mom baking muffins or scones or pancakes. Then there was the inevitable rush to get dressed for church, followed by afternoons avoiding homework, and Gramma coming over for family dinner in the dining room - again something delicious.

These days a little leisure and a lot of coffee on Sunday, before getting down to business, has become the routine.

Sundays, past and present, are just wonderful in my estimation. Hope you're enjoying yours.

Domino Resurfaces!

Domino Resurfaces!
The best news ever was conveyed to me through the charming blog Well Worn. The delightful Nicole Warren, posted about : Brides.com setting up a gallery of Domino archives. It seems that Brides magazine is a Conde Nast publication, which explains why they would have the rights to the photos and accompanying articles.

Everything isn't there, but I am just tickled pink that I can access the beautiful work of the Domino journalists, designers, etc. Hopefully Brides.com will continue to add more Domino galleries.

Happy reading!

Osborne and Little Love

I absoluely love Osborne and Little wallpaper. Frequently featured in small rooms or accent walls in magazines like Domino, I came to gravitate towards the Asuka pattern - found in actress Claire Forlani's bedroom, featured in Domino Magazine's October 2006 issue.

Find the Asuka pattern here: http://www.osborneandlittle.com/osborne-&-little/asuka-weaves/fabrics/asuka/
