Infidel (Bel Dame Apochrypha Volume 2) by Kameron Hurley

Winners x 6 - October 16, 2011

The Question:  What woman or women inspire you?

bmb80 who said...

I’ve been anxiously awaiting Infidel (which has been forever) since I wrapped up God’s War.

Love the question.

It takes a special woman to inspire others and what’s more special then a mother? She was the person who made me embrace odd things about myself that others (even grown ups) said was not normal—she called them my gifts.

She taught me to be inspired by the people who offer you something of value without asking for anything in return, such as the florist who felt that I, a total stranger, was in need of a simple hug and a rose because she thought I looked sad when I walked by her stand. She was right.

The nurse that prayed over my mother years ago when she was sick in the hospital and told me everything will be all right.

My sixth grade teacher who gave me hard time who I believed hated my guts but pushed me because she cared, and although I didn’t know it at the time, she’s one of the reasons I’m a writer today and changed my life forever.

This is living proof that those we consider ordinary are absolutely extraordinary.

Blood Rights (House of Comarré 1) by Kristen Painter

Winners x 6 - October 16, 2011

The Question:  Who is your favorite Urban Fantasy heroine or hero?

SeaLionMama who said...

My favorite heroine of all time is Cat (AKA Catherine, Kitten) from Jeanine Frost Night Huntress series. She is about as real as a half vampire can get. Not only is she relatable in regards to her insecurities, she kicks A$$! In every book Cat gets better and better as a person, but still has the inate ability to care about someone else other than herself. She would sacrifice herself and her feelings to make sure the people she loves (or actually anyone that is the underdog or needs help) are not harmed. Her love for humanity is what makes her the most deadly heroine in my eyes. She doesn’t forget what brought her to that point in her life and she takes what she has learned and grows from it… That makes a hero a hero…

The Question:  Science Fiction or Science Fantasy?

Sinnaye who said...

Science Fantasy for sure. I'm not too keen on the whole science fiction-idea, but the fantasy equivalent of it rather sparks my imterest.

Interview with Kristen Painter and Giveaway - October 4, 2011

Please welcome Kristen Painter to The Qwillery.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Kristen:  I have to have a title. Books don't feel real to me unless I have one, so even though it might change, there has to be one in place before I can start writing.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Kristen:  Both, although I plot as little as possible because my books rarely want to follow the path I've chosen.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the House of Comarré series?

Kristen:  I had an idea - a mysterious woman in a slinky white dress that dipped low enough to reveal a gold tattoo. My heroine, Chrysabelle, grew out of that idea and everything else followed.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do to create the world in the House of Comarré series?

Kristen:  I researched a lot of things that got no more than a passing mention, but I felt like I needed to do it for my own sense of backstory. Things like the sounds a panther makes, the history of executioners in France, the treatment of gypsies in Europe, the physiology of blood, snakes. That kind of stuff.

TQ:  Describe Blood Rights (House of Comarré 1) in 140 characters or less.

Kristen:  Underworld meets Memoirs of a Geisha

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Blood Rights?

Kristen:  It's impossible to answer that question without giving spoilers, so I'll just say there are a few at the end of the book.

TQ:  In Blood Rights, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why?

Kristen:  None of them were really difficult. That book pretty much poured out of me.

TQ:  Do you and Chrysabelle have anything in common?

Kristen:  We're both blonde, but that's about it. Although I do love the idea of a gold tattoo.

TQ:  Do you have a favorite character in the House of Comarré series?

Kristen:  When I'm writing them, they're my favorite. I can't pick one over another!

TQ:  How many books are planned for the House of Comarré series?

Kristen:  There will be five. And possibly, if my editor likes it, a spin off series.

TQ:  What's next?

Kristen:  What's next is book five, Last Blood. But what's physically next is I'm headed to NY Comic Con October 14th - 16th. I'll be on a panel with some amazing authors, so if anyone's going, stop by and say hi!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery

Kristen:  Thanks for having me!

Flesh and Blood
House of Comarré 2
(Orbit, October 25, 2011)
Interview with Kristen Painter and Giveaway - October 4, 2011
With the ring of sorrows still missing, and the covenant between othernaturals and mortals broken, Chrysabelle and Malkolm's problems are just beginning. Chrysabelle still owes Malkolm for his help, but fulfilling that debt means returning to Corvinestri, the hidden vampire city neither of them is welcome in.

The discovery that Chrysabelle has a brother could mean reneging on her promise to Malkolm, something that might make him angry enough to loose the beast living inside him. And fulfilling her vow could prove devastating for Chrysabelle --- especially when you throw in power hungry witches, dead fringe vampires, and the Kubai Mata.

My thoughts:

Blood Rights is the first book in the House of Comarré series. The Comarré are bred to be the most pure blood sources for noble vampires. As such they are highly valued. Blood Rights centers on Chrysabelle and the events that occur after the murder of her blood rights owner, Lord Algernon. Chrysabelle flees to her aunt in Paradise City, New Florida. She’s put in touch with Mal, a vampire who is considered anathema by vampire society.

Blood Rights is a terrific book. I’ve read many stories where the supernatural exists alongside of an unknowing humankind. This is one of my favorites. The world building is just so good – the mysterious House of Comarré, the machinations of the noble vampires, the world of vampires and beings outside the mainstream. There were little things I really enjoyed as well. For example, the names of the five houses of noble vampires delighted me. Against the backdrop of this wonderfully created world is a truly absorbing mystery. Who killed Lord Algernon and why?

Kristen Painter has not only created a fantastic world but has filled it with well-crafted characters, both primary and secondary. Chrysabelle and Mal are great foils for each other. The tension between them is well set up. The characters are multidimensional, even the truly horrific villain. The pacing of the Blood Rights is spot-on from beginning to end.

Blood Rights is one of those books that is a sheer joy to read. It features exceptional world building, fascinating characters, and a captivating story. I'm thankful that the second book in the series is out in November and the third book in December.

I give Blood Rights 5 Qwills.

Kristen Painter - House of Comarré - Covers - June 8, 2011

I had the pleasure of meeting Kristen Painter at BookExpo America in May. I also picked up an ARC of the first book in her upcoming dark Urban Fantasy series House of Comarré. Three books have been announced and they will be released in 3 consecutive months starting in October 2011. The covers are really exceptional.
