Interview with Delilah S. Dawson, author of the Blud series - May 5, 2013

Please welcome Delilah S. Dawson back to The Qwillery!  Wicked as She Wants, the second Blud novel, was published on April 30, 2013.

Interview with Delilah S. Dawson, author of the Blud series - May 5, 2013

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery!

Delilah:  Thanks so much for having me back! I loved being part of the Debut Author Challenge last year.

TQ:   Tell us something about Wicked as She Wants (Blud 2) that is not in the book description.

Delilah:  There's a cameo from Criminy Stain. :) Princess Ahnastasia is kind of his celebrity crush.

TQ:  There are 2 novels and 2 e-novellas set in the Bludverse. Which were easier to write? The novels or the novellas?

Delilah:  Novellas are easier for me since they're 1/3 the size and much more straightforward, plot-wise. But there's always this vague sadness that you'll never get to hold a physical copy in your hands or see one in the bookstore.

TQ:  Which character has surprised you the most in the Blud series so far?

Delilah:  The ones that surprise me the most are the ones that just pop up from nowhere while I'm writing. Emerlie was completely unplanned and has been in almost every Blud story. In this book, the dandies were a surprise and are based on two of Atlanta's best dressed steampunk guys. My subconscious loves to play tricks on me.

TQ:  You live in the world you've created in the novels/novellas. What do you do there?

Delilah:  I do tricks on the backs of bludmares in Criminy's caravan. :) I might start up the first flying trapeze, too. I'm a Bludman, of course.

TQ:  What do you wish you'd known when the 1st book came out that you know now?

Delilah:  To be quite honest, when I wrote the first book, I was unaware that many people consider the word "gypsy" to be an ethnic slur. Since writing Wicked as They Come and even Wicked as She Wants (which was written a year ago), I've become far more sensitive to the fact that gypsies might seem like a fun trope in a book but are also a people who have been persecuted. I plan on running an apology in the Acknowledgments of book 3, and if any of my readers have been disappointed in my use of the word "gypsy", I apologize.

TQ:  Which of your prior jobs prepared you best for being a writer?

Delilah:  I have an art degree and had a career in non-profit arts centers, running galleries and art education programs. I was always the one who wrote the press releases and copy for class descriptions and did copyediting on all the marketing materials, so writing was a big part of my life. I also worked in a haunted house, which taught me a lot about timing and making people pee themselves.

TQ:  Are there any other genres or subgenres in which you would like to write in addition to Paranormal Romance?

Delilah:  I have a creepy paranormal YA called SERVANTS OF THE STORM that will be out with Simon Pulse next year. And I'm working on a straight-up noir-ish scifi story with a male protagonist. And I've written some MG, too. I want to write ALL THE THINGS!

TQ:  What's next?

Delilah:  I just finished the first draft of Blud book 3, WICKED AFTER MIDNIGHT, so I've got a lot of editing to do on that one. My next round of SERVANTS OF THE STORM edits is on its way to my house. My third Blud e-novella, THE DAMSEL AND THE DAGGERMAN, has been turned in to my editor but was moved to January 2014. And in June, I might actually get to work on something new.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Delilah:  Thanks so much for having me! I hope y'all enjoy WICKED AS SHE WANTS!

Delilah S. Dawson’s darkly tempting debut drops her unsuspecting heroine into a strange faraway land for a romantic adventure that’s part paranormal, part steampunk . . . and completely irresistible.

She wakes up in a surreal world, where Criminy Stain, the dashing proprietor of a magical traveling circus, curiously awaits. At Criminy’s electric touch, Tish glimpses a tantalizing future, but she also foresees her ultimate doom. Before she can decide whether to risk her fate with the charming daredevil, the locket disappears, and with it, her only chance to return home. Tish and Criminy battle roaring sea monsters and thundering bludmares, vengeful ghosts and crooked Coppers in a treacherous race to recover the necklace from the evil Blud-hating Magistrate. But if they succeed, will Tish forsake her fanged suitor and return to her normal life, or will she take a chance on an unpredictable but dangerous destiny with the Bludman she’s coming to love?

Interview with Delilah S. Dawson - March 28, 2012

Please welcome Delilah S. Dawson to The Qwillery as part of the 2012 Debut Author Challenge Interviews. Wicked as They Come, Delilah's fantastic debut, was published yesterday. You may read my 5 Qwill review and enter the giveaway for a copy of Wicked as They Come here.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Delilah:  Sometimes, I lose track of the story or realize that the characters are stalling out in conversation. When I need to get the action going again, I always use the same method: I turn off the lights, run a hot bath, put on my playlist, and float until the story comes to me. It's almost like forcing myself into a trance or a dream state, and the next step magically appears. For WICKED AS THEY COME, I listened to the album Like Vines by The Hush Sound, and you can hear echoes of the songs and lyrics in the story.

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Delilah:  If you expand 'writers' to include television, Joss Whedon is one of my biggest influences. His stories are original but accessible and feature characters who are never entirely dark or light. You might notice echoes of Buffy's Spike in my Criminy Stain. If we're speaking strictly books, then Stephen King was my earliest influence as a writer. When I was a kid, there wasn't a YA section at the bookstore or library; your next step was Carrie, then Pet Sematary, then IT, and he really pushed the boundaries of what I understood literature to be. My gateway to romance was the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, followed by Sara Donati's Into the Wilderness series. These days, my favorite authors are Gail Carriger, Deanna Raybourn, and Cassandra Clare.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Delilah:  Both. I start with a very loose outline, and I almost always know how the book is going to end, what the climactic scene will be. I fill in the story as I go along and leave myself plenty of room for surprises. One of my favorite occurrences is when a character just pops up out of nowhere and steals the scene.

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Delilah:  Editing. Before I started down the road to publishing, I thought the first draft was the hard part. Wrong! So wrong. You end up reading your draft hundreds of times, finding mistakes up until the very last pass pages. It's difficult, especially the first time around, to accept agent and editorial feedback and kill your darlings. You definitely have to learn which things to fight for and which ones to concede gracefully.

TQ:  Describe Wicked as They Come (Blud 1) in 140 characters or less.

Delilah:  Damaged nurse steals locket, wakes up in odd world, falls for hot magical vampire carnival ringmaster. Should she stay or should she go?

TQ:  What inspired you to write Wicked as They Come?

Delilah:  I found the band The Hush Sound on Pandora and bought their album Like Vines. After listening to it twice and watching several episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I dreamed that I woke up naked on a slab of rock and found a very hot guy in a tailcoat watching me. He became Criminy Stain, and the story just kind of happened. I added most of the things I like, including a circus, a ghost, a submarine, a kraken, corsets, and bloodthirsty horses.

TQ:   What sort of research did you do for Wicked as They Come?

Delilah:  I used Wikipedia a lot, that's for sure! Since research and accuracy aren't my strong point, I made up the world according to logic and my own amusement.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Delilah:  Criminy Stain wrote himself. He sprung full formed from my imagination and stole every scene. Tish was the hardest. She was originally more of a whiner, and I struggled to make her more optimistic while being sensitive to the fact that she had been a victim of abuse. It was a fine line to walk, making her realistic, sympathetic, and yet someone the reader would cheer for.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Wicked as They Come?

Delilah:  All the ones with Criminy being playful and wicked. =) I know romance authors are always in love with their heroes, but... he's just so swoony.

TQ:   What's next?

Delilah:  We're already working on the second book in the Blud series, tentatively titled WICKED AS SHE WANTS and due out in Spring 2013. Not to give too much away, but it involves a fiery heroine, a gorgeous musician, pickpocketing cyborg bears and a trip on the world's only floating brothel. There will also be an e-novella offered in between the two books featuring an unexpected romantic twist on a secondary character in Criminy's Clockwork Caravan. And I'm partnering with Villainess Soaps on a line of artisan perfume oils and handmade soaps based on some of the main characters. Her version of Criminy is the best thing I've ever smelled!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Delilah:  Thanks so much for having me and including WICKED AS THEY COME in the 2012 Debut Author Challenge!

Guest Blog by Delilah S. Dawson - Want a Wicked Vacation? Try a Parallel Universe!

Please welcome Delilah S. Dawson to The Qwillery as part of the 2012 Debut Author Challenge Guest Blogs. Wicked as They Come, Delilah's debut, will be published in late March by Pocket. Check out the cover below. It's all sorts of gorgeous!

Want a Wicked Vacation? Try a Parallel Universe!

Thanks so much for hosting me at The Qwillery and including WICKED AS THEY COME in the 2012 Debut Author Challenge! I’m so excited to spread the word about my first book, and I’d like to officially invite everyone to join me on an adventure in a new world, one without mortgages or head colds or children bickering over the last granola bar. Because I’m betting that, like me, you could use a vacation.

That’s why I made up my own world.

The stories in my Blud series all take place in a parallel universe called Sang. Basically, it’s our Victorian-era world, but with limitless steampunk and clockwork technology. And magic. And sort-of vampires and sort-of demons and lizard people and all sorts of strange things that have tails and swallow snakes and go bump in the night. In Sang, anything can happen.

That’s what’s so compelling to me about the melding of steampunk and paranormal romance. Stories aren’t fettered by silly things like physics and reality. The male lead of WICKED AS THEY COME is a sort of vampire, rakishly handsome and quite skilled at magic and… other things. We all love Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, right? Now what if he was nearly indestructible, long-lived, long-haired, extra naughty, owned a traveling circus, had a helpful pet clockwork monkey, and could conjure butterflies out of dust? Better, right?

All of Sang is like that. Sure, there’s prejudice and poverty and hardship. But in that optimistic, pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps steampunk mythos, the characters are empowered to move beyond the walls of their cramped cities and into the dangerous but fascinating world beyond. Flying machines, clockwork animals, automatons—technology can do the impossible, and magic can do everything else. When almost anything is possible, there’s an abundance of hope.

Plus, in Sang, and in my imagination, there’s someone for everyone. Damaged people can find healing. Lost people can find comfort. No matter how strange someone might be, there’s always a perfect fit out there, just waiting to love them—and possibly to roger them in a submarine.

Sang is being built, piece by piece, as I write each book in the Blud series, kind of like when Bastian had to rebuild Fantasia at the end of The Neverending Story. The first book takes place in Sangland, their version of England. The land is divided into countryside ravaged by bloodthirsty rabbits and huge, walled cities where humans are outnumbered by Bludmen, which are like vampires without the superstition. The second book starts in Sangland and moves (via airship brothel) to Freesia, their version of Russia, which is a romantic land of glittering snow, cyborg bears, and ice-white royal Bludmen. The third book will hopefully take place in the cabarets of Franchia, the Sangish France. I’m hoping it will be like Moulin Rouge, but with a much hotter private interlude in the clockwork elephant.

Will there be more books in the series? I hope so! There are so many more countries and peoples in Sang to explore via dirigible or submarine. The Far East, the frozen Arctic, the Sangish version of America. And I still have to figure out where Eblick the Lizard Boy came from. There are so many people I haven’t discovered yet, just waiting for their chance to shine.

All you need to do to apply for your Sangish passport is read WICKED AS THEY COME. I’m hoping you’ll be as hooked as I am, and we can continue to discover a new world together.
