Interview with Carolyn Crane, author of Mr. Real and the Disillusionists Trilogy - October 27, 2012

Please welcome Carolyn Crane to The Qwillery. Mr. Real (Code of Shadows 1) will be published on October 30, 2012.

Interview with Carolyn Crane, author of Mr. Real and the Disillusionists Trilogy - October 27, 2012

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery:

Carolyn:  Hey, thanks so much for inviting me here! Always lovely to stop by the Qwillery!!

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Carolyn:  I get most of my ideas while running. I’ve learned to bring a pen and paper, because I was getting frustrated not remembering them. I’m sure I look crazy, stopping on a run, pulling out a pen (from where it is hooked on my running bra!) and paper and scribbling.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Carolyn:  As Carolyn Crane, I’m mostly a plotter. I like to know where I’m going, at least the big swipes. The major scenes. I like to write toward known destinations, though I do take small detours. I would never write without a general destination. However, oddly, in my smutty pen name, Annika Martin, I am a total pantser.

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Carolyn:  Finding the time, making the most of that time. Does everybody say that? Time management! A boring but probably all too common answer!

TQ:  Describe Mr. Real in 140 characters or less.
Carolyn:  Evil! Here goes:

A woman uses an occult computer program to bring a sexy spy from a TV ad to life; the actor/fighter who plays the character is not amused.

TQ:  What inspired you to write Mr. Real (Code of Shadows 1) series?

Carolyn:  It was one of those what-if scenarios. People so often claim character boyfriends, and I thought, what if one of them actually showed up? What would happen? And, it evolved from there.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do to create your world and mythology?

Carolyn:  This is set in the real world, so, it wasn’t too hard. Though I did have to research a bit about 1980’s style computers. Mostly that involved asking my most nerdy pals questions.

TQ:  In Mr. Real, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why?

Carolyn:  My heroine, Alix. was the most difficult. She’s just very different from me, so it was hard to get that line right. My easiest was the secret agent, Sir Kendall. I feel like I have the total key to his mind.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Mr. Real?

Carolyn:  There are a couple of villain scenes toward the end…I guess I won’t say anything more…!! There’s also a restaurant scene I really like.

TQ:  What's next?

Carolyn:  The Mr. Real prequel will appear in Fire & Frost in early 2013, in an anthology I’m doing with Meljean Brook and Jill Myles. And, I’m back to more traditional UF stuff with my other new series, Dark Forest.

TQ:   Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery

Carolyn:  Hey, thank you SO much for having me!

Interview with Carolyn Crane, author of Mr. Real and the Disillusionists Trilogy - October 27, 2012
The woman of his dreams…with the secret agent of his nightmares

Alix Gordon is a woman who doesn’t take life too seriously. What’s the fun in that? So when she stumbles across occult software that can bring any computer image to life, she conjures up lots of awesome outfits and accessories. And then, on one drunken, horny night, she conjures up Sir Kendall, the sexy TV ad spy . . . who looks exactly like Paul Reinhardt, the hot martial arts teacher who kicked her out of class a few years ago.

Fighter Paul Reinhardt has good reason to hate Sir Kendall, the character he brought to life to land a part in a TV ad; he’d do anything to forget him. A cross country road trip seems just the thing . . . until Paul finds himself inexplicably drawn to Minnesota and is shocked to discover Sir Kendall – in the flesh – with the girl he’d once loved from afar. He barges into Alix and Sir Kendall’s love nest, determined to stop the madness – somehow.

But is super spy Sir Kendall transforming into something more dangerous anyone can imagine? And what will Sir Kendall do when Paul and Alix finally give into their mad lust for each other?

THERE’S A THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND DOOM.

No wager is too outrageous for Simon Fitzgerald, the most reckless of the Disillusionists. His dark secrets drive him to take increasingly extreme risks, but he’s never lived so quite so dangerously as when he hooks up with Midcity’s most powerful prognosticator.

Fawna Brady is tormented by the destinies she sees for those around her. To Fawna, knowledge of the future is a cage she’d do anything to escape. She’s stunned to discover a taste of the freedom for which she yearns at the side of Simon, the one person in the world who despises everything she is, everything she stands for.

Random details aren’t adding up…and is it her imagination, or are her friends and fiancé keeping secrets from her? And what’s with the strange sense of unease, and her odd new headaches?

Justine tries to stay upbeat as Midcity cowers under martial law, sleepwalking cannibals, and a mysterious rash of paranormal copycat violence, but her search for answers leads her into the most dangerous mind game yet.

SOME SECRETS COME BACK TO HAUNT. OTHERS COME TO KILL.

Justine Jones lived her life as a fearful hypochondriac until she was lured into the web of a mysterious mastermind named Packard, who gifts her with extraordinary mental powers—dooming her to fight Midcity’s shadowy war on paranormal crime in order to find the peace she so desperately craves.

But now serial killers with unheard-of skills are terrorizing the most powerful beings in Midcity, including mastermind Packard and his oldest friend and worst enemy, Midcity’s new mayor, who has the ability to bend matter itself to his will.

As the body count grows, Justine faces a crisis of conscience as she tests the limits of her new powers and faces an impossible choice between two flawed but brilliant men—one on a journey of redemption, the other descending into a pit of moral depravity.

Interview with Carolyn Crane, author of Mr. Real and the Disillusionists Trilogy - October 27, 2012
JUSTINE KNOWS SHE’S GOING TO DIE. ANY SECOND NOW.

Justine Jones has a secret. A hardcore hypochondriac, she’s convinced a blood vessel is about to burst in her brain. Then, out of the blue, a startlingly handsome man named Packard peers into Justine’s soul and invites her to join his private crime-fighting team. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal. With a little of Packard’s hands-on training, Justine can weaponize her neurosis, turning it outward on Midcity’s worst criminals, and finally get the freedom from fear she’s always craved. End of problem.

Or is it? In Midcity, a dashing police chief is fighting a unique breed of outlaw with more than human powers. And while Justine’s first missions, including one against a nymphomaniac husband-killer, are thrilling successes, there is more to Packard than meets the eye. Soon, while battling her attraction to two very different men, Justine is plunging deeper into a world of wizardry, eroticism, and cosmic secrets. With Packard’s help, Justine has freed herself from her madness—only to discover a reality more frightening than anyone’s worst fears.

Boy, it's hard to pick just one big event. It would have to be an event where I'd be safe, so no Salem witch trials or crusades. I was actually up for the first moon walk, but so young it didn't really mean anything to me. Maybe the first actual flight.

Question: What do you expect to see over the course of a series, what pulls you in more, and even those things that make you end up bored and stop reading a series?

BookAttict who says...

I can't believe this series hasn't appeared on my radar until now.. Deadworld sounds like a fantastic series that I'd love to read!

I read. A lot. What do I look for in a series that keeps me reading? I absolutely LOVE UF and Fantasy, so it's the details and world-building that pull me in, as well as well-drawn characters (main AND secondary) that I want to know more about.

While I realize nobody's perfect (even authors) -- and not every book is going to be a perfect read for me -- what really will turn me off a series is lack of development in the characters. I've noticed this seems to happen quite a bit in well-established series (14-15) books in. The author finds a formula that works and the characters stay in this time-warp and never change, just regurgitate the same jokes, situations, etc. -- Time moves forward-- people change. This should be true of characters in a series as well.

The other thing will put me off a series is a forced story arc -- like the author forced the characters to go in a direction that, well, seems manufactured and awkward, to get them from where they are to where the author "needs" them to be (if that makes any sense...)

Thanks for the amazing giveaway!

A lot of Winners! - April 10, 2012

The Alchemist of Souls (Night's Masque 1) by Anne Lyle - Ended April 9, 2012 - Read the interview here.

Authors After Dark Author Spotlight Interview - Carolyn Crane

Carolyn:  Hi Qwill! Thanks so much for inviting me here. Hey, are you looking forward to AAD as much as I am? It’s really coming up soon. Sort of.

Qwill:  Yes I am. I can't wait to see everyone and visit one of my favorite cities!  And now a few questions:

TQ:  What inspired you to become a writer?

Carolyn:  I was inspired to become a writer by reading, by being moved, emotionally, by books. And the excitement and delight and escape of reading. I just knew it was what I wanted to be involved in.

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Carolyn:  I read that question and a million things flit across my mind. I would say it’s how long everything takes. Every novel takes so long to write. When I’m finished with one, it can take forever to get into a reader’s hand, especially if I’m traditionally publishing it, but even my self pub stuff feels that way. Or, I’m waiting for my agent on this, or an editor on that. Or even myself! I recently redid my website, and what should’ve been an afternoon project took forever. I get really antsy about everything!

TQ:  What writing achievement are you most proud of?

Carolyn:  Oh, you are naughty! You are leading my bashful Midwestern self to be boasterly! But honestly, I’m proud of my Disillusionists trilogy - writing it, publishing it, having it in the world. It did not blow anyone away in terms of sales numbers (quite the reverse!!) however, I wouldn’t write one word different. I feel so proud of it, just artistically.

TQ:  What one thing should everyone know about your writing?

Carolyn:  I had great fun doing it…most days!

TQ:  Please tell us about your latest and upcoming works.

Carolyn:  I just put out a spin-off novella (which stands alone) called Devil’s Luck. It’s about my most reckless character. I also have two upcoming series: a paranormal spy romance, tentatively entitled MISTER REAL that takes place in rural Minnesota; it is a massively quirky project that I am in love with. It’s also a LOT hotter than the Disillusionists… a bit wild, in fact. lol.

My UF adventure series, DARK FOREST, is more of a traditional UF. It’s on the humorous and sexier side, and takes place in northern Wisconsin. Kind of a rural gothic book where even the deer heads on the walls of the rustic supper club look vaguely vampiric. Contains one of my favorite heroes I ever wrote.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Carolyn:  Qwill, thank you so much for having me! See you in NOLA!

About Carolyn

Authors After Dark Author Spotlight Interview - Carolyn Crane
Carolyn Crane lives in Minneapolis with her husband and two daring cats. She works as a marketing writer for her straight job and has also put in time as a shop clerk, a cocktail waitress and a plastics factory worker, which she was dismal at (think I Love Lucy). Also, she can relate almost any life experience to one or another Star Trek episodes, and if you invite her to your party, your entire cheese plate will be in grave danger. She can be found reading in bed, running, helping animals, or eating Mexican food.

7 Supernatural Sidekicks especially for readers and bloggers

Hello friends and Qwillery readers! So nice to be here, and thanks to you, Qwill, for having me over to help celebrate the ebook release week of Head Rush, the third and final book in the Disillusionists Trilogy. (Audio book is already out, and print releases later in 2012…yee-hah!!)

Writing this trilogy has been so fun, and I am so grateful to the readers and bloggers helped make it such an awesome experience, and for everybody being excited along with me for this release.

The other day I was guest blogging about supernatural sidekicks that authors could use. But, readers and bloggers could use their own supernatural sidekicks, too. And I started thinking….

Supernatural spoiler-howling dog

Guest Blog by Carolyn Crane - 7 Supernatural Sidekicks especially for readers and bloggers

Don’t you hate when you’re reading a fave blog or some tweet and you get a massive spoiler? I think this spoiler-howling dog would be such an excellent supernatural sidekick for all of us readers.

Magical schedule-shredding fox

Guest Blog by Carolyn Crane - 7 Supernatural Sidekicks especially for readers and bloggers

We’ve all been there: staying up way too late to finish an exciting book. Well, this magical woodland friend is the perfect sidekick—he totally shreds up your schedule, clearing the decks and all responsibilities, so that you can get your full eight hours. Sleep tight!

Goodreads anti-spam mage

Guest Blog by Carolyn Crane - 7 Supernatural Sidekicks especially for readers and bloggers

This fierce and frightening mage is a handy sidekick for anybody who uses Goodreads—he completely vaporizes author spam with beams from his eyes!

Magical review monkey

Guest Blog by Carolyn Crane - 7 Supernatural Sidekicks especially for readers and bloggers

This little guy types away at a blogger’s computer while she (or he!) sleeps, and in the morning, the review is done. This very handy monkey would also be a nice sidekick for those very kind readers who want to put up a review on an online site.

Hoppy follower-mojo rabbit

Guest Blog by Carolyn Crane - 7 Supernatural Sidekicks especially for readers and bloggers

Okay, this one is just for bloggers. I know that a lot of times blogs can be judged by followers—not always the fairest or most accurate measuring stick! Well, who cares, because if you had this rabbit as your sidekick, you would kick ass in the follower category. The rabbit would just pull them in!

Late post author-pecking bird

Guest Blog by Carolyn Crane - 7 Supernatural Sidekicks especially for readers and bloggers

For bloggers also: Don’t you hate it when you offer a guest post slot to an author, and they get it in like, the day before it is due to run (or less!), leaving you to do a complicated layout, sometimes involving images and cartoons, in less than 24 hours? What do these authors think? This bird straightens them RIGHT out.

About Carolyn

Guest Blog by Carolyn Crane - 7 Supernatural Sidekicks especially for readers and bloggers
