The Bird Eater
47North, April 1, 2014
Trade Paperback and Kindle eBook, 278 pages

Twenty years ago, the mysterious death of his aunt left Aaron Holbrook orphaned and alone. He abandoned his rural Arkansas hometown vowing never to return, until his seven-year-old son died in an accident, plunging Aaron into a nightmare of addiction and grief. Desperate to reclaim a piece of himself, he returns to the hills of his childhood, to Holbrook House, where he hopes to find peace among the memories of his youth. But solace doesn’t come easy. Someone—or something—has other plans.

Like Aaron, Holbrook House is but a shell of what it once was, a target for vandals and ghost hunters who have nicknamed it “the devil’s den.” Aaron doesn’t believe in the paranormal—at least, not until a strange boy begins following him wherever he goes. Plagued by violent dreams and disturbing visions, Aaron begins to wonder if he’s losing his mind. But a festering darkness lurks at the heart of Holbrook House…a darkness that grins from within the shadows, delighting in Aaron’s sorrow, biding its time.

Bad boy knife-thrower Marco Taresque is the hottest and most dangerous performer in the caravan. He keeps to himself until a pesky female journalist arrives, anxious to interview him about his checkered past—his last assistant disappeared under mysterious and bloody circumstances, earning him the nickname “The Deadly Daggerman.”

Unsinkable journalist and adventurer Jacinda Harville doesn’t take no for an answer, and she’s determined to wear down Marco no matter how threatening—or incredibly desirable—he might appear. He agrees to an interview—but only if she’ll let him strap her to a spinning table and throw knives at her body. How can she say no? And how can she resist him when he leans close for a kiss that strikes her more sharply than any blade? It’s the first time she’s let a man get the better of her, and she’s determined it will be the last…

Just when she thinks she can’t take any more of his games, Jacinda receives a note from Marco saying he’s finally ready to tell her the truth about what happened to his missing assistant. She sets out for an address miles away, but what she finds there turns the tables on everything she thought she knew about the tender lover who wears a smile as sharp as his knives.

As secrets are unraveled and passions take hold, Ginger realizes her hard heart has melted. But will it be too late to save Marco—and herself—from the daggerman’s dangerous past?

What's Up for 2012 Debut Authors in 2012 and 2013 - Part 1
Andrew Morrison sacrificed everything—his childhood, his education, and the girl of his dreams—to look after his alcoholic mother. But enough is enough, and now he’s determined to get out and live his life. That means trading the home he grew up in for a rented room in the house of an old childhood friend— both of which are in sorry shape.

The only thing worse than Drew’s squalid new digs and sullen new roommate is the envy he feels for the house next door: a picture-perfect suburban domicile straight out of Norman Rockwell, with a couple of happy householders to match. But the better acquainted he gets with his new neighbors—especially the sweet and sexy Harlow Ward—the more he suspects unspeakable darkness beyond the white picket fence.

At the intersection of Blue Velvet and Basic Instinct lies The Neighbors, an insidiously entertaining tale of psychological suspense and mounting terror by the boldest new master of the form, Ania Ahlborn.

Necromancer is such an ugly word, but it’s a title Eric Carter is stuck with.

He sees ghosts, talks to the dead. He’s turned it into a lucrative career putting troublesome spirits to rest, sometimes taking on even more dangerous things. For a fee, of course.

When he left L.A. fifteen years ago he thought he’d never go back. Too many bad memories. Too many people trying to kill him.

But now his sister’s been brutally murdered and Carter wants to find out why.

Was it the gangster looking to settle a score? The ghost of a mage he killed the night he left town? Maybe it’s the patron saint of violent death herself, Santa Muerte, who’s taken an unusually keen interest in him.

Carter’s going to find out who did it and he’s going to make them pay.

As long as they don’t kill him first.

Now she’s haunted by the man’s dying words—Save Anna—and before she knows it, she’s on a mission to rescue some poor girl from the undead. Which involves crashing a vampire den, falling for a zombie, and fighting for her soul. Grey’s Anatomy was never like this…

Cover Revealed - Shapeshifted by Cassie Alexander
After surviving a brutal vampire attack, Nurse Edie Spence is ready to get back to work—attending to supernatural creatures in need of medical help. But her nursing skills are put to the test when she witnesses a hit-and-run on her lunch break. The injured pedestrian is not only a werewolf, he’s the pack leader. And now Edie’s stuck in the middle of an all-out were-war…

With two rival packs fighting tooth and nail, Edie has no intention of crossing enemy lines. But when she meets her patient’s nephew—a tattooed werewolf named Lucas with a predatory gleam in his eye that’s hard to resist—Edie can’t help but choose sides. The question is: can she trust this dangerous new ally? And can she trust her own instincts when she’s near him? Either way, Edie can’t seem to pull away—even if getting involved makes her easy prey…

Interview with Cassie Alexander - May 22, 2012

Please welcome Cassie Alexander to The Qwillery as part of the 2012 Debut Author Challenge Interviews. Nightshifted (Edie Spence/Nightshifted 1) is published today. Happy Publication Day to Cassie!

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Cassie:  I plan out a tattoo to get for each writing project. Even short stories, sometimes. There’s a point in every project where I get swept away with the idea and I think “Yes, I will want something symbolizing this moment on my skin for life.” I haven’t actually gotten any of these tattoos yet – for good or for bad, I suffer from next-project-itis – but it’s a just a thing I do. When I get to the tattoo planning stage, I know the writing’s real.

(I do have other tattoos. Which is part of the reason I always wind up holding off – I’m running out of skin ;))

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Cassie:  I’m lucky to know a lot of my favorite writers – Kat Richardson and Diana Rowland write fantastic urban fantasies, they’re both who I want to be when I grow up. Kelley Eskridge and Nancy Kress were writing instructors of mine recently, and they were amazing too. And Rachel Swirsky and Katie Sparrow are close friends of mine – I bounce most of my ideas off of them early on, and I’m lucky that they’re awesome and wise.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Cassie:  40/60…or the other way around. I’d love to be more of a plotter, and I keep trying to do outlines, but there’s always a point where the story just bucks off my plans and forges ahead. Which is great, until it runs into another dead end, and I’m cursing the sky wishing I’d stuck with my outline. I bounce back and forth quite a lot ;).

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Cassie:  Beginning is the hardest part – and then close on its heels, is realizing that everything I’m writing is most likely wrong. Once I accept that though, it’s freeing, and it becomes so much easier to create first draft, knowing I can edit it all later.

TQ:  Describe Nightshifted (Edie Spence/Nightshifted 1) in 140 characters or less.

CassieNightshifted is the story of Edie Spence, a nurse who works on a ward for supernatural creatures and vampire exposed humans.

TQ:  What inspired you to write Nightshifted?

Cassie:  It was processing a lot of difficult things at work. Being a new nurse is frightening. You’re in charge of a lot, but you don’t know everything – you don’t even know what you don’t know, worst of all.

I was reading urban fantasy at the time, and there weren’t any protagonists out there for me – everyone was amazingly talented and kick ass and special. There were no people just trying to get by, doing the best they could, scared as hell it wouldn’t be good enough on a bad night.

That’s when I started to work on Nightshifted in earnest. To write the kind of heroine I needed to see.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for Nightshifted?

Cassie:  Since I’m a nurse in real life, I didn’t have to go far out of my way – I just tried to put myself out there for new experiences, and listened actively to other people’s stories. I’m still a new nurse though, I know not everything in the book is medically accurate – sometimes on purpose, and sometimes on accident.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Cassie:  Edie’s the hardest, since she’s the protagonist, and it’s first person. I’ve gone off track for scenes, chapters, of material before, and then realized, wait-a-second, she would never do that, and have had to do immense backtrackings and rewritings before. She’s my only chance to get it right – and because she’s front and center, if I screw up, she’s where I get it wrong.

Dren’s the easiest, because he’s got the most black and white view.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Nightshifted?

Cassie:  The…dragon part. I won’t say anything more, though ;).

TQ:  What's next?

CassieMoonshifted comes out in November, and Shapeshifted comes out next June.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Cassie:  Thanks Sally! :D

Interview with Cassie Alexander - May 22, 2012
From debut author Cassie Alexander comes a spectacular new urban fantasy series where working the nightshift can be a real nightmare.

Nursing school prepared Edie Spence for a lot of things. Burn victims? No problem. Severed limbs? Piece of cake. Vampires? No way in hell. But as the newest nurse on Y4, the secret ward hidden in the bowels of County Hospital, Edie has her hands full with every paranormal patient you can imagine—from vamps and were-things to zombies and beyond…

Edie’s just trying to learn the ropes so she can get through her latest shift unscathed. But when a vampire servant turns to dust under her watch, all hell breaks loose.
