Virna DePaul - Chosen by Sin Virtual Book Tour - Stop #1

Please welcome Virna DePaul to The Qwillery as part of the Chosen by Sin Virtual Book Tour!

Welcome to stop #1 in my blog tour For Chosen By Sin (Para-Ops #3).

This tour focuses on my writing and my paranormal series, but also my Twelve Resolutions for 2012, as well as the resolutions of my hero in Chosen By Sin, werebeast Dex Hunt. Those of you who know Dex know he's a bit...difficult, so I'm curious to see what he comes up with. (Psst: Dex doesn't actually know it, but his “resolutions” are more like a Twelve-Step Program designed by me to get him to his HEA).

I'll be giving away a prize to one commenter from this blog stop, but I'm also giving away one grand prize to one blog tour follower. See the giveaway details below! :)

The Para-Ops Series: Five years after the Second Civil War ends, humans and Otherborn—humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA—still struggle for peace. To ensure the continued rights of both, the FBI forms a Para-Ops team with a unique set of skills. (Chosen By Blood (Book 1), Chosen By Fate (Book 2))

So what's Resolution #1 for me? Get Healthy

Okay, okay. I know this isn't really original, but it still tops my list. I suffer from the dreaded yo-yo weight gain/weight loss, and have almost slipped into, “Isn't it worth being a little overweight to eat what I love?” mode. The problem is, I like to eat, but I like cute clothes and feeling good about myself, too. So instead of making my resolution to lose weight, I'm resolved to get healthy. To start moving more than my admittedly super-fast typing fingers. To eat tasty but healthy food. To stop cringing whenever I look at old photos and likewise, to stop saying, “Wow, I used to look really good.”

And what's Resolution #1 for Dex Hunt?

Here's a hint from Chosen By Sin. In this discussion, Lucy is encouraging Dex to pursue Jesmina, a female vampire, despite his promise to “help” Lucy with her feline sexual heat.

“It doesn’t matter what you promised, Dex. If there’s something between you and Jes… If she’s someone you can care about, even love…”

Yes, he’d definitely given her the wrong idea about him.

He covered the hand she still had on his shoulder with one of his, then gently lowered it to her side. “You don’t get it, Lucy,” he said, his voice serious. “I like you enough to help you. To sleep with you. It’s certainly no hardship for me. But I don’t do love. I don’t love anyone. I never have and I never will. As long as you understand that—as long as you don’t interfere with me and Jes again—we’ll be okay.”

Sooooooooo...since Dex is already hot and physically healthy (pffft), his resolution is to stop fighting the notion that his Para-Ops team members, including Lucy Talbot, the team's half-feline mage, are “friends” or that he could ever love anyone. Friends and love are scary words for Dex. When you have a friend, you risk not only being let down, but letting someone down. But without friendship, we can't truly love, and that's plain sad.

Virna DePaul - Chosen by Sin Virtual Book Tour - Stop #1
The longest life isn’t always the happiest one…

For now, werebeast Dex Hunt serves on the Para-Ops team, but his true purpose is to kill the werewolf leader he blames for his mother’s death. Biding his time, Dex keeps his emotional distance from his team members and anyone else he might care for, including a mysterious vampire he met in L.A.

As a doctor, vampire Jesmina Martin has dedicated her immortal life to healing others. As a scientific researcher, she’s trying to prolong life spans, in particular those of her adoptive dragon-shifter family and the werewolf who saved her as a child. Her greatest hope lies with Dex, a werebeast she believes can gift immortality to others.

Only Dex knows nothing about his gift or the fact Jesmina wants to harness it. After a passionate night together neither expects to see the other again. Weeks later, they are reunited in France and forced to acknowledge a fragile miracle—a new life struggling to survive. At the same time, they must stop a group of rebel shape-shifters hoping to unleash every demon in hell. But before Dex and Jesmina can save their child or the world, they must relinquish their secrets, face their fears, and open themselves to love.

Infidel (Bel Dame Apochrypha Volume 2) by Kameron Hurley

Winners x 6 - October 16, 2011

The Question:  What woman or women inspire you?

bmb80 who said...

I’ve been anxiously awaiting Infidel (which has been forever) since I wrapped up God’s War.

Love the question.

It takes a special woman to inspire others and what’s more special then a mother? She was the person who made me embrace odd things about myself that others (even grown ups) said was not normal—she called them my gifts.

She taught me to be inspired by the people who offer you something of value without asking for anything in return, such as the florist who felt that I, a total stranger, was in need of a simple hug and a rose because she thought I looked sad when I walked by her stand. She was right.

The nurse that prayed over my mother years ago when she was sick in the hospital and told me everything will be all right.

My sixth grade teacher who gave me hard time who I believed hated my guts but pushed me because she cared, and although I didn’t know it at the time, she’s one of the reasons I’m a writer today and changed my life forever.

This is living proof that those we consider ordinary are absolutely extraordinary.

Blood Rights (House of Comarré 1) by Kristen Painter

Winners x 6 - October 16, 2011

The Question:  Who is your favorite Urban Fantasy heroine or hero?

SeaLionMama who said...

My favorite heroine of all time is Cat (AKA Catherine, Kitten) from Jeanine Frost Night Huntress series. She is about as real as a half vampire can get. Not only is she relatable in regards to her insecurities, she kicks A$$! In every book Cat gets better and better as a person, but still has the inate ability to care about someone else other than herself. She would sacrifice herself and her feelings to make sure the people she loves (or actually anyone that is the underdog or needs help) are not harmed. Her love for humanity is what makes her the most deadly heroine in my eyes. She doesn’t forget what brought her to that point in her life and she takes what she has learned and grows from it… That makes a hero a hero…

The Question:  Science Fiction or Science Fantasy?

Sinnaye who said...

Science Fantasy for sure. I'm not too keen on the whole science fiction-idea, but the fantasy equivalent of it rather sparks my imterest.

Interview with Virna DePaul & Giveaway - October 6, 2011

Please welcome Virna DePaul to The Qwillery. Earlier this year I interviewed Virna as part of the 2011 Debut Author Challenge interviews. I'm thrilled to have her visit again. Chosen by Fate (Para-Ops 2) was published on October 4, 2011.

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery!

Virna:  I’m so happy to be back. Thank you for having me again!

TQ:  Please tell us about Chosen By Fate, the second novel in your Para-Ops series.

VirnaChosen By Fate is about the Para-Ops team’s “ghost” and human psychic shaman. Readers met Wraith and Caleb O’Flare in Chosen By Blood and there was an immediate attraction between them. This couple has to overcome many things to be together, however, including the fact Wraith is the walking dead (she has blue skin, white hair, hazy eyes, and feels pain whenever she’s touched) and Caleb is bound and determined not to hurt her. They are forced to deal with their feelings in Los Angeles, where the team is investigating a rash of crimes in the feline community.

TQ:  Which character has surprised you the most in the Para-Ops series?

Virna:  I’m in the middle of writing Dex Hunt’s book, Chosen By Sin. As the tough loner werebeast of the team, he’s definitely got attitude and wounds, but he’s done a few things in Chosen By Fate and his own book that have been a little shocking to me. They tell me that he’s extremely complex and ultimately very honorable.

TQ:  If you worked for the FBI's Para-Ops team, what would you be doing?

Virna:  I think I’d be a strategist. I’m not particularly athletic or physically tough, but I love being able to “make things work.” If there was a mission to be done, I’d be a voice to challenge the plan to make sure all possibilities have been contemplated and the best one chosen.

TQ:  Barring paranormality, which character in the series is most like you?

Virna:  I’m most like Lucy Talbot, the team’s feline mage. She’s the most quiet, even-tempered member of the team and she’s also a natural peacemaker. However, she has hidden layers and a toughness that most people don’t see at first glance. She’s trying to reconcile her past with who she is and who she wants to be, and that’s something I struggle with, too.

TQ:  You're a former prosecutor. Are there any similarities between prosecuting a case and writing a novel?

Virna:  What a cool question! I think there are similarities: 1) preparation and research is a key part of the work; 2) you have to keep your focus on the end goal while still navigating the obstacles constantly being thrown at you; and 3) you need to see past the negative and disheartening parts and ultimately believe that what you’re doing is meaningful.

TQ:  What do you wish you'd known when the 1st book came out that you know now?

Virna:  I’m really not sure. My first thought was: that there will be readers who really love the series. But some part of me already knew that. Otherwise, I don’t think I would have pursued publication so aggressively. I also knew there would be readers who didn’t love the book. That knowledge didn’t stop me from being disappointed with negative feedback, but at least I wasn’t blindsided. Knowledge-wise, I think I was pretty prepared for the entire process, but surprises, both good and are bad, are an inherent part of the journey.

TQ:  Are there any other genres in which you would like to write in addition to paranormal and contemporary romantic suspense?

Virna:  I’ve written a couple of contemporary romances, which has been fun. I think it would be really challenging to write a historical, and I do like a challenge!

TQ:  What's next?

VirnaChosen By Sin, Dex Hunt’s book. I’m also going to be launching my debut romantic suspense series with HQN with the first book, Shades Of Desire, in the spring of 2012.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Virna:  Thank you again for having me! I appreciate the chance to tell your readers about me and my stories.

Interview with Virna DePaul and Giveaway - May 11, 2011

Please welcome Virna DePaul to The Qwillery as part of the 2011 Debut Author Challenge Interviews.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Virna:  I can write really fast. I wrote the partial for Chosen By Blood (my debut paranormal romantic suspense) in a weekend. Then, when an editor told me she needed the full in order to buy it, I got the full manuscript to her within a month (and that included having my awesome agent review it). Of course, I revised and polished it after it sold, but I was proud of the initial version, too. I'm thankful I don't have to write that fast regularly, and I've certainly experienced "writer's block," but I think one of the reasons I ultimately sold is because of my speed.

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Virna:  Larissa Ione, JR Ward, Rhyannon Byrd, Lori Foster, Anne Stuart, Linda Howard are just a few. Lori Foster and Linda Howard have probably been the biggest influences on my writing. I love how they can balance an external plot with a romance. They both create sexy heroes and strong, relatable heroines.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a panster?

Virna:  I'm a pantser with plotter tendencies. I wrote my first three manuscripts without plotting them. However, once I began submitting on partials, I learned to write a synopsis, an outline of the novel from beginning to end. I generally stick to the synopsis, but have no problem changing things as I write if I need to.

TQ:  Describe Chosen By Blood in 140 characters or less.

Virna:  Five years after the Second Civil War ends, humans and Otherborn— humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA—still struggle for peace. To ensure the continued rights of both, the FBI forms a Para-Ops team with a unique set of skills.

Leader of an Otherborn clan, half-breed vampire Knox Devereaux would do anything to find a cure for the anti-vamp vaccine slowly starving his people into extinction. When the FBI contacts him about leading a team of hand-selected Others on a mission to reclaim the stolen antidote, Knox accepts. His new assignment places him in direct contact with Special Agent Felicia Locke, the beautiful human he’s craved since their very first meeting.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the Para-Ops series?

Virna:  I started writing contemporary romantic suspense. When I was challenged by my agent to write a "big book" series to increase my chances of selling, I realized I love paranormals and editors couldn't get enough of them, so why not try writing one that combines elements of the special ops teams I love, and a whole new kind of supernatural world. One where supernatural creatures and humans must band together despite years of mistrust and war in order to finally attain peace. When I came up with the idea for the Para-Ops team, I thought of it as "special ops with fangs" or a cross between X-men and Romancing The Stone.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for the Para-Ops novels?

Virna:  I did a lot of research on the Internet, including research on North Korea, how to parachute from a plane in a high tech bat glider suit, and what kinds of special ops teams the FBI has developed. In addition, I reread many of the the paranormal books I'd already read to figure out how I could make my series different.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in the book?

Virna:  I love the scene I refer to above in which the team parachutes out of a plane into North Korea. I also wrote a "Fight Club-esque"/Mixed Martial Arts/Wrestling scene in which the team participates in a fighting match.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why?

Virna:  I definitely formed an idea of Knox Devereaux, the hero of Chosen By Blood, right away. I knew I wanted him to be alpha, but also elegant, honest, and honorable to a fault. His conflict and internal flaw--the inability to balance duty with desire--formed early on, as well, and helped give my story forward momentum. Hardest and why? I'd say the hardest character to write was Wraith. She's the team's ghost, and she's a blend of prickly bitchiness and vulnerability. I wanted to do her character justice by showing the pain of her background (she wakes up in an alley one day with no memory or vital signs), but also give her enough humanity so that readers can root for her as the heroine of Book 2.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the series?

Virna:  I'm contracted for two books and an option book. I'm currently writing the proposal for Dex Hunt, the team's werebeast, Book 3. Fingers crossed the first two books do well and Berkley picks up the third. I'd love to see Book 3s cover as I absolutely love the first two.

TQ:  What's next?

Virna:  Thankfully, I'm lucky to write for two wonderful houses. I write the paranormal books for Berkley, but I also get to write contemporary romantic suspense for Harlequin. My debut Harlequin Romantic Suspense, Dangerous To Her, launches in September 2011. It's about an undercover cop who investigates a judge and ends up reuniting with his college love. Then in April 2012, my new series with HQN launches. I've also already self-published several novels, under Virna DePaul and Ava Meyers, and I plan on continuing to do that.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery

Virna:  Thank you so much, Sally. It's been a pleasure being with you today!
