Yay! Another Lois McMaster Bujold fan. :) I would love to see her books made into movies, especially the Vorkosigan saga and the Curse of Chalion. Recently i read Sherrilyn Kenyon's League novels and they were great, especially the newest one. For a great chick flick, I would like them to make a movie of the Reluctant Heiress by Eva Ibbotson. :)

Shadow Bound by Erin Kellison (Shadow 1), Bonded by Blood by Laurie London (Sweetblood 1), and Ascension (Guardians of Ascension 1) by Caris Roane

I think I would say in general, newbie vampires have a tough struggle. So do shifters to control that primal/predator side of their wild natures. But if I am picking a single character.... From a book I would say Ellysetta Baristani from C L Wilson's Tairen series. I admired how she fought against her dark side even as the darkness tried to presuade her by attacking her friends and even her family.

Forgotten Sea and Immortal Sea by Virginia Kantra and Burning Up (anthology) with novella "Shifting Sea" by Virgina Kantra

Interview with Erin Kellison and Giveaway - June 3, 2011

Please welcome Erin Kellison to The Qwillery.

First of all, thank you to Sally for hosting me here today at the Qwillery! Sally, you are awesome!

I’m giving away a full set of the Shadow series to one lucky commenter: Shadow Bound, Shadow Fall, and an ARC of Shadowman! Just answer the question below to enter.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Erin:  I have to be wearing only one sock and on my right foot. No, I’m kidding. I sit in my big green chair and I’ve got my snacks and drink, and then I work. No interesting quirks, I’m afraid. Oh! I am terrified of my webcam (it’s like the computer has an eye), so there’s a band-aid over it. I’ve blinded the beast.

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Erin:  I love Lois McMaster Bujold. Love her. And Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, and I’m totally sunk in George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones series. Love Patrick Rothfuss’ series as well. Read it. Charlaine Harris, of course. Karen Marie Moning is awesome. Sharon Shinn. Dean Koontz. Mercedes Lackey. Robin McKinley. There are so many that I could go on and on. I love to read.

Who has influenced my writing? All of them. My books have been good friends to me over the years. But I turn to Stephen King’s On Writing all the time for perspective. I highly recommend it.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a panster?

Erin:  I am a combo, actually. I have a broad idea of where I am going, but the specifics are a mystery. If I plan too much, the spark just isn’t there. If I have no idea what comes next, I lose the story.

TQ:  Describe Shadow Touch in 140 characters or less.

Erin:  Ellie’s shadow has its own mind—it can kiss, touch…kill. Cam studies them, but the more he learns, the more he’s seduced. It’s all trouble.

TQ:  In your Shadow series, who was the easiest character to write and why? The most difficult and why?

Erin:  Tough question. The easiest was probably Adam Thorne, the hero of book one, Shadow Bound. I can’t say why, exactly. He’s a man with a purpose and a drive, and they are so strong within him that I didn’t have to tease them out on the page. The layers just seemed to come. The hardest was Ellie of Shadow Touch. She’s a character in two parts—human and disembodied shadow—so I had to be mindful of the goals and motivations of each, as well as how they differ and why. Ellie might have been the toughest, but I enjoyed writing her so much that I intend to do follow-up novellas that explore what comes next for her and her sweetheart, Cam.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what it your favorite scene or scenes in Shadow Touch?

Erin:  Easy. When the aide comes. I had not expected to love that character so much. I’ll be writing more of him, too.

TQ:  Who should play Ellie Russo if Shadow Touch becomes a movie? Cameron Kalamos?

Erin:  These are always tough questions. I could see Mila Kunis playing Ellie—a mix of girl-next-door and sultry, just like Ellie and her shadow. Ian Somerhalder for Cam. The man has gorgeous eyes. Dreamy eyes. And so does Cam.

TQ:  What's the playlist for Shadow Touch?

Erin:  I am rotten at playlist questions because I write in silence. I’ve got a playground across the street and the squeaky teeter-totter drives me crazy. Something in a minor key with a good beat?

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Shadow series?

Erin:  Shadowman, book three, comes out this September. I’m currently writing book four (and having a lot of fun). And I am contracted for a fifth. I’ll also be expanding Ellie’s story into more novellas, each a stand-alone like the first. I can see the potential for more books, but that is up to fate right now.

TQ:  What's next?

Erin:  A couple of very cool things! First, I’m in the midst of the Shadow/Sweetblood blog tour (#DarkTour) and among other stops, will be back at The Qwillery next week with a fantastic giveaway. Find out more at www.erinkellison.com/appearances.

Also, I’ve just launched the Segue website (www.thesegueinstitute.com) which has all sorts of fun content including founder Adam Thorne’s blog (a running story I’m calling The Prophet), which will develop over the summer, a map of wraith activity, bios of characters, and much more. There are fun easter eggs hidden throughout, including ARCs of Shadowman (releases Sept 6). More prizes will be added as the site expands over the summer. Check it out.

Which brings me to… Shadowman! I am so very excited about the release of the third book in my Shadow series. Find out more here (http://www.erinkellison.com/books/shadowman.html) and preorder here at Amazon.com.

Okay, so here is the contest question: I love the HBO series A Game of Thrones. I’ve just finished the first book and I’m hooked. What book series would you like to see as a television series (or movie)?

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery!

Science
Cam has devoted his career to exploring the boundaries between this world and the Hereafter. But nothing could prepare him for the mischief and mayhem of a soul split in two.

Guest Blog & Giveaway: Erin Kellison, Author of the Shadow Series

The Qwillery is delighted to welcome Erin Kellison.

Leave it at the door, or The Otherworld

A very strange thing happens when a dancer walks into a dance studio. I imagine it’s the same when a runner puts on his running shoes or any other athlete steps from reality into ‘the zone.’ Dance studios are like that, and when I was a serious student, I’d been counseled by teachers, choreographers, and other dancers to leave whatever was going on in my life at the door. Nothing but dance existed in the studio. The place was very literally a different world, breached by that step from the hallway to the wood or Marley floor. That sense of transport always interested me, and with my fledgling writer’s sensibility, made me wonder.

The studio is an Otherworld, and within its space stories are created and enacted. You might think that a ballet comes to life on the stage, but for me it was always most compelling in the studio, sans costumes and make-up, when I could be so close I felt like I was inside a story. In the dance studio feet blister in pointe shoes, clothes become plastered with musky sweat, the very air is humid with the heat of creation. It’s a different experience altogether. And when the finished product finally hits the stage, I see a completely new world. If the magic is right, the spell mixed with careful precision, the audience is transported too.

All this has been simmering in my head from my dancing days, so when it came time to write a story that included the transition between reality and the fae Otherworld, I knew ballet would be my vehicle of choice. My heroine, Annabella, had to be a dancer, the ballet, Giselle—a ghosty story about two worlds.

There had to be one more element to make this all work: Annabella had to have talent. And what is talent but a pure magic? I know I had next to none when I was dancing, but I saw it in others. I could tell when the discrete movements of the ballet turned into story. Annabella had to have wild talent, the kind that creates legends. The kind that can capture and transport the audience along with the dancer.

Here comes my writer’s What If?: What if there really was an Otherworld that could be breached by talent? What if the ‘the zone’ took you halfway, and talent the rest? What if that place was filled with inspiration, dreams (and nightmares)? Could you cross? Would you? And what could leap into this world?

Here is an excerpt:

Guest Blog & Giveaway: Erin Kellison, Author of the Shadow Series
Giselle’s broken heart pulled her gaze to the dirt floor of the forest as she rose above from the freshly turned earth of her grave. She kept her hands folded on her breast, to hold the fragments of her love within her. Prince Albrecht would marry another, a royal lady, and not some peasant girl who knew nothing of the world. His betrayal killed her, yet she couldn’t help but love him still.

But she wasn’t a peasant girl any longer.

She was a wili, a ghost, and would dance forever.

Joining the host of other wilis caught in the midnight hush of the wood, Giselle tiptoed down the long diagonal sweep of dancers to bow to her wili queen, Myrtha.

Everything was as it should be, quiet and peaceful. Annabella’s body felt strong, ready for this moment, though a chill of anxiety had her nerves snapping. The sensation went beyond opening night jitters, beyond nerves, to fear.

On one side of her was the woodland backdrop; on the other, the black yawn of theater where the audience sat, voyeurs to Giselle’s tragic love story. Annabella looked up and strained her eyes beyond the side curtains of the stage: A bright angel stood beyond the false trees, his pale green gaze fixed on her. He was her hope, her protection. With him watching, her dance would be lighter, her heart would be lighter.

If Custo was near, she would be safe.

Giselle rose from her deep curtsy and began the series of arabesque turns that marked her advent into the Other. Heart hammering in her chest, she stirred the air, spun her magic, and reached for a world beyond her own.

Interview with Erin Kellison and Giveaway

Interview with Erin Kellison and Giveaway
The Qwillery is delighted to have Erin Kellison as our guest today. Erin's debut novel, Shadow Bound, was published on June 29. 2010.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Erin:  Writing quirk… hmmm… Malt vinegar chips fuel my creativity. Peanut M&Ms also work.

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? and who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Erin:  I have a distinct gothic bent, so thematically, Jane Eyre really influenced me. I read it in 6th grade and have re-read it a bunch of times since then. A few of my more modern favorites have been Patricia Briggs, Lois McMaster Bujold, Juliet Marillier, Jacqueline Carey, Robin McKinley, Karen Marie Moning, Kresley Cole, J.R. Ward, Nalini Singh, Jayne Ann Krentz. There are so many, I could go on and on.

TQ:  What inspired you to write your first novel?

Erin:  Shadow Bound is my second complete manuscript. My first manuscript was written with my sister. She called me up one day and said “on a whim” let’s write a book. It took us five years. I learned a tremendous amount and had a great time with my sister.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the series?

Erin:  Four right now. :) Book three will be called Shadowman and focuses on Shadowman and Kathleen from Shadow Bound.

TQ:  Who would pick to play Adam Thorne and Talia O'Brien in a movie or TV series?

Erin:  Fun question. I have always pictured Christian Bale as Adam Thorne. He is great at playing a tortured hero. And for Talia, how about Kristin Bell? She’s got the look and she can also do the tortured thing, like she did on Heroes.

TQ:  Do you and Talia have anything in common?

Erin: Yes. I started Shadow Bound after I finished my masters in Anthropology. Talia is just finishing her PhD. We both have more introverted natures, but she comes out of her shell a bit more than me. I can scream pretty dang loud too, but Death never shows up when I do. :)

TQ: Why wraiths?

Erin: Shadow Bound’s world building has a lot to do with life and death. Wraiths were a kind of experiment. I wondered if the most selfless act is to give up your life, the most selfish act would be to give up your death, and in so doing, become immortal. My monsters, then, had to be so self-centered that they would do anything to achieve that end. And if they wanted to sustain a semblance of humanity, they had to feed on the souls of other people. The fact that they have a corporeal body put them, for me, in the category of wraiths.

TQ: What's next?

Erin: I am looking forward with great anticipation to the release of the second book in my Shadow series, Shadow Fall, which comes out July 27.
