Fortune's Blight
The Shattered Kingdoms 2
Tor Fantasy, October 6, 2015
Mass Market Paperback, 432 pages
Hardcover and eBook, February 14, 2015

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors? - Part 18
Fortune's Blight by Evie Manieri continues the conflict begun in Blood's Pride. Victory for the Shadari rebels has come at a terrible price. Hardship, superstition, and petty feuds poison King Daryan's young reign, and entire families are vanishing without a trace. Help is nowhere to be found, for their Nomas allies have troubles of their own and the Mongrel, plagued by the sins of her violent past, has disappeared.

While Daryan struggles to maintain the peace, Eofar and Rho are racing to their northern homeland to plead—or fight—for the Shadar's independence. But Norland has changed, and they soon find themselves embroiled in the court politics of an empire about to implode.

Meanwhile, the Mongrel's path carries her deep into Norland's frozen wastes to redeem a promise—one that forces her into the heart of the growing conflict.

As the foundations of the two far-flung countries begin to crack, an enigmatic figure watches from a tower room in Ravindal Castle. She is old, and a prisoner, but her reach is long, and her patience is about to be rewarded....

The Wonder of All Things
Mira, July 28, 2015
Trade Paperback, 304 pages
Hardcover and eBook, September 30, 2014

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors? - Part 18
On the heels of his critically acclaimed and New York Times bestselling debut novel, The Returned, Jason Mott delivers a spellbinding tale of love and sacrifice

On an ordinary day, at an air show like that in any small town across the country, a plane crashes into a crowd of spectators. After the dust clears, a thirteen-year-old girl named Ava is found huddled beneath a pocket of rubble with her best friend, Wash. He is injured and bleeding, and when Ava places her hands over him, his wounds disappear.

Ava has an unusual gift: she can heal others of their physical ailments. Until the air show tragedy, her gift was a secret. Now the whole world knows, and suddenly people from all over the globe begin flocking to her small town, looking for healing and eager to catch a glimpse of The Miracle Child. But Ava's unique ability comes at a great cost, and as she grows weaker with each healing, she soon finds herself having to decide just how much she's willing to give up in order to save the ones she loves most.

Elegantly written, deeply intimate and emotionally astute, The Wonder of All Things is an unforgettable story and a poignant reminder of life's extraordinary gifts.

Against a Brightening Sky
Delia's Shadow 3
Tor Books, October 6, 2015
Hardcover and eBook, 336 pages

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors? - Part 18
By 1919 the Great War has ended, peace talks are under way in Paris, and the world has been forever changed. Delia Martin, apprentice practitioner of magical arts, and her husband, Police Captain Gabriel Ryan, face the greatest challenge of their lives when fragments from the war descend on San Francisco.

As Delia prepares to meet friends at a St. Patrick's Day parade, the strange ghost of a European princess appears in her mirror. Her pleasant outing becomes a nightmare as the ghost reappears moments after a riot starts, warning her as a rooftop gunman begins shooting into the crowd. Delia rushes to get her friends to safety, and Gabe struggles to stop the killing-and to save himself.

Delia and Gabe realize all the chaos and bloodshed had one purpose-to flush Alina from hiding, a young woman with no memory of anything but her name.

As Delia works to discover how the princess ghost's secrets connect to this mysterious young woman, and Gabe tracks a ruthless killer around his city, they find all the answers hinge on two questions: Who is Alina...and why can't she remember?

Against a Brightening Sky is the thrilling conclusion to Jaime Lee Moyer's glittering historical fantasy series.

The View From Monday - February 16, 2015

Happy Presidents Day to those in the US. This 3rd Monday in February used to be a celebration of (George) Washington's Birthday though not his actual birth date (February 22nd). It has been expanded to include Lincoln's Birthday (February 12th) in some places or other Presidents in other places. I imagine it's still called Washington's Birthday somewhere in the US. It is a Federal holiday and school's (and government offices) are closed here. Since it's -5° F and feels like -21° F with the wind chill I'm sure everyone is happy that they don't have to go outside. It's a terrific day for reading (if I didn't have to shovel...).

Fearless
Pax Arcana 3
Orbit, August 11, 2015
Trade Paperback and eBook, 400 pages

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A CLEARCUT CASE OF RITE AND WRONG...

When your last name is Charming, rescuing virgins comes with the territory, even when the virgin in question is a nineteen-year-old college boy.

Someone, somewhere, has declared war on Kevin Kichida, and that someone has a long list of magical predators on their rolodex. The good news is that Kevin lives in a town where Ted Cahill is the new sheriff and old ally of John Charming.

The attacks on Kevin seem to be a pattern, and the more John and his new team follow that thread, the deeper they find themselves in a maze of supernatural threats, family secrets, and age-old betrayals. The more John learns, the more convinced he becomes that Kevin Kichida isn't just a victim, he's a sacrifice waiting to happen. And that thread John's following? It's really a fuse...

FEARLESS is the third novel in an urban fantasy series which gives a new twist to the Prince Charming tale. The first two novels are Charming & Daring.

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors in 2015? - Part 9
Shower of Stones
Jeroun 2
Night Shade Books, July 7, 2015
Hardcover and eBook, 288 pages

The follow-up to Zachary Jernigan’s critically acclaimed literary debut, No Return.

At the moment of his greatest victory, before a crowd of thousands, the warrior Vedas Tezul renounced his faith, calling for revolt against the god Adrash, imploring mankind to unite in this struggle.

Good intentions count for nothing. In the three months since his sacrilegious pronouncement, the world has not changed for the better. In fact, it is now on the verge of dying. The Needle hangs broken in orbit above Jeroun, each of its massive iron spheres poised to fall and blanket the planet’s surface in dust. Long-held truces between Adrashi and Anadrashi break apart as panic spreads.

With no allegiance to either side, the disgraced soldier Churls walks into the divided city of Danoor with a simple plan: murder the monster named Fesuy Amendja, and retrieve from captivity the only two individuals that still matter to her—Vedas Tezul, and the constructed man Berun. The simple plan goes awry, as simple plans do, and in the process Churls and her companions are introduced to one of the world’s deepest secrets: a madman, insisting he is the link to an ancient world, offering the most tempting lie of all . . . hope.

Concluding the visceral, inventive narrative begun in No Return, Shower of Stones pits men against gods and swords against civilization-destroying magic in the fascinatingly harsh world of Jeroun.

The Venusian Gambit
Daedalus 3
Night Shade Books, May 5, 2015
Trade Paperback and eBook, 352 pages

The last chapter of the dimension-spanning Daedalus series brings the 19th and 22nd centuries together for an explosive finale in the jungles of Venus!

In the year 2135, dangerous alien life forms freed in the destruction of Saturn’s moon Enceladus are making their way towards Earth. A task force spearheaded by Lt. Cmdr. Shaila Jain is scrambling to beat them there while simultaneously trying to save crewmember Stephane Durand, who was infected during the mission to Saturn and is now controlled by a form of life intent on reopening a transdimensional rift and destroying the human race. But Jain doesn’t realize that the possessed Stephane has bigger plans, beaming critical data to other conspirators suspiciously heading not for Earth, but for Venus…

In 1809—a Napoleonic era far different from our own—the French have occupied England with their Corps Eternélle, undead soldiers risen to new life through the darkest Alchemy. Only the actions of Lord Admiral Thomas Weatherby and the Royal Navy have kept the French contained to Earth. But the machinations of old enemies point to a bold and daring gambit: an ancient weapon, presumed lost in the jungles of Venus.

Now, Weatherby must choose whether to stay and fight to retake his homeland or pursue the French to the green planet. And Shaila must decide if it’s possible to save the man she loves, or if he must be sacrificed for the good of two dimensions. In the dark, alien jungles of Venus, humanity’s fate in both dimensions hangs in the balance—forcing past and present to once again join forces against an ancient terror.

Captain Vlora is a powder mage in the Adran army. Once the favored, adopted daughter of the field marshal, she is now a pariah amongst those she called her family. She has three days to find him; she will have to make new friends and test the limits of her skills. Fail, and good soldiers will die. Succeed and maybe, just maybe, she can begin to work her way back into the field marshal's good graces.

Trade Paperback, 640 pages
Previously published in Hardcover and eBook, May 2014

GUNPOWDER AND BULLETS WILL DETERMINE THE VICTOR.

When invasion looms...
Tamas's invasion of Kez ends in disaster when a Kez counter-offensive leaves him cut off behind enemy lines with only a fraction of his army, no supplies, and no hope of reinforcements. Drastically outnumbered and pursued by the enemy's best, he must lead his men on a reckless march through northern Kez to safety, and back over the mountains so that he can defend his country from an angry god, Kresimir.

But the threats are closer to home...
In Adro, Inspector Adamat wants only to rescue his wife. To do so he must track down and confront the evil Lord Vetas. He has questions for Vetas concerning his enigmatic master, but the answers will lead Adamat on a darker journey.

Who will lead the charge?
Tamas's generals bicker among themselves, the brigades lose ground every day beneath the Kez onslaught, and Kresimir wants the head of the man who shot him in the eye. With Tamas and his powder cabal presumed dead, Taniel Two-shot finds himself as the last line of defense against Kresimir's advancing army.

The View from Monday - January 27, 2014

Happy last Monday in January! The first month of the year has flown by it seems. I recently finished reading Hive Monkey (Ack-Ack Macaque 2) by Gareth L. Powell and Shovel Ready (Spademan 1) by Adam Sternbergh. Both novels were terrific.  I'm presently reading Breach Zone (Shadow Ops 3) by Myke Cole. You can expect a review on the 29th.

In other news: Since The Qwillery has over 700,000 pageviews (711,733 as of this morning), I'm planning a 7 book giveaway or something like that. I'm trying to decide whether it should be multi-genre or just one genre. I'll keep you posted!

Interview with Evie Manieri, author of Blood's Pride, and Giveaway - February 21, 2013

Please welcome Evie Manieri to The Qwillery as part of the 2013 Debut Author Challenge Interviews. Blood's Pride was published on February 19, 2013 in the US. You may read Evie's Guest Blog - Female Characters in Fantasy: Sword Length Isn't Everything - here.

Interview with Evie Manieri, author of Blood's Pride, and Giveaway - February 21, 2013

TQ:  Welcome to The Qwillery.

Evie:  Thank you very much for having me! It’s a real pleasure to be part of the 2013 Debut Author Challenge.

TQ:  When and why did you start writing?

Evie:  I started writing when I was a kid, and I never really stopped. Our elementary school librarian had this lovely idea to laminate little ”books” written by students, and make cards for the card catalogue so that other students could check them out just like real books. My book was about dragons. I’d like to think that my writing has improved since the second grade. My drawing… not so much.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Evie:  I try to keep my hands busy while I’m not actually typing, to stay focused while I’m thinking. Sometimes I’ll keep my knitting in my lap and pick that up; if the knitting project is too complicated, I use worry beads, or the little felt sculpture of a fox my daughter got me for Christmas. I can’t write sitting at a desk, either. I sit curled up in an armchair or on one side of the couch, like a cat, eating Pepperidge Farm Goldfish from a bowl. Yep, that’s me - a typing, Goldfish-eating cat with borderline OCD.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Evie:  I’m a plotter in denial. I tell myself I can’t work unless I know exactly where the story is going, but then I never stick to what I’ve worked out, not even remotely. I’m also constantly revising backwards as I go along. It’s not an efficient process, and I don’t recommend it. It’s like knitting a sweater while someone’s unravelling it from the other end.

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Evie:  The biggest challenge is to stay emotionally connected to my work. It can be very hard to keep myself open in that way, particularly when my outside life is stressful, or when I’m dealing with something that’s too close to my own unresolved stuff. At the same time, that’s when the best work happens. The instant I lose that closeness – when the writing becomes about moving chess pieces around on a board - I get frustrated. Those are the times when I should just take a break, but I’m usually too stubborn to do it.

TQ:  Describe Blood's Pride in 140 characters or less.

EvieBlood’s Pride is about an epic rebellion, but one in which the action takes place on a very personal level – or put another way, a fantasy novel as told by an unabashed shipper.

TQ:  What inspired you to write Blood's Pride?

Evie:  Blood’s Pride really started with the character of the Mongrel. I had this image of her appearing out of the desert. I didn’t really know much about her story at first, but I felt very connected to her, and knew it was one I wanted to explore. She and her world evolved together after that, along with other characters who had their own stories to be told. The more deeply I went into it, the more discoveries I made, until it all wove together strand by strand.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for Blood's Pride?

Evie:  I researched different things here and there – details about biology, climate, flora and fauna, all sorts of other things that came up as I was working, often only tangentially related because I was curious or procrastinating – but since this is a wholly invented world, my research informed my choices more than it dictated them.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? The hardest and why?

Evie:  Frea was by far the easiest character to write. She is a juggernaut, all straight lines and fury. She doesn’t allow herself the slightest bit of introspection, so her resolve never wavers. Harotha was the hardest because she’s just the opposite. She’s conflicted in so many ways, at any moment she could go off in a dozen different directions. Harotha and I also share some significant flaws, and that makes it harder to stay open to her than some of the others.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Blood's Pride?

Evie:  One of my favorites is Isa’s scene in her mother’s tomb. It’s a pivotal scene about 2/3 of the way through, so I can’t give away much more than that. It was extraordinarily difficult to write from her point of view at that moment, but as a result, I think the scene is as raw and visceral as it should be. That’s also the scene when Daryan shows us the man he’s capable of being: compassionate, intelligent and with all the strength of his convictions. I fall a little more in love with him every time I read it.

TQ:  What's next?

Evie:  I’m working on the next book in the Shattered Kingdoms series, Fortune’s Blight. It picks up right where Blood’s Pride ends, and opens up an even wider world for us to explore.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Evie:  Thank you so much for letting me stop by!

About Blood's Pride

Blood's Pride
Shattered Kingdoms 1
Tor Books, February 19, 2013
Hardcover and eBook, 528 pages

Interview with Evie Manieri, author of Blood's Pride, and Giveaway - February 21, 2013
Rising from their sea-torn ships like vengeful, pale phantoms, the Norlanders laid waste to the Shadar under cover of darkness. They forced the once-peaceful fisher folk into slavery and forged an alliance with their former trading partners, the desert-dwelling Nomas tribe, cutting off any hope of salvation.

Now, two decades after the invasion, a rebellion gathers strength in the dark corridors of the city. A small faction of Shadari have hired the Mongrel, an infamous mercenary, to aid their fledgling uprising—but with her own shadowy ties to the region, she is a frighteningly volatile ally. Has she really come to lead a revolution, or for a more sinister purpose all her own?

This thrilling new epic fantasy is set in a quasi-Medieval Mediterranean region, drawing together the warrior culture of Vikings, the wanderlust of desert nomads, and the oracles of ancient Greece. Evie Manieri's Blood's Pride is an intricate, lush fantasy novel full of taut action, gut-wrenching betrayal, and soaring romance.

About Evie

Interview with Evie Manieri, author of Blood's Pride, and Giveaway - February 21, 2013
Evie Manieri has always been fascinated by intricacy. Her studies in medieval history and theater inform her writing, and when not weaving together the threads of her plots, she can be found creating airy lace shawls or singing Renaissance polyphony. The only thing she likes more than a thunderstorm is a really violent thunderstorm. Evie lives in New York City with her husband, her daughter, a drowsy dog and a badly spoiled parakeet.

He came back to kill a tyrant. He found the Devil instead. An amazing historical novel with a supernatural twist set after the English Civil War. This is the stunning debut from Clifford Beal.

He came back to kill a tyrant. He found the Devil instead.

1653: The long and bloody English Civil War is at an end. King Charles is dead and Oliver Cromwell rules the land as king in all but name. Richard Treadwell, an exiled royalist officer and soldier-for-hire to the King of France and his all-powerful advisor, the wily Cardinal Mazarin, burns with revenge for those who deprived him of his family and fortune. He decides upon a self-appointed mission to return to England in secret and assassinate the new Lord Protector. Once back on English soil however, he learns that his is not the only plot in motion.

A secret army run by a deluded Puritan is bent on the same quest, guided by the Devil’s hand. When demonic entities are summoned, Treadwell finds himself in a desperate turnaround: he must save Cromwell to save England from a literal descent into Hell. But first he has to contend with a wife he left in Devon who believes she’s a widow, and a furious Paris mistress who has trailed him to England, jeopardising everything. Treadwell needs allies fast. Can he convince the man sent to forcibly drag him back to Cardinal Mazarin? A young king’s musketeer named d’Artagnan.

Black dogs and demons; religion and magic; Freemasons and Ranters. It’s a dangerous new Republic for an old cavalier coming home again.

2013 Debut Author Challenge - February 2013 Debuts
A brilliantly crafted modern tale from acclaimed film critic and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill—part Neil Gaiman, part Guillermo Del Toro, part William S. Burroughs—that charts the lives of two boys from their star-crossed childhood in the realm of magic and mystery to their anguished adulthoods

There is another world than our own—one no closer than a kiss and one no further than our nightmares—where all the stuff of which dreams are made is real and magic is just a step away. But once you see that world, you will never be the same.

Dreams and Shadows takes us beyond this veil. Once bold explorers and youthful denizens of this magical realm, Ewan is now an Austin musician who just met his dream girl, and Colby, meanwhile, cannot escape the consequences of an innocent wish. But while Ewan and Colby left the Limestone Kingdom as children, it has never forgotten them. And in a world where angels relax on rooftops, whiskey-swilling genies argue metaphysics with foul-mouthed wizards, and monsters in the shadows feed on fear, you can never outrun your fate.

Dreams and Shadows is a stunning and evocative debut about the magic and monsters in our world and in our self.

Sasha Naradnyo is a gangster. He's a gangster with heart, sure, but Sasha sticks his neck out for no man. That's how you stay alive in Crack City, a colony stuffed deep into the crust of the otherwise unlivable planet Peezgtaan. Alive only—because if you're human, you don't prosper, at least not for long. Sasha is a second generation City native. His parents came to this rock figuring to make it big, only to find that they'd been recruited as an indentured labor force for alien overlords known as the Varoki.

Now a pair of rich young Varoki under the care of a beautiful human nanny are fleeing Peezgtaan, and Sasha is recruited to help. He'd prefer to rather leave the little alien lordlings to their fate, but certain considerations—such as Sasha's own imminent demise if he remains—make it beneficial for him to take on the job.

Sasha discovers his simple choice has thrust him in the midst of a political battle that could remake the galactic balance of power and save humanity from slow death by servitude. Now all he has to do is survive and keep his charges alive on a hostile planet undergoing its own revolution.

But it's the galaxy that had better watch out. For now the toughest thug in Crack City has gotten his first taste of real freedom. He likes it, and he wants more.

But when her mentor and colleague, Jeffrey, selects her to join a special team to venture Outside for the first time, Natasha’s allegiances to home, society, and above all to Jeffrey are tested. She is forced to make a choice that may put the people she loves most in grave danger and change the world as she knows it.

Female Characters in Fantasy: Sword Length Isn't Everything

“Strong female characters” is a term I see tossed around a lot in the world of genre fiction, and it’s a label I’ll happily slap on to BLOOD’S PRIDE - in fluorescent 80’s orange, preferably. But when I was actually writing the book, I just wanted to create a world that felt absolutely authentic, and for me that meant including women who were visible, relatable and – most of all - active participants in their own stories.

The gender split for the main characters in BLOOD’S PRIDE is nearly even, but female characters aren’t compelling when they’re stuck in tired, passive roles. It’s the “strong” part that’s the delicious gravy on my open-faced world-building sandwich.

I love warrior women, and BLOOD’S PRIDE certainly has its fair share of the sword-wielding variety. But “warrior” is not a character trait: it’s an occupation. Just because these women are fighters doesn’t mean they’re all cut from the same cloth, any more than the men they fight against or alongside. At the same time, a woman doesn’t need a sword to be a fighter. Sometimes the most effective weapons are a keen mind, a courageous heart and a good bit of stubborn determination.

You can put a sword in a character’s hand, give her skill and physical strength, make her passionate or intriguingly laconic… but a collection of traits doesn’t make a strong character. I like it best when characters are revealed through their relationships – and with such a varied cast at my disposal, I had the fun of delving into all kinds of relationships. Some are romantic, absolutely, but more than a few have nothing to do with men at all: sisters in constant conflict, damaged by the same tragedy but in very different ways; two married women, each critical of the other’s choices; a woman so twisted by the loss of her own mother that she can’t accept the love of someone eager to fill that role.

That brings me to two issues that females in fantasy seem to face all of the time, but which you won’t find in BLOOD’S PRIDE: constrictive gender roles, and sexual violence.

Every woman I know deals with gender bias in some form, but none of them frame their lives or goals in those terms. As a source of conflict, I find it dull and beside the point: I’m interested in exploring a person’s life, not whether or not she’s allowed to have it. This is the point where someone usually brings up the idea of “historical accuracy” and asserts that a pre-industrial society with gender equality is not realistic. Happily for me, I’m not writing historical fiction, but speculative fiction – and I'd like to speculate about a world where a woman can get up in the morning, get dressed, and get on with her day without having to “defy convention” every five seconds.

As for sexual violence, few things turn me off more than seeing victimization treated as a short-cut to character development. Sexual violence has its place in fiction alongside everything else, but it’s far too complex an issue to use as a device for moving a plot forward or motivating a character (particularly when the character being motivated is not the person victimized, but someone angry on her behalf.)

As a writer, I’m hoping to bring to my female characters the same degree of authenticity I would to any character. My attitudes are not shaped only by a mythologized version of medieval European societies, but by my experiences now, as a woman in the 21st century with a watchful eye on the trend of history. It’s a happy coincidence that on the day I sat down to write this post, the Pentagon lifted the ban on women in combat. As President Obama said, “valor knows no gender.” Well, amen to that.
