The View From Monday - October 7, 2013

Happy first Monday in October! This is such a fun month - New York Comic Con takes place this coming weekend and Halloween is later this month. I just purchased a rather large skull that lights up on the inside (pictures at some point) and the kids and I are planning our Halloween graveyard.

I started reading Debra Mullins Prodigal Son (Tor, October 1, 2013). This is Debra's first paranormal romance novel. She has written many historical romance novels. So far I'm liking it but if one of the main characters mentions again that she put up her condo as collateral for a bond for someone who skipped and she may lose her condo, I may just delete the book. It's really annoying. I get that she's worried about it. I actually got it the first time. I tend to remember what I read. Now it's just annoying. I think I will keep count to see how many times it is mentioned.

Have you ever read a book where something is mentioned ad nauseum? Did it bother you? Did you finish the book?  What makes you stop reading a book?

Review: Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain 2) by Amanda Carlson - April 29, 2013
It hasn't been the best week for Jessica McClain.

Her newly found mate has been kidnapped by a Goddess hell-bent on revenge, and Jessica is positive she can save him.

But being the only female werewolf in town comes with its own set of rules and powers... if only she understood them.

Aided by two vamps, two loyal Pack members, and one very reluctant human, Jessica must rescue her man while coming to terms with what being a wolf really means.

The second novel in the Jessica McClain series is a full on action adventure featuring one angry Goddess and plenty of monsters, demons, and a few newly risen beasties...

My Thoughts:

Hot Blooded, the 2nd Jessica McClain novel, picks up immediately after the end of Full Blooded. Jessica has only been a werewolf for a few days. She is the only female werewolf in the world. Prophecies regarding what she is swirl around and endanger her as well as those close to her.

Hot Blooded is as much about Jessica starting to learn about her powers as it is about her desire/need to rescue her mate. As the story progresses we learn more and more about Jessica’s powers along with her. I suspect that we are very far from learning all about what she can do and who/what she is. At the moment she is running on adrenaline and gut instincts with more than a little help from her wolf. Her powers surprise her and those around her. One of the things I like most about Jessica is that, despite wielding what seems to be unimaginable powers, she continues to be compassionate. Becoming a wolf had not changed her essential human nature. It will be interesting to see if she struggles with this over future novels. This is not to say that she can’t make the tough decisions, she certainly does. She simply does not solve every problem by killing it.

Jessica does not go it alone in Hot Blooded. There is a lovely supporting cast of characters with her on this journey. It’s a pleasure reading about Jessica’s interactions with her friends/companions. Ms. Carlson does not skimp on the bad guys. They were awful, of course. There is also a touch of humor, which keeps the story from being grim at all the right times.

Hot Blooded is wonderfully fast paced. Unlike the prior novel there is no cliffhanger, but it does end with new issues for Jessica to face. I certainly hope that she brings along her friends in the next novel.

Ms. Carlson does not disappoint in the second Jessica McClain novel. Hot Blooded is full of action, monsters galore (some of which I’d never seen before) and a psychotic and vicious Goddess. I’m looking forward to Jessica’s next adventure. Jessica McClain remains one of my favorite Urban Fantasy heroines.

Note: While you don’t have to read Full Blooded to understand the events in Hot Blooded, I suggest you do because it’s a terrific read. You may read my review of Blooded (a prequel eNovella) here, of Full Blooded here and read an interview with Amanda here.

My Thoughts:

Full Blooded is the first novel in the Jessica McClain series. It was preceded by Blooded, an eNovella, that was published in April.

Jessica is the only female born into an all male race. This leads to problems based on superstitions held by some of the werewolves. Being human and female has not been easy. In the novella, Blooded, we get a glimpse of the difficult life that Jessica has been leading and she finally gets to leave and live away from her father's Pack. Full Blooded picks up her story several years later.

So what did I like about Full Blooded, Amanda Carlson's debut novel? Everything!

I love Jessica McClain. She is terrific. She's trying to live her own life, under the radar. Then she becomes the only female werewolf in the world. To say that things get very intense for her and those around her would be an amazing understatement. She's tough, smart and not perfect. Being a human for so long makes her different. Having grown up with the Pack but not part of the Pack she has some idea what to expect as a werewolf. But being is different than watching. She has a lot to learn. This becomes complicated by events rapidly unfolding because she's become a werewolf.

The supporting cast is very well done. The distinct personalities of her brother, father and others in the Pack are well developed. In Full Blooded we meet more of the not so good guys. They are suitably creepy and I enjoyed disliking them very much.

Is there romance in Full Blooded? Sort of. I can say the Jessica has some fine men to choose from! You'll have to read the novel to find out.

Full Blooded is fast-paced and action-packed with world building that flows organically with the story. At no time did I find the story bogged down with information - mythological or otherwise. At no time did I feel lost. Full Blooded ends with several unresolved issues that I'm really looking forward to reading more about in Hot Blooded (April 2013).

Bottom LineFull Blooded is a terrifically written thrill ride that I did not want to get off. Jessica McClain has become one of my favorite Urban Fantasy heroines. I'm hooked.

I give Full Blooded 5 Qwills.

Interview with Amanda Carlson and Giveaway - August 6, 2012

TQ:   What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Amanda:  Well, earlier this year I got myself a stability ball for a work chair. The sitting all day was killing me. So most days I get up, roll out of bed, grab some coffee and start bouncing my way through my writing day. It beats sitting rigid, but it took time to get used to it and I’d have to say it’s definitely quirky.

TQ:   Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Amanda:  Lately I’ve been diving into some great UF. I love Amanda Bonilla and her Shaede Assassin series. There are a lot of up and coming authors I’m really excited about, but the ones who sparked my love of fantasy for the first time were Ann Rice & Stephen King. I transitioned from Sweet Valley High right into their works. There was no YA back then. It was a love that started young and stayed with me.

TQ:   Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Amanda:  I’m a pantser all the way. I don’t even put a post it note on the wall. I go through the story without looking back, and then I edit. And edit. And edit. For me the real writing is in the editing. But the rush of getting the story out is the most fun.

TQ:   What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Amanda:  Concentrating on the edits the second or third time through is always tough. A book needs a lot of revisiting to get it right. Trying to stay on task throughout repeat edits, especially if they are in a row, is the most challenging. But, as I just said, I do love the editing process, so it’s not too bad. It feels great once you reach that finish line.

TQ:   Describe Full Blooded (Jessica McClain 1) in 140 characters or less.

Amanda:  It’s a fun, fast-paced, snarky, action-packed romp.

TQ:   What inspired you to write Full Blooded?

Amanda:  I started this book years ago and really wanted to write a heroine I wanted to read, as most writers do. The opening scene played out in my mind of Jessica shifting, and that was it. I ran with it from there.

TQ:   What sort of research did you do for Full Blooded?

Amanda:  I didn’t do a lot of research for this book, but I did pull in some actual myths and names. Selene is based on the actual Greek Lunar Goddess named Selene. The name Eudoxia I took from one of Ivan the Terrible’s children, as well as some of the other characters who come up later. I had to research distances that were logical, but the world building was all me. That was the best part.

TQ:   Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Amanda:  Jessica, my heroine, was the easiest. Her voice is front and center in my mind. None of the characters are too hard to write, since they all come into my head fully formed and ready to go. I enjoy writing all the voices. The humorous ones are easier than the serious ones—that’s why you’ll find a lot of humor in my books.

TQ:   Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Full Blooded?

Amanda:  I’m a sucker for action scenes. I love them. Jess gets to kick some ass in this book and each scene was a thrill to write. I loved the sexy scenes too. I’m not sure if I have a “for sure” favorite, but there’s a scene in the end where a character is describing an attack. That one always makes me laugh.

TQ:    What's next?

Amanda:  I’m writing book three, COLD BLOODED, right now and having a blast. After this goes to my editor, it’s time to see if they’d like to option more in the series. Cross your fingers, because I’m excited to keep writing.

TQ:   Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Amanda:  Thanks for having me! It was such a pleasure to stop by and chat with you. I hope you enjoy the series.

My thoughts:

Blooded weighs in at 48 pages on my Nook and includes a preview of Full Blooded. It's full of action, tension, and big bad (were)wolves.

I completely enjoyed reading this ePrequel to the upcoming Full Blooded. There are a couple of very intense fight scenes in the novella interspersed with conversations that give the background for what has happened and is happening that has made Jessica want to leave her father's pack. Being considered a curse has not been easy on her. It's becoming more and more dangerous for Jessica to stay.

Jessica McClain is tough, determined.and defiant. She can throw physical as well as verbal punches. In the novella Jessica takes a big risk in an attempt to make things a bit better for herself until she can convince her father to let her leave.

Ms. Carlson's writing and story telling are wonderful in this fast-paced novella. This little taste of Jessica McClain's story has whetted my appetite for the main course, Full Blooded, in September.

I give Blooded 5 Qwills.
