Guest Blog by Kerry Schafer and Review of Dead Before Dying

I am over-the-top excited to be back here at the Qwillery. It's been an interesting three years and as I look back at my wide-eyed newbie self, standing at the threshold of a brand new publishing career, I'm a little bemused by how much things have changed since then.
I believed – oh how I believed – that the whole world lay open before me. Finally, after years of writing and editing and re-writing, after all of the querying and rejection, hope and despair, I'd made it! Between was out on bookstore shelves and all was right with the world. I imagined a long line of succeeding books, all sold with no effort, probably to Penguin. After all, they'd already bought two books and everything I wrote was only going to get better so why wouldn't they want to pick those up as well?
Ah, grasshopper. So young. So trusting and full of hope.
Okay, maybe not exactly young. But otherwise I was as starry-eyed as a fool in love. Publishing is a business first and foremost. It is not a romance, and certainly not a marriage. Penguin looked at my previous sales numbers, did some sort of math, and declined their option to contract the third book of my trilogy.
I went through a dry spell that felt, at the time, like a catastrophic drought, on a par with the dust bowl of the fifties. It felt like going back to square one, with no writing contract and nothing ready to market. In retrospect, my bout of self pity and despair was mercifully brief. Publishing is a business. Writing is something else. Contract or no contract, I'm always going to be writing.
So I wrote and published the Dream Wars e-novellas through The Knight Agency's distribution arm. I finished the third book of the Between trilogy, The Nothing, and published it independently, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Indie publishing is creatively satisfying, but I've come to believe that a hybrid writing career is a smart thing for an author to do, and I wanted some more writing contracts before thinking about another Indie book. So I went to work and rewrote an old manuscript about an idea I loved – a paranormal mystery thriller set in a retirement home. Dead Before Dying sold to Diversion Books, and was released on February 9. I have to admit that I love this book and it's lead, Maureen Keslyn. She's older for a paranormal heroine, (nearly sixty) fiercely independent, highly skilled, and doesn't give a rat's ass what anybody thinks about her.
My agent, Deidre, loved Maureen and the voice I used in Dead Before Dying. She asked me to step out of my usual mode and try women's fiction. The result of that experiment is Closer Home, acquired by Lake Union Press and coming out on March 22nd under the pen name Kerry Anne King.
It's been a busy three years, both on and off the page. I've learned a lot, but I'm pretty sure when I look back on the launch of Dead Before Dying three years from now I'll be shaking my head and contemplating everything I thought I knew, but didn't.

Dead Before Dying
Shadow Valley Manor 1
Diversion Books, February 9, 2016
Trade Paperback and eBook, 236 pages

Guest Blog by Kerry Schafer and Review of Dead Before Dying
Twisting and eerie, sharp and unforgettable, DEAD BEFORE DYING brings a heroine worthy of Sue Grafton to a terror worthy of Dean Koontz.

In this supernatural thriller, shot through with biting wit, Maureen Keslyn checks herself in to Shadow Valley Manor to recuperate and rehabilitate from her last job. There, she runs afoul of the stern director and makes friends with some of the other residents, mostly older, all harboring either a secret or a grudge. With secrets of her own, like why she has her own Federal Agent checking up on her, and how she injured herself in the first place, Maureen fits right in, even as she sticks out like a thorn.

But Shadow Valley isn’t just for rest—Maureen is working undercover, seeking to find and eradicate whatever forces are picking off the residents (and staff) at a grisly clip. With her resources dwindling one death at a time, and unnatural forces seething to rise up once more, Maureen’s experience fighting the supernatural will be her only hope to destroy a clever and powerful evil—and her only chance at surviving it. She'll need people as paranoid as she is—from the sheriff, to the undertaker's daughter, to a cook whose knife skills in the kitchen could prove deadly out of it—if she is going to bring rest to the weary, and peace to the dead…

Qwill's Thoughts

I've always been a fan of Kerry Schafer's writing, especially her Between series (Between, Wakeworld, and The Nothing) but she has ramped it up quite a few notches with her supernatural thriller, Dead Before Dying. Dead Before Dying features a middle-aged protagonist - Maureen Keslyn. She's an older FBI agent who is seriously wounded during last assignment. She limps, has aches, and has recently nearly died. She also is gruff, sarcastic and has a mostly bad attitude. She's in no physical condition to take on a new assignment when she's called in to help with unsettling events at Shadow Valley Manor, a former home for unwed mothers and now retirement home.

I really did not like Maureen at first but quickly warmed to her intelligence, boldness, dark humor, and tenacity. Telling Maureen not to do something seems to elicit the opposite response. She also has huge trust issues which seem to be completely justified. In her line of work trusting the wrong person often ends in death. Schafer provides plenty of background about Maureen through a series of well-placed flashbacks.

While Maureen is not interested in staying at Shadow Valley Manor initially people start dying and she digs in determined to find out what is going on. Along the way she encounters number of people she deeply distrusts - the local sheriff (Jake), the Manor's cook (Matt), and the daughter of the town undertaker (Sophronia). Each of these characters is well-developed, intriguing, and has something to hide. The residents of the home are interesting in their own ways and often a bit unusual.

The supernatural in Dead Before Dying is extremely well done, creepy and frightening. The backstory to what is actually happening is chilling. There are some fabulous action scenes, a bit of gore, some unique supernaturals, and unexpected twists and turns.

Dead Before Dying is tautly written, exciting and compulsively readable. Maureen Keslyn is a fabulous protagonist and I'm looking forward to Keslyn's next story (which is hinted at in the end of Dead Before Dying). If you are a fan of supernatural thrillers or mysteries Dead Before Dying is a must read!

Victory rests on the shoulders of Vaelin Al Sorna, Battle Lord of the Realm. However, the Volarians have a new weapon on their side that Vaelin must destroy if the Realm is to prevail: a mysterious Ally with the ability to grant unnaturally long life to his servants. The Waking Fire
The Draconis Memoria 1
Ace, July 5, 2016
Hardcover and eBook, 592 pages

[cover not yet available]
The New York Times bestselling Raven’s Shadow Trilogy was a perfect read for “fans of broadscale epic fantasy along the lines of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series and George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels.”* Now, Anthony Ryan begins a new saga, The Draconis Memoria…

Throughout the vast lands controlled by the Ironship Syndicate, nothing is more prized than the blood of drakes. Harvested from the veins of captive or hunted Reds, Green, Blues and Blacks, it can be distilled into elixirs that give fearsome powers to the rare men and women who have the ability harness them—known as the blood-blessed.

But not many know the truth: that the lines of drakes are weakening. If they fail, war with the neighboring Corvantine Empire will follow swiftly. The Syndicate’s last hope resides in whispers of the existence of another breed of drake, far more powerful than the rest, and the few who have been chosen by fate to seek it.

Claydon Torcreek is a petty thief and an unregistered blood-blessed, who finds himself pressed into service by the protectorate and sent to wild, uncharted territories in search of a creature he believes is little more than legend. Lizanne Lethridge is a formidable spy and assassin, facing gravest danger on an espionage mission deep into the heart of enemy territory. And Corrick Hilemore is the second lieutenant of an ironship, whose pursuit of ruthless brigands leads him to a far greater threat at the edge of the world.

As lives and empires clash and intertwine, as the unknown and the known collide, all three must fight to turn the tide of a coming war, or drown in its wake.

STEP INTO A UNIVERSE OF DARING ADVENTURE, THRILLING POWER, AND MULTIPLE LONDONS.

Kell is one of the last Travelers-magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes, connected by one magical city.

There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad king-George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered-and where Kell was raised alongside Rhys Maresh, the rougish heir to a flourishing empire. White London-a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors? - Part 20
Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games-an extravagent international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries-a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again-and so to keep magic's balance, another London must fall.

Feature: The Between Novels by Kerry Schafer
Vivian Maylor can’t sleep. Maybe it’s because she just broke up with her boyfriend and moved to a new town, or it could be the stress of her new job at the hospital. But perhaps it’s because her dreams have started to bleed through into her waking hours.

All of her life Vivian has rejected her mother’s insane ramblings about Dreamworlds for concrete science and fact, until an emergency room patient ranting about dragons spontaneously combusts before her eyes—forcing Viv to consider the idea that her visions of mythical beasts might be real.

And when a chance encounter leads her to a man she knows only from her dreams, Vivian finds herself falling into a world that seems strange and familiar all at once—a world where the line between dream and reality is hard to determine, and hard to control…

"A smart, resilient heroine, a scarred hero, dragons that are all too real and much too close, and myriad doorways that lead from a modern ER into dreams and waking and everything in Between make for a sparkling debut novel. Most enjoyable." – Carol Berg, author

Weston Jennings also believes he is the only one of his kind. He fears his powers as a dreamshifter, and resists learning to control them. After suffering a tragic loss, Weston heads deep into the woods of the Pacific Northwest to embrace a safe life of solitude. But when a terrible mistake leads to an innocent’s death, his guilt drives him to his former home, where he encounters what he never thought he would find: another shifter.

Now Vivian and Weston must work together to defeat a new threat to the dreamworld.

"Rising star Schafer continues to advance an elaborate mythology that places her heroine at the intersection of worlds. Schafer proves densely plotted and emotionally charged storytelling is definitely her forte!" – RT Magazine

Wakeworld is a fine adventure. Kerry Schafer gives us heroes we can root for and a world that twists and turns like an Escher print so that nothing is quite what it seems.” – Anne Bishop, author

“Schafer brings a unique voice to urban fantasy, and her writing has a dreamlike, magical quality. A captivating read, a real page-turner!” – Yasmine Galenorn, author

A message from Kerry about The Nothing...

A Chance to be Part of the Story…

An unfinished series is a very sad thing. As a reader I am devastated when I finish a book and there isn't another one and the story hasn't yet ended. It reminds me of the time I bought a book and for some reason the last page was missing. There I sat, holding that book in my hands and screaming inside, "But I don't know what happened!!!"

When I started writing a trilogy I made a promise to my readers that I would finish what I started. And I intend to do that. Ace Books has opted not to pick up The Nothing so I'm going to publish it independently. However, I would like for the quality of the last book to be at the same level as the first two and good editors don't come cheap.

For all of these reasons, I'm running a Kickstarter to help give The Nothing a chance to find its way to more readers. If you would like to be part of this—either by backing the project or spreading the word—you can read all about it at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/574989945/the-nothing-is-comingdream-if-you-dare

Interview with Kerry Schafer, author of the Books of the Between and The Dream Wars Novellas- January 30, 2014

Please welcome Kerry Schafer to The Qwillery. Kerry's most recent novel, Wakeworld, was published on January 28, 2014 by Ace.

Interview with Kerry Schafer, author of the Books of the Between and The Dream Wars Novellas- January 30, 2014

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery. You've written 2 Between novels and 3 Dream Wars novellas. Has your writing process changed (or not) from when you wrote Between (Between 1) and now?

Kerry:  Yes, it has changed a lot. I used to be a complete and utter pantster, just letting the story and characters take me wherever they wished. I also had a tendency to write when I felt like it. This was fun, but involved extensive rewrites. Between, for example, contains almost nothing from the original version other than a few themes, Vivian, Zee, and a penguin. Since then I've become much more disciplined. I usually have daily word count goals, which is new to me since getting a contract. I also have a tentative (although highly flexible) outline before I start writing, and definite sign posts I watch out for along the way. I still do a lot of re-writing, but not so much as I used to. (Knock wood, and hope I haven't jinxed my current projects! Yes, I'm a little superstitious)

TQ:  What do you wish that you knew about book publishing when Between (Between 1) came out that you know now.

Kerry:  Everything! Seriously - I had precious little idea of anything related to either traditional publishing or self publishing, and no idea of what was involved in marketing or PR. It would have made the road a little smoother to have had foreknowledge, but I don't think it would have changed my decisions or significantly altered the course of history in regards to my writing career. It's been a fascinating roller coaster ride!

TQ:  Are the Dream Wars novellas and the Between novels related? What are the Dream Wars novellas about?

Kerry:  There is absolutely no relation between the two series, other than that both of them play around with dreams. The Dream Wars are set in the small town of Williamsville, and are built around the concept of a supernatural being called the Dream Merchant, who will design a dream for you at your request - at a price that will be determined after delivery. The cost to our heroine, Jesse Davison, is her soul. She's stuck serving as a dream runner, a job she doesn't mind too much until her old sweetheart Will is sucked in and a group of bad guys start bootlegging dreams. The novellas are only the beginning - I fell in love with this world, and especially with Jesse, so there will be more forthcoming

TQWakeworld (Between 2) was published earlier this week. Tell us something about Wakeworld that is not in the book description.
Kerry:  There are a lot more dragons, and the relationship between Zee and Vivian gets complicated by the fact that he is a born Dragon Slayer and she is part dragon. Also - Jared gets some payback for his many sins in Between.

TQ:  Which character in the Between series so far has surprised you the most?

Kerry:  Weston Jennings, actually. I had no idea that he was going to turn out to be so important to the plot, or have such a devastating history. He was a lot of fun to develop.

TQ:  What's next?

Kerry:  Between #3! And a novel set in the war of the Dream Wars books. I'm also finishing up a paranormal mystery called Dead Before Dying. The first chapter of that is up at Book Country and I'm working on revisions.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Kerry:  Thanks so much for having me!

Interview with Kerry Schafer, author of the Books of the Between and The Dream Wars Novellas- January 30, 2014

Interview with Kerry Schafer, author of the Books of the Between and The Dream Wars Novellas- January 30, 2014
What if you could order a custom dream? Any kind. Dark and twisted, sweet, sensual, or redemptive. For the right price, a dream runner will deliver one to your doorstep.

Jesse Davison skipped town the week she turned sixteen, with nothing but the clothes on her back and her father’s vintage Indian Scout motorbike. She swore never to return to the town where in one night of tragedy she lost everything she ever loved.

When news of her estranged mother’s death calls her home, she hopes for some time to sort out ten years of tangled emotions. But Jesse’s job doesn’t exactly allow personal days. She’s been forced into service as a runner by the Dream Merchant to pay back a debt for her own dream of revenge, and there are always orders to fill.

Struggling to figure out her mysterious inheritance is more than enough to get a girl down, and things get even worse when the man Jesse loathes—ex-boyfriend Will Alderson—shows up. But she soon discovers the person she’s been running from might just be the one she should be running towards. Too bad she’s been dreaming of killing him for the past ten years.

The Dream Thief
The Dream Wars 2
TKA Distribution, October 27, 2013
eBook, 90 pages

Interview with Kerry Schafer, author of the Books of the Between and The Dream Wars Novellas- January 30, 2014
The underground dream trade is growing hotter by the second, and the Dream Merchant’s top delivery girl Jesse Davison wants out. She knows the ugly truth—that playing around with dreams can drive you crazy, or worse.

But it turns out freeing herself from the Dream Merchant isn’t Jesse’s biggest worry, and neither is the fact that her feelings for ex-boyfriend Will are resurfacing with a vengeance. Strange things begin happening as she investigates the circumstances surrounding her mother’s death in the sleepy mill town of Williamsville. Will’s father remembers her in an instant, despite his severe dementia. Her realtor Tom disappears into thin air, and his assistant claims to have killed him. It’s up to Jesse to get to the bottom of it all. And, unfortunately, working with Will seems to be the only way.

As the crimes begin to mount, Jesse realizes that Will’s memories, too, have been stolen, and it’s only a matter of time before the thief comes for her.

The Dream Wars
The Dream Wars 3
TKA Distribution, October 27, 2013

Interview with Kerry Schafer, author of the Books of the Between and The Dream Wars Novellas- January 30, 2014
Ever since Jesse Davison returned to her hometown, life has progressively gotten worse. The more she delves into her mother’s death, the deeper the mystery gets. Her lover, Will, the only person she can trust, has been pressed into service by the Dream Merchant as a Collector—a soul sucking job Jesse didn’t even know existed. And it turns out the dream bootleggers who have been operating out of her barn aren’t just manufacturing dreams and stealing memories – they’ve found a way to control people’s minds. Marsh, a childhood bully-turned realtor, is convinced he killed his boss. And now he’s consumed by the desire to make Jesse his next victim.

Somehow, Jesse must find a way to free Will and put a halt to the bootleggers’ scheme. Because the way things are going? This dream business is about to explode into a full scale war…

The View from Monday - January 27, 2014

Happy last Monday in January! The first month of the year has flown by it seems. I recently finished reading Hive Monkey (Ack-Ack Macaque 2) by Gareth L. Powell and Shovel Ready (Spademan 1) by Adam Sternbergh. Both novels were terrific.  I'm presently reading Breach Zone (Shadow Ops 3) by Myke Cole. You can expect a review on the 29th.

In other news: Since The Qwillery has over 700,000 pageviews (711,733 as of this morning), I'm planning a 7 book giveaway or something like that. I'm trying to decide whether it should be multi-genre or just one genre. I'll keep you posted!

Anthony Ryan
Tower Lord
Raven's Shadow 2
Ace, July 1, 2014
Hardcover and eBook, 624 pages

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors in 2014? - Part 8
In Blood Song, Anthony Ryan introduced readers to “a fascinating world of conflicting religions and the wars fought in the name of those faiths” (Library Journal). Now Ryan’s epic tale continues as Vaelin Al Sorna discovers that there is no escape from the call of destiny…

“The blood-song rose with an unexpected tune, a warm hum mingling recognition with an impression of safety. He had a sense it was welcoming him home.”

Vaelin Al Sorna, warrior of the Sixth Order, called Darkblade, called Hope Killer. The greatest warrior of his day, and witness to the greatest defeat of his nation: King Janus’s vision of a Greater Unified Realm drowned in the blood of brave men fighting for a cause Vaelin alone knows was forged from a lie. Sick at heart, he comes home, determined to kill no more. Named Tower Lord of the Northern Reaches by King Janus’s grateful heir, he can perhaps find peace in a colder, more remote land far from the intrigues of a troubled Realm.

But those gifted with the blood-song are never destined to live a quiet life. Many died in King Janus’s wars, but many survived, and Vaelin is a target, not just for those seeking revenge but for those who know what he can do. The Faith has been sundered, and many have no doubt who their leader should be. The new King is weak, but his sister is strong. The blood-song is powerful, rich in warning and guidance in times of trouble, but is only a fraction of the power available to others who understand more of its mysteries. Something moves against the Realm, something that commands mighty forces, and Vaelin will find to his great regret that when faced with annihilation, even the most reluctant hand must eventually draw a sword.

Interview with Kerry Schafer, author of Between - February 4, 2013

Please welcome Kerry Schafer to The Qwillery as part of the 2013 Debut Author Challenge Interviews and as part of the Between Blog Tour!

Interview with Kerry Schafer, author of Between - February 4, 2013

TQ:  Welcome to The Qwillery.

Kerry:  Thank you for having me! I am so thrilled that Between is part of the 2013 Debut Author Challenge!

TQ:  When and why did you start writing?

Kerry:  I fell in love with words when I was just a little kid, and the only real thing to be done about that was to write. I started with writing poetry in about sixth grade. Fiction came years later.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Kerry:  Quirks? Me? Yeah, I have a few. For one thing, I half believe that the story exists fully formed on some plane outside of myself and it's my job to capture it and get it on paper. I definitely believe that the story knows things I don't know, and that interesting things happen if I allow it to show me.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Kerry:  I am an avid pantser at heart. When I let the story have its way, it leads me to things I never would have dreamed up by myself. For example, in an early draft of Between a key showed up in Vivian's pocket. She had no idea what it was for, and neither did I. But that key grew into an integral part of the plot. On the other hand, I've learned to make some concessions to plotting. Lining up a few key scenes keeps the pacing on track. But even if I've got a complete outline, I have a tendency to stray.

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Kerry:  Doing it. Seriously. Sitting down and actually putting the words on the page, one after the other. Some days the words flow and it's all easy, but writing can be more like trying to pull teeth with eyebrow tweezers. Also, I work full time and have a lot of demands on my time. It would be easier if I never got tired and didn't need to sleep.

TQ:  Describe Between in 140 characters or less.

Kerry:  Ouch. Okay, here goes: When dangerous creatures from dream spill into the waking world, Vivian risks the Between - where reality and dream intersect - to stop them.

TQ:  What inspired you to write Between?

Kerry:  I've always had a fascination with what I think of as "The Other" – whatever is out there that is beyond the reach of our concrete senses. Take that, add a job where reality is often tenuous, throw in a brilliant co-worker with a fondness for Escher, and finally add a random penguin. Voila! In my brain it all adds up to Between.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for Between?

Kerry:  I had to do some medical research. I used to be a nurse a long time ago, and my mental health crisis job took me into the ER a lot, but I was shaky on some details. What sort of medical treatment would the victim of dragon poisoning receive? What about the victim of dream induced hypothermia? But hey, for the most part, Between is fantasy! I get to make stuff up.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? The hardest and why?

Kerry:  Isobel, Vivian's mentally unstable mother, was actually the easiest character to write. I'm not sure why – she just presented herself to me as fully formed and I didn't have to tinker with her much at all. The hardest would have to be Zee. Initially, I loosely based Zee on a real life character, the aforementioned brilliant co-worker, Jamie, who gave me the idea for the book. I learned, to my great chagrin, that even a fascinating human being doesn't translate well to the page. The initial Zee came across as flat and wooden. Then, when I was in the process of completely redesigning him, Jamie died. One of the most brutally difficult things I have ever done in my writing was to eliminate him from the pages of Between while I was still grieving his real life death.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Between?

Kerry:  I am fond of the initial ER scene where it becomes clear to Vivian that the Dreamworld is real and spilling into reality. If I told you any more I'd have to swear you to secrecy on pain of death and then where would this interview be?

TQ:  What's next?

Kerry:  Well, the second of the Books of the Between – tentatively titled Wakeworld – is currently with my editor. Hopefully Ace will want to contract for the third book of the trilogy, but that's still up in the air. Other than that, I've got a half written geriatric vampire clamoring for attention, a YA Fantasy in need of revision, and a ton of other book ideas. I plan to be busy.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

2013 Debut Author Challenge - January 2013 Debuts
Nevada, 1869: Beyond the pitiless 40-Mile Desert lies Golgotha, a cattle town that hides more than its share of unnatural secrets. The sheriff bears the mark of the noose around his neck; some say he is a dead man whose time has not yet come. His half-human deputy is kin to coyotes. The mayor guards a hoard of mythical treasures. A banker’s wife belongs to a secret order of assassins. And a shady saloon owner, whose fingers are in everyone’s business, may know more about the town’s true origins than he’s letting on.

A haven for the blessed and the damned, Golgotha has known many strange events, but nothing like the primordial darkness stirring in the abandoned silver mine overlooking the town. Bleeding midnight, an ancient evil is spilling into the world, and unless the sheriff and his posse can saddle up in time, Golgotha will have seen its last dawn…and so will all of Creation.

Not since A. S. Byatt’s Possession has there been a novel so perfectly attuned to readers who love the history and mythology of the British Isles.

A dramatic find at Stonehenge and another, quieter discovery in the Bodleian Library set in motion a riveting scholarly detective story and a romance, unfolding across a rich historical landscape evoked by the secret places and half-forgotten legends of the British countryside.

Archaeologist Donald Gladstone knows there is no solid evidence that King Arthur ever existed. And yet medieval tales of this legendary warrior must have found their inspiration somewhere, and Donald is determined to discover their true source. A chance encounter with the beguiling Julia Llewellyn, a gifted linguist working at the Oxford English Dictionary, sets them both on the trail of elusive clues embedded in an old Welsh battle poem. Their quest will intersect in unforeseen ways with their own troubled lives and will lead them at last to a deeper understanding of the origins of Arthur.

Centuries after the ecological collapse of Earth, humanity has spread among the stars. Under the governance of the League, our endless need for resources has driven us to colonize hundreds of planets, all of them devoid of other sentient life. Humanity is apparently alone in the universe.

Then comes the sudden, brutal decimation of Kassa, a small farming planet, by a mysterious attacker. The few survivors send out a desperate plea for aid, which is answered by two unlikely rescuers. Prudence Falling is the young captain of a tramp freighter. She and her ragtag crew have been on the run and living job to job for years, eking out a living by making cargo runs that aren’t always entirely legal. Lt. Kyle Daspar is a police officer from the wealthy planet of Altair Prime, working undercover as a double agent against the League. He’s been undercover so long he can't be trusted by anyone—even himself.

While flying rescue missions to extract survivors from the surface of devastated Kassa, they discover what could be the most important artifact in the history of man: an alien spaceship, crashed and abandoned during the attack.

But something tells them there is more to the story. Together, they discover the cruel truth about the destruction of Kassa, and that an imminent alien invasion is the least of humanity’s concerns.

Kerry Schafer's BETWEEN Dream Tour: DAY 4
Vivian's life is finally on track. She has a job she loves as an ER doctor and has just met - literally - the man of her dreams. But when her eccentric grandfather is murdered and designates her as his next of kin, she discovers that she is the last of a race of beings known as dreamshifters. It is her task to guard the doorways between waking and dreaming, which have already begun to unravel, spilling dangerous creatures from dream into the waking world. When she sets out to close the open doors and protect her town and the people she loves, Vivian confronts dragons, intrigue, and the dark secrets of her own family history. In the end she comes face to face with a sorceress seeking eternal life and ultimate power. Vivian must find a way to stop her, or reality will be forever altered.

The theme for Day Four of the BETWEEN Dream Tour is penguins. Vivian was given a penguin pendant by her grandfather to wear around her neck as protection. Dream imagery wisdom say that seeing a penguin in your dream shows that your problems might not be as serious as you think. Have any of your dreams ever given you some relief about a situation you thought was bigger than it actually was?
