Question:   Who is your ideal paranormal hero?

Amber Hughes who said...

One of my favorite paranormal heroes is "Zsadist" from J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. His past is so tragic, but when he meets his mate, the healing finally begins. He'll never be perfect, but comes along way in recovering from such a tortured/tragic past.

This was a great post! Thanks very much for the giveaway! Lisa's books are definitely my kind of read :-)

Question:  If you are immortal, when were you created or born?

MamaKitty who said...

How funny - when I'm writing, I tend to go over a scene like a movie clip in my mind as well. I didn't think I was the only person that did that, but it always makes me laugh a little bit when someone else admits it. I don't know why. Maybe because I'm not the only crazy one? :)

If I were an immortal, I think I would have been born back in ancient Egypt. I've always been utterly fascinated with that time period - far more than I probably should be.

Guest Blog by Lisa Renee Jones - Creating a paranormal hero

Please welcome the fabulous Lisa Renee Jones to The Qwillery!  Lisa is the author of many novels. The latest in her Zodius series is The Danger That Is Damion, which was published on May 1, 2012.

Creating a paranormal hero

Creating a hero is one of the most important things we do as authors. Our hero has to do more than ‘look’ like a hero. They have to act like one. Their actions have to back up their character in a way that leads readers to define our hero and make him worthy of his title. How the writer takes the internal and external events that occur in the story to make this happen is critical to having readers relate, and/or empathize, with the character. The way this connection is executed is critical and its important to understand how the genre impacts that execution.

So how do you create a paranormal hero?

The Paranormal hero and the conflicts in the story:

--Usually the hero is saving the world from some horrible Apocalyptic terror. That makes him pretty darn likable right there.

--He can shoot anything between the eyes and not miss. He’s a hero so, of course, he would only actually shoot the bad guys. He has some destiny that, no matter his present state of mind, says he’s special. His journey to accept/become that destiny is critical to who he is as a character.

--There will be a lot of external conflict in most paranormal stories. Stories might include demons, monsters, or just bad people/beings who are after something that will be horrific for the world. There’s a ticking clock, and the good guys need to beat the clock to keep the bad guys from winning. Another common thread is that the heroine is forbidden to the hero, monsters are trying to kill her and he must save her.

In the ‘save the world and woman’ scenarios there is a lot of fighting, running, searching, and so on. This is where the hero can get lost. However, his mighty weapons, his yummy body, or even his bedroom skills, cannot be all that makes him a hero. When there is a lot of external conflict it’s easy to forget the emotional conflict. Who is he? Who was he as a child? Who does he want to be? How do these things impact everything he says, does, desires, despises, and loves? In a romance, how do these things make the story and the love that is created between the two main characters stronger?

Think deep on this.

For instance, if the hero is suddenly a vampire, then he needs blood. He must find a way to get that blood. Why does this impact him emotionally or why does it not? How does it impact his ability to love and trust, as well as his choices in life and this story? Does the hero hate blood? Did he witness a horrible wreck and lose someone and the blood brings back those memories? He needs to have baggage because we all have baggage. That baggage doesn’t define us but how we handle it does.

Don’t let the paranormal world-building and action make you forget the character of the hero. The story is a romance or a horror story or a suspense. Think about the internal motivations of the character. If those motivations are clear then the hero can even tread on territory that isn’t always considered hero-like and we will forgive him because we see where he is coming from and what drives him. In a romance, there are two primary characters. Think about their internal conflicts together, not just the external ones, that bring them together or tear them apart. External conflict matters but internal conflict and growth has to be occur along with external actions.

How does the external conflict in a scene develop/change the internal conflict?

In ‘The Danger that is Damion’ (Zodius Series Sourcebooks Casablanca May 2012), Damion comes from a wealthy family, but his brother was killed in a car accident when Damion was driving the car. His brother begged him to take him to see his girlfriend because she was leaving for vacation and though his brother was grounded, Damion agreed. That’s when it happened. His parents blame him and he relives the moment when his mother attacked him and started hitting him in the hospital, screaming that Damion was to blame. He found the Army and he’s Mr. America. Rules, rules, rules. Even with all that has happened to create the super soldiers in this series, he believes in honor and rules, and he refuses to deviate from that. Until saving a woman makes him change the rules and break the rules. Of course, there is a threat to the world and the heroine is a part of that threat. He has to go against the obvious, the appearance that she is one of the bad guys, and in the end they will save the day together. But even when he knows she is good, there will be choices he questions for fear that he will let her down, too.

So there you have tips to create a great paranormal hero! I hope you find them useful!

Question:  Do you have any favorite covers or ones that didn’t work for you and why?

Sara M who said...
I will admit, covers are a big part of my reading experience. The reviews I write on my blog are split into four categories: plot, pace, characters, and cover. Because these are the make or break factors of a book for me.

The one book that I've picked up solely for the cover: Wither by Lauren DeStefano (which I ended up really enjoying even though it's outside of my genre preferences).

And some of my favorite covers are ones that include a lot of relevant details to the plot: Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep and Tempest Rising by Nicole Peeler.

I have a definite preference for the North of Need cover. It is lovely and mysterious. I want to hold it and look closer at what is not clear and try to figure out what it means. The other cover is lovely, but if I was in a bookstore I would definitely pick up North of Need to see what it was about:) Thank you for taking the time to share with us today and for the awesome giveaway opportunity.

North of Need Trading Cards

donnas who said...

I really think both covers are awesome and Im not sure I can pick one between the two. As for importance in buying a book. The cover might make me pick it up and look at it, but unless it sounds good too I wont buy it based on cover alone.

Interview with Lisa Renee Jones and Giveaway - November 18, 2011

Please welcome Lisa Renee Jones to The Qwillery. Lisa's most recent Zodius novel, The Storm That is Sterling, was published on November 1, 2011 by Sourcebooks Casablanca.

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery!

Lisa:  Thank you so much. I really appreciate you having me.

TQ:  What inspired you to write the Zodius series?

Lisa:  A combination of things. I love Vegas which is the backdrop and I’ve always been fascinated by Area 51. My now deceased father-in-law was special forces as were his brothers. My ex was Army. Before my father-in-law passed he hinted at being at the rumored alien cleanup site. Actually he said he was there. He was sworn to secrecy and minus a few hints he took the truth to the grave. Even that, made me research the stories of people threatened and even mysteriously dying to keep secrets. It was easy for me to think that something like the Zodius project might be going on. And, of course, a hot Army hero is always fun to write about!

TQ:  Tell us about The Storm That is Sterling (Zodius 2)?

Lisa:  Sterling was a big part of The Legend of Michael so readers meet him in book one. He is a damaged hero with a lot of pain but he never gets bitter. He just lives a bit like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon, on the edge, ready to die. And he has a wicked sense of humor he hides behind.

TQ:  How do you choose your characters' names?

Lisa:  Sterling was a waiter at Carrabas in Austin, Texas, one of my favorite restaurants, but in general I play with names and think about how the character I’m developing fits the name. For some reason, a name just attaches to that character and feels right. I already told a lady at my gym I have to use her name though in the future. It’s Xia and I think that is cool and unique like Sterling.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in The Storm that is Sterling?

Lisa:  That is really hard because there are so many. I think probably a scene in a bar near the end of the book is my favorite because of a revelation and the emotional content.

TQ:  Which character has surprised you the most in the Zodius series so far?

Lisa:  The love interest for Caleb. I planned something for him and then this other character stepped forward and claimed him. You’ll be able to figure that out in The Danger That is Damion. I don’t want to say a name and give it away.

TQ:  In the Zodius series who has been the easiest character to write and why?

Lisa:  Sterling was pretty easy to write because I just ‘got’ him from the minute I invented him. He was alive on the pages and I love his humor that just pops out of my head because it feels like him.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Zodius Series?

Lisa:  I have 6 outlined and I have ideas for more.

TQ:  What's next?

Lisa:  Well in late November – as in this month – I have HOT VAMPIRE TOUCH which is book 3 of my indie Vampire Wardens series. Then on December 13th WICKED WEREWOLF NIGHT which is a connected story to the Wardens and you will meet the hero in TOUCH. I have lots going on next year including The Danger that is Damion in May, a new Blaze trilogy, a Spice Brief, more indies, and some things I hope to announce soon!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Lisa:  Thank you so much for having me!

Lisa:  My fiancé has influenced my writing for numerous reasons. He loves books. We met in Barnes and Noble. He believes in me even when I don't. He LOVES paranormal and he's a big ole comic geek. All his talk about comics and paranormal stuff often come to mind when I am writing and I've indulged, and ended up liking things, I never thought I would have before meeting him.

As for writers I love. There are so many for different reasons. Donna Grant, Cynthia Eden, Caridad Pineiro, and Jennifer Haymore are all part of Dangerowmenwriting.com with me and I adore each of them as people and as amazing writers.

Karen Moning is a Goddess to me. She can write third person Highlanders and UF in first person, and I love both equally. I love Patricia Briggs Mercy series. I love Gaelen Foley and her way with words. I love Linda Howard-- especially Mr. Perfect. That book is one of my favorites EVER. I could go on and on.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a panster?

Lisa:  I use to be a panster but I had an editor had HQ that wanted really detailed outlines in advance and it turned out, as much as I dreaded writing them, they helped me. I don't always stick to the plot I outline up front, but I come fairly close.

TQ:  What inspired you to write Michael?

Lisa:  The character himself came to me because I love hot alpha men and I think soldiers are so brave and true heroes. That makes them need, and deserve, love all the more.

TQ:  Why did you choose the name Michael for your male main character? and Cassandra for your female main character?

Lisa:  When I first start writing a story I play with name and roll them around. A character starts forming in my mind and names just come to me. Often there is nothing more to it than the name that feels like the character. But Michael was a little different. His name is the name of the Archangel Michael -- who protect and does battle -- who attends thinks necessary but not always pleasant. That embodied my character to me.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for Michael?

Lisa:  Lots of research of medical research in terms of DNA tampering, as well as, conspiracy theories of Area 51. Legend of Michael isn't sci-fi. There are no aliens or alien ships-- but if there was DNA recovered from so incident even decades ago -- what medical research and possibilities could evolve? I've been to Vegas MANY times, so the Vegas scenes that are highly prominent in book 2, were easy to write realistically.

TQ:  Describe Michael in 140 characters or less.

Lisa:  He ain't no Superman. He's Batman. Dark and lethally hot.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in the book?

Lisa:  When he follows her into the bathroom in the hotel not long after they are reunited, and its clear, despite all that has happened, the desire between them is still scorching hot.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Zodius Series?

Lisa:  I have three books contracted in the Zodius series. I have another 3 plotted.

TQ:  What's next?

Lisa

He is sin and satisfaction, lust and damnation, a lethal weapon created from greed. A human soldier injected with alien DNA, he is a legend. Untamable, he has walked on the dark side, and returned to the light. Women desire him, hungry for his raw passion. Men envy his power; they lust to control him. But there is no controlling a creature such as he, no taming the primal fires within him. Michael revels in his superior strength and trains as a fighting machine. But when he encounters scientist Cassandra Powell, he begins to long for a more human connection...

Texas Hotzone Series:

Jump Start
Texas Hotzone 1
(January 1, 2011)
Interview with Lisa Renee Jones and Giveaway - May 13, 2011
A battlefield moment of clarity leads Sergeant Bobby Evans back to the Texas town he fled long ago. His new mission—winning back the woman he wants, by any naughty means necessary.

Jennifer Jones spent seven years aching with the memory of Bobby's blistering kisses—and his sudden, silent departure. Now he's back, looking to pick up where they left off—naked and voracious. But Jen won't get burned again, no matter how hot Bobby turned out. Two torrid weeks, then she'll give him his marching orders…or not!

High Octane
Texas Hotzone 2
(March 1, 2011)
Interview with Lisa Renee Jones and Giveaway - May 13, 2011
Well-known newspaper journalist Sabrina Cameron has arrived in Austin, Texas, to reinvent herself. Besides a new job and new friends, what better cure for her control-freak tendencies than to skydive for the first time in her life?

Supersexy jumpmaster Ryan "Cowboy" Walker is just the wild man to push Sabrina to her limits—both of them know it on sight. The high-octane experiences that follow, meanwhile, have nothing to do with leaping from a plane. Talk about losing control!

But when Sabrina's suddenly forced to choose between new loyalties and old…it'll not only force her to choose who she's going to be…but who she's going to be with.

Breathless Descent
Texas Hotzone 3
(May 1, 2011)
Interview with Lisa Renee Jones and Giveaway - May 13, 2011
Ten years ago, an impulsive eighteen-year-old Shay White kissed Caleb Martin—her brother's best friend. The resulting chemistry was hot enough to send Caleb running. Now he's back…an ex-special forces operative getting his skydiving business off the ground. But Shay figures that all that sexual tension was a "forbidden fruit" sort of thing. A simple kiss should put that fantasy to rest, right?

Wrong. Instead, Shay and Caleb find themselves caught in a web of need and decide to finally do something about it…in the most exquisitely carnal way possible. Now Shay and Caleb are tumbling into a lust-fueled freefall—are they headed for a safe landing or the kind of crash that will change their lives forever?
