Spotlight - Ruins & Revenge by Lisa Shearin
An ancient power.
Beneath a mountain on an uninhabited continent is said to be a fabled city, a city occupied by an ancient goblin civilization founded for only one reason—to protect and defend the Heart of Nidaar, an artifact that can harness the forces of nature as a weapon.

An elite team of combat mages.
Chief mage and goblin duke Tamnais Nathrach must help the guardians keep the legendary power out of the hands of a malevolent goblin brotherhood and their otherworldly allies, whatever the cost. Together with his hand-picked team—which includes elf pirate (and team demolitions expert) Phaelan Benares—Tam descends into a vast subterranean world both wondrous and terrifying, a world laid with deadly traps and filled with apex predators from another age.

The countdown to the end of the world.
Some secrets are meant to stay buried. When the Heart of Nidaar is accidentally awakened, and aimed at the west coast of the Seven Kingdoms, Tam and his team are in a race against time to prevent the deaths of millions. To succeed, they must confront their deepest fears, unmask their darkest secrets, and reveal their shameful pasts, testing the bonds of friendship and beyond. To fail means death for them all—and the end of all life in the Seven Kingdoms.

And don't forget Treasure & Treason which is also told from the POV of Tamnais Nathrach.

Spotlight - Ruins & Revenge by Lisa Shearin
An ancient power.
Hidden for millennia in a legendary city on an uninhabited continent, the Heart of Nidaar can harness the forces of nature itself. In the wrong hands, the artifact is a weapon that can command the power of the earth and seas to destroy all life. Just the type of power a sinister goblin brotherhood finds irresistible. In their hands, kingdoms will be forced to surrender to their rule.

A team of royals and rogues.
Chief mage (and nearly rehabilitated practitioner of black magic) Tamnais Nathrach is the perfect goblin duke to stop them. Along with elf pirate Phaelan Benares, these two have a roguish plan to sail to Aquas and snatch the Heart of Nidaar before it can fall into the wrong hands. After all, stealing hearts is what these two do best. Who cares if goblins and elves have been in a near constant state of war for centuries? This common enemy is enough motivation for some teamwork and a little professional competition.

The adventure of a lifetime.
Perhaps Tamnais and Phaelan have forgotten one small fact. Expeditions that sail to the continent of Aquas never return. It’s a blighted wasteland filled with creatures from nightmare and Tamnais might have failed to mention that the Heart has guardians, an ancient race willing to use deadly force to keep themselves and the artifact hidden. Alliances are tested, courage is challenged, and nothing less than the future of all life in the Seven Kingdoms is at stake in the deadliest—and most competitive—treasure hunt of all time.

My name is Raine Benares. Until last week I was a seeker—a finder of things lost and people missing. Now I’m psychic roommates with the Saghred, an ancient stone with cataclysmic powers. Just me, the stone, and all the souls it’s ingested over the centuries. Crowded doesn’t even begin to describe it. All I want is my life back—which means getting rid of the stone and the power it possesses. To sort things out, I head for the Isle of Mid, home to the most prestigious sorcery school, as well as the Conclave, the governing body for all magic users. It’s also home to power- grubbing mages who want me dead and goblins who see me as a thief. As if that’s not enough, Mid’s best student spellsingers are disappearing left and right, and I’m expected to find them. Lives are at stake, goblins are threatening to sue, mages are getting greedier, and the stone’s power is getting stronger by the hour. This could get ugly.

My name is Raine Benares—and it sucks to be me right now.

I’m a seeker who found the Saghred, a soul-stealing stone that gave me unlimited powers I never wanted. Now I’ve lost the rock—and the magic it gave me—to a goblin dark mage whose main goals are my death and world domination. This is more than incentive enough for a little trip to the goblin capital of Regor with a small band of good friends, not-so-good friends, and one outright enemy. Don’t ask.

All we need to do is destroy the Saghred, kill the mage, and put a renegade goblin prince on the throne. Did I mention I’ll be doing that with no magic?

A Raine Benares Novella
NLA Digital LLC, November 25, 2014
eBook, 83 pages

My name is Raine Benares. I'm a seeker, a finder of things lost and people missing. I've never had to do both in one day, or had this many lives at stake--including mine.

The search for a missing ring leads me to the abduction of eight magically gifted children. Their souls were stolen while they slept, and unless I find those souls by sunrise, their bodies will die.

Both cases have one thing in common--they're linked to a goblin secret society high-stakes poker game, whose members are practitioners of the blackest of black magic. As a seeker, I can track those captured children's souls, but to spring them will take magic I haven't got.

That's where Tamnais Nathrach comes in. He's the seductive embodiment of sin itself. He's also a goblin dark mage with an even darker past, the owner of the city's most notorious casino--and the only person with magic enough to reach the kids in time.

Why are the most dangerous predators the most beautiful?

The stakes are high; the odds of success are low. And I'm betting with my life--a life I'll have to trust to a darkly tempting goblin mage I just met.

I’ve successfully destroyed the Saghred (AKA, a legendary soul-sucking rock).I’ve sent an evil goblin demigod to the Lower Hells.I’m coming to terms with my burgeoning new powers. I’m marrying super sexy paladin Mychael Eiliesor. You’d think I could handle a wedding and meeting my soon-to-be mother-in-law without another calamity brewing. You’d be wrong!

The new, thankfully non-psychotic, Goblin King is willing to come to the table to discuss a peace treaty. The Isle of Mid is the site of these delicate negotiations, meaning all hands on deck for Mychael and his Conclave Guardians. When the head of elven intelligence (and my wedding guest) Duke Markus Sevelien is nearly assassinated upon his arrival, I suspect my mother-in-law will be the least of my concerns. Sabotaging the peace talks is the first salvo in a treacherous and deadly new apocalyptic plot.

Mychael and I might not make it to the altar after all!

Melanie's Week in Review - December 7, 2014

Melanie's Week in Review - December 7, 2014

I can't believe that it is already December and everyone has started the countdown to Christmas. I have spent the week hoping to have read loads of books but I have only managed to finish 2. So what did I read?

Melanie's Week in Review - December 7, 2014
I started the week with Richard Parks' To Break the Demon Gate which features the disgraced Lord Yamada. I got this book from NetGalley a few weeks ago but only just found the time to read it. I wasn't completely clear when the story was set but I am guessing the late 1800s to early 1900's. It was steeped full of mystery, intrigue and haiku. Yamada uses his knowledge of supernatural to keep a promise, a promise to a princess. With little but his honour to protect him Yamada embarks on a mission to save the future emperor and to keep a promise to a former love. If you read this book description you would expect non stop monster and ghost battles but this is not the case. In fact the story is quite slowl moving. However, there is a beauty in this story and it comes from the haiku poetry sent and received by Yamada. I am not the biggest fan of poetry or haiku but it was definitely the highlight of the book. This isn't a book for someone who likes a lot of action. The story seems slow but gently flows along and finally just ends but with quite a big twist. A gentle book for an over taxed mind.

Melanie's Week in Review - December 7, 2014I found a posting by Ilona Andrews that they had released a short story in the anthology Night Shift. I immediately went and pre-ordered the book and it didn't take too long for it to arrive on my Kindle. For those of you who know my reading likes and dis-likes you will know I am not the biggest fan of short stories but I do make the exception for my favourite authors. I know that Nalini Singh is very popular but her contribution to this anthology did not gel with me. In fact I didn't finish it. I did however, enjoy Andrews contribution set in the Kate Daniels world with a story of Jim and Dali. This short had almost my every favourite element  - Dali - plain, not athletic but intelligent. Jim is everything Dali isn't but he loves her anyway. They are caught up solving the mystery of why a group of shop owners have been cursed while at the same time starting to realise what they mean to each other. A solid continuation of the Kate Daniels series.

Contribution 3 was from Lisa Shearin and story of a small town girl in the big city of New York fighting crime in a supernatural police force. This story was OK. I didn't mind the characters and thought the plot was OK. Leprechauns on a stag do didn't sound like an exciting plot but in the end it was pretty action packed. I would consider reading more from this author. The final tale in this anthology was from Milla Vane and was surprisingly high fantasy. This story was so unlike the others but again, another author I would like to read more of. Overall, I found this anthology quite disjointed. There didn't seem to be an over-arching theme or if there was one it wasn't obvious. Had Ilona Andrews not been involved I don't think I would have bought this book

For those of you who have read my WIR before you will know I have been following 2 weekly serials. I have to say I have been quite discouraged of late. One of the authors hasn't posted since early October and despite large breaks the other has been more regular. Its rather disappointing as both authors have great stories to tell but for whatever reasons aren't able to keep to a regular schedule.

That is it for me this week. Qwill has given me the heads up on the next Karina Cooper book is available on NetGalley so hopefully I will have  chance to tell you about it next week. Until then Happy Reading!

Interview with Lisa Shearin, author of The Grendel Affair and more - January 6, 2014

Please welcome Lisa Shearin to The Qwillery. Lisa is the author of The Raine Benares series and the new SPI Files. The Grendel Affair (SPI Files 1) was published on December 31, 2013.

Interview with Lisa Shearin, author of The Grendel Affair and more - January 6, 2014

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery. You've written 6 novels in your Raine Benares series and now the first novel (at least) in the SPI Files. What is the most challenging thing for you about writing? Has your writing process changed over the years?

Lisa:  For me, the most challenging—and also the most rewarding—part of writing a book is the first draft. It’s challenging because I’m part plotter/part pantster. I tend to have the beginning, the ending, and a few scenes scattered through the space in between. That leaves a LOT of empty space to fill. It’s not filling the space that’s necessarily the challenge; it’s doing it on a tight deadline. Unlike many writers, I prefer the rewriting/editing part of the writing process—the part that comes after getting the first draft (aka “the story”) down. That’s when I can start to play and have fun, because at that point, I’ve got something to work with.

TQ:  Tell us something about The Grendel Affair (SPI Files 1) that is not in the book description.

Lisa:  How about why supernatural beings came to our world/dimension in the first place? They want the same things as the rest of us: a good job, nice house, 2.5 kids/spawn, and a dog. The others? Well, their powers are stronger here, their greed is bigger, and any treaties or bindings that might have made them behave back home don’t mean squat here. They don’t just want their slice of the American Dream; they want the whole freaking pie, and they don’t care what they have to do, who they have to kill, or how many city blocks they have to level to get what they want.

That’s why we’re here.

Someone has to even the odds.

We’re Supernatural Protection & Investigations.

TQ:  What inspired you to write The Grendel Affair?

Lisa:  I love movies like Men in Black, Big Trouble in Little China, and Ghostbusters. Nothing’s more fun to me than watching or reading about the chaos—and comedy—that ensues when people are faced with the reality that the creatures and things they didn’t believe existed are all too real. They’re sitting next to you on the subway, they’re driving the cab you just got into, and you found out this morning that your boss really is a troll. The story possibilities are endless—and so much fun.

TQ:  Does the SPI Files series have anything in common with your Raine Benares series?

Lisa:  Over the years, I’ve found I have a tendency toward quirky ensemble casts. I’m not a main character and that’s it kind of writer. Facing down beasties that go bump in the night (or goblin mages bent on world domination) is a lot less scary when you know your heavily and creatively armed friends have your back.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for The Grendel Affair?

Lisa:  I did quite a bit of research on the tunnel systems that run under New York City—sewer, subway, electrical, water, and especially those that have been abandoned. Before 9/11, there were tours of underground New York. I would so have loved to have taken a tour of the tunnels, and am completely bummed that they’re not offered anymore . I also researched Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. I drove past it on my way from LaGuardia into the city for a meeting with my publisher this past spring. I’d really like to take a tour when I’m in New York with more time. Then of course, there was the Beowulf/Grendel research. I fell in love with the idea of “what if?” in terms of Grendel being turned loose in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

TQ:  Why did you set the SPI Files in New York?

Lisa:  Since SPI is a worldwide organization, it seemed natural for me to put their global headquarters in New York. And if supernatural creatures wanted to be among humans, but concealed in the crowds, New York was the perfect choice. And I just love New York. : )

TQ:  What's next?

Lisa:  I’m presently writing the second book in the SPI Files – The Dragon Conspiracy. After that I plan to write an e-book novella set in Raine’s world. A lot of my fans have told me that they miss Tam. I miss Tam, too. Something that was hinted at in Magic Lost, Trouble Found, but not explored was how exactly did Raine and Tam meet, and what happened when they did? You’re the first one I’ve told about this project. ; ) The plan is to have it ready to go this year, but first I have to finish writing The Dragon Conspiracy.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Lisa:  Thank you so much for inviting me; it’s always fun!

Interview with Lisa Shearin, author of The Grendel Affair and more - January 6, 2014
We’re Supernatural Protection & Investigations, known as SPI. Things that go bump in the night, the monsters you thought didn’t exist? We battle them and keep you safe. But some supernatural baddies are just too big to contain, even for us…

When I moved to New York to become a world famous journalist, I never imagined that snagging a job at a seedy tabloid would change my career path from trashy reporter to undercover agent. I’m Makenna Fraser, a Seer for SPI. I can see through any disguise, shield, or spell that a paranormal pest can come up with. I track down creatures and my partner, Ian Byrne, takes them out.

Our cases are generally pretty routine, but a sickle-wielding serial killer has been prowling the city’s subway tunnels. And the murderer’s not human. The fiend in question, a descendant of Grendel—yes, that Grendel—shares his ancestor’s hatred of parties, revelry, and drunkards. And with New Year’s Eve in Times Square only two days away, we need to bag him quickly. Because if we don’t find him—and the organization behind him—by midnight, our secret’s out and everyone’s time is up.

About Lisa

Guest Blog by Lisa Shearin - Unexpected characters can put the magic in your story

Please welcome Lisa Shearin to The Qwillery.  All Spell Breaks Loose, the 6th and final Raine Benares novel, will be published by Ace on May 29, 2012.

Unexpected characters can put the magic in your story.

One of the best things about writing is when my characters surprise me or the story suddenly goes off in a completely unexpected direction—or best of all, both at the same time.

That’s when the magic happens.

Writers usually fall into one of two categories: plotter or pantster. Hard-core plotters know exactly what happens from A to Z. Others are happy with just a loose sketch. Pantsters throw plot and caution to the wind and just dive in. I used to be the former, and have gradually evolved into the later.

But sometimes for the good of the book, you have to toss any plots or plans you may have right out the window.

Say you’re happily writing along, everything going according to plan. Character A is behaving perfectly. Then Character B—or even a character you’ve never met before—suddenly enters the scene. Everything changes. It’s become my experience that this can be a very good thing. It means that your characters and your story are taking on even more of a life of their own. Whenever this happens to me, I’ve learned to run, don’t walk, after the interfering Character B or the newbie. Those characters know perfectly well what they’re doing and why they’re there even if you don’t. The key is to go with the flow.

Some of my favorite characters have come into existence by crashing my plot party. In a book, party crashers are always welcome. For me, they’re either being pulled into a dark alley, or pushed out of a bar. I’ve learned to pay attention to these people. They’re worth watching—and listening to.

In the Raine Benares series, two of my most notable examples are Piaras Rivalin and Talon Nathrach.

Piaras was supposed to be a “fetch & carry” character, one who would put in only a brief appearance at his grandmother Tarsilia Rivalin’s apothecary shop in MAGIC LOST, TROUBLE FOUND. Everything was going along just fine until a few chapters later when Raine sees Piaras being yanked into a dark alley by the henchmen of a goblin prince. Neither Raine nor I saw that one coming. So Raine followed Piaras, and I followed Raine.

Then in ARMED & MAGICAL, a young goblin nightclub singer/dancer is kidnapped by Khrynsani temple guards. I had no clue who this kid was. Turned out he was the son of one of my major characters, Tam Nathrach. Though now I know Talon very well, and I’m not in the least bit surprised that his character would stage such a dramatic entrance. In ALL SPELL BREAKS LOOSE, Tam’s mom perfectly describes her grandson: “impulsive, stubborn, arrogant, and believes himself irresistible to women and impervious to death.” Yep, that’s my Talon.

Some of my best characters have been my least expected—and my most magical.

Guest Blog by Lisa Shearin - Unexpected characters can put the magic in your story

Guest Blog by Lisa Shearin - Unexpected characters can put the magic in your story
