The View From Monday - April 28, 2014

Happy last Monday in April. Last week I read a terrific fantasy novel that is out much later in the year so I am not going to talk about it yet. I'm presently reading an SF The Forever Watch by David Ramirez, a debut that came out last week.  The next book on my list is a ZPoc caused by a virus (or that's what I think it is based on the description). I'll follow that with a thriller or maybe some steampunk.

My favorite movie hero. That's a tough one. It's hard to argue with such characters as Indiana Jones or James Bond. But I think I'm going to have to agree with Barbara E. and pick Captain Malcolm Reynolds. He's a flawed man who tries very much to do the right thing. Even when including the TV series, he never really got the girl. He was unable to express his feelings to Inara and so lost her. At the same time, he was a great leader, often getting his crew out of trouble. What's not to love?

Interview with Lisa Kessler & Giveaway - August 12, 2011

Please welcome Lisa Kessler to The Qwillery as part of the 2011 Debut Author Challenge Interviews. Lisa's debut, Night Walker (Night 1), was published on August 2, 2011  by Entangled Publishing.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Lisa:  I like to chew sugarless gum while I write... Usually Trident Bubble gum flavor! By the time I'm deep into a book my desk is drowning in gum wrappers! LOL

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Lisa:  Some of my favorites are: Stephen King, Anne Rice, Kelley Armstrong, Ray Bradbury, Dean Koontz, Jeri Smith-Ready, Jackie Kessler, the list goes on... LOL

Anne Rice definitely influenced me because she made me want to write vampires. And Ray Bradbury impacted my craft by challenging me to write a new short story every week for a year. I achieved that goal and my writing is much stronger! So glad I did it. :)

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Lisa:  Panster.

TQ:  Describe Night Walker in 140 characters or less.

Lisa:  He gave up his soul for a second chance to love her...

TQ:  What inspired you to write Night Walker?

Lisa:  I wanted to write a vampire romance, but I wanted the vampires to be different and from the Americas instead of Europe. I started researching and came up with shape shifting Night Walkers.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for Night Walker?

Lisa:  I did some research online, but because Night Walker is set in San Diego, I was able to go to the Mission de Alcala lots of times to walk around and take photos. I also interviewed some of the Kumeyaay historians from the local tribes here. I really enjoyed researching!

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Lisa:  Calisto was the easiest for me to write. I think I understood him and his motivations best from the very start of the book, so it was always easy when I was in his point of view. I think Betty was the toughest for me to write, because she's a tough as nails business woman and basically the opposite of me. I had to keep rewriting her tougher and colder each time I edited.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in the novel?

Lisa:  Tough not to give too much away... My favorite scene is when Calisto is forced to try to drive Kate's stick-shift car! I don't want to give too much away, but to see an all-powerful immortal stall a car definitely made him more human to me... :)

I love the scene at the middle of the book when Calisto plays Mozart for Kate. I can see the scene in my head, I can hear the song, and to me the scene is magic! LOL

TQ:  Who should play Calisto Terana and Kate Bradley if Night Walker is made into a movie?

Lisa:  Calisto would be younger Antonio Banderas from Mask of Zorro. (Remember that dance scene with Catherine Zeta-Jones??? Shew!) And Kate probably be someone like Katie Holmes.

TQ:  How many books are planned for The Night series?

Lisa:  There are 3 novels and 1 novella planned at this point.

TQ:  What's next?

Lisa:  In December the second book in the series, Night Demon, will be released, followed by the novella, Night Thief in January. I'm going to be very busy! LOL

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Lisa:  Thanks so much for having me! It's been really fun!

Once again it is Monday. It's a light week for new releases. This is not necessarily a bad thing. There were so many releases last week, I need a week to catch up. While there might not be many books being released it's still a busy week at The Qwillery.

There are 4 interviews this week Patricia Eimer (August 9th), Kat Richardson (August 10th), Courtney Schafer (August 11th), and Lisa Kessler (August 12th). Patricia (Luck of the Devil), Courtney (The Whitefire Crossing), and Lisa (Night Walker) are debut authors!  Kat Richardson is the author of the Greywalker series, one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series. Ready Player One
Author:  Ernest Cline
Format:  Hardcover, 384 pages
Publisher:  Crown (August 16, 2011)
Price:  $24.00
Language:  English
Genre:  Science Fiction
ISBN:  978-0-307-88743-6

2011 Debut Author Challenge - August Debut Authors
At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.

And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.

And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.

Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

Recent World War II veteran Bull Ingram is working as muscle when a Memphis DJ hires him to find Ramblin' John Hastur. The mysterious blues man's dark, driving music--broadcast at ever-shifting frequencies by a phantom radio station--is said to make living men insane and dead men rise.

Disturbed and enraged by the bootleg recording the DJ plays for him, Ingram follows Hastur's trail into the strange, uncivilized backwoods of Arkansas, where he hears rumors the musician has sold his soul to the Devil.

But as Ingram closes in on Hastur and those who have crossed his path, he'll learn there are forces much more malevolent than the Devil and reckonings more painful than Hell . . .

In a masterful debut of Lovecraftian horror and Southern gothic menace, John Hornor Jacobs reveals the fragility of free will, the dangerous power of sacrifice, and the insidious strength of blood.

A vacation in the Bahamas goes awry, and a woman from 2009 unexpectedly finds herself in 1718 – amidst pirates. Sabrina is so consumed with her present-day problems that the last thing she expects is to suddenly end up face to face with real pirates. The notorious bad boys of the Golden Age of Piracy, Edward England, Howel Davis, and “Black Bart” Roberts, become Sabrina’s means of survival in the past, and ultimately, her key to returning to the future.

The catch? Sabrina happens to be carrying a book about pirates when she is swept into the past, and that book contains biographies of the very men she meets. She forms relationships with them and learns that, contrary to what she previously thought, they are sailors, servants, and slaves who were pressed into service, victims of social and historical circumstances of the era.

When Sabrina finds herself falling in love with Howel Davis, a sailor who becomes a pirate out of desperation, she begins to wonder: Can she use her knowledge to change the past? Is her knowledge a blessing or a curse?

Drug dealers, hustlers, brothels, dirty politics, corrupt cops . . . and sorcery. Welcome to Low Town.
In the forgotten back alleys and flophouses that lie in the shadows of Rigus, the finest city of the Thirteen Lands, you will find Low Town. It is an ugly place, and its champion is an ugly man. Disgraced intelligence agent. Forgotten war hero. Independent drug dealer. After a fall from grace five years ago, a man known as the Warden leads a life of crime, addicted to cheap violence and expensive drugs. Every day is a constant hustle to find new customers and protect his turf from low-life competition like Tancred the Harelip and Ling Chi, the enigmatic crime lord of the heathens.

The Warden’s life of drugged iniquity is shaken by his discovery of a murdered child down a dead-end street . . . setting him on a collision course with the life he left behind. As a former agent with Black House—the secret police—he knows better than anyone that murder in Low Town is an everyday thing, the kind of crime that doesn’t get investigated. To protect his home, he will take part in a dangerous game of deception between underworld bosses and the psychotic head of Black House, but the truth is far darker than he imagines. In Low Town, no one can be trusted.

Daniel Polansky has crafted a thrilling novel steeped in noir sensibilities and relentless action, and set in an original world of stunning imagination, leading to a gut-wrenching, unforeseeable conclusion. Low Town is an attention-grabbing debut that will leave readers riveted . . . and hungry for more.

Dev is a smuggler with the perfect cover. He's in high demand as a guide for the caravans that carry legitimate goods from the city of Ninavel into the country of Alathia. The route through the Whitefire Mountains is treacherous, and Dev is one of the few climbers who knows how to cross them safely. With his skill and connections, it's easy enough to slip contraband charms from Ninavel--where any magic is fair game, no matter how dark--into Alathia, where most magic is outlawed.

But smuggling a few charms is one thing; smuggling a person through the warded Alathian border is near suicidal. Having made a promise to a dying friend, Dev is forced to take on a singularly dangerous cargo: Kiran. A young apprentice on the run from one of the most powerful mages in Ninavel, Kiran is desperate enough to pay a fortune to sneak into a country where discovery means certain execution--and he'll do whatever it takes to prevent Dev from finding out the terrible truth behind his getaway.

Yet the young mage is not the only one harboring a deadly secret. Caught up in a web of subterfuge and dark magic, Dev and Kiran must find a way to trust each other--or face not only their own destruction, but that of the entire city of Ninavel.

Deep beneath the Egyptian sands, an ancient and evil song written in hieroglyphics is discovered in the long lost and buried pyramid of the demonic pharaoh, Aknaseth. It is written, that if this song is performed for the world to hear, it will unleash the Apocalypse upon the world of man…Satan will reign and grant immortality to the chosen.

With the help of abominable Egyptologist, Helmut Hartkopff, nihilistic multibillionaire, Festus Baustone the Third will do whatever it takes to bring the song to life at any cost- even if his only daughter is to be sacrificed.

Kirk Vaisto, dubbed the “God of Guitar” by his millions of fans, soon finds himself caught between the forces of divine good and monumental evil. Vaisto begins a musical journey that takes him from an unholy chapter in ancient Egyptian history to the very remains of the Holy Cross, to the concert stage, and beyond all this, to the very edge of Hell itself.

Will Kirk give the performance of a lifetime and either deliver our world from evil…or will he annihilate us all with the stroke of his hand?

What will happen when Kirk Vasito strikes The Armageddon Chord?

Shaedes of Gray (Shaedes) is slated for publication in December 2011 from NAL.

For a century Darian has existed in a realm of darkness. Made and abandoned, she is a Shaede, virtually immortal with the ability to blend with the shadows once the sun sets. An assassin by trade, she spends her nights as a hired hand, meting out death for the highest bidder. She’s alone in the world, the last of her kind, merely existing—or so she thinks.

When her infatuated employer, Tyler, sends her out on a routine hit, Darian discovers that her new mark is not only another Shaede, but Alexander Peck, King of the Shaede Nation. Her not-so-chance meeting with Alexander takes her deep into the realm of who—and what—she really is. Only when she puts her life in his hands does the supernatural world unfold around her, revealing that she is not as alone as she once thought. Under the tutelage of Alexander’s fiercest warrior, she prepares to find and kill the man who set her adrift in the world of humans.

But with that quest comes danger. Not even Tyler, revealed as her unearthly protector, can save her once she crosses into their dark realm to face the truth. As her role in awakening an ancient evil is revealed, she must face who she was, who she is, and what she could become. From the author's website.
