Skyler Luiken and his ragtag crew of scavengers, scientists, and brawlers have a new mission: a long journey to a distant planet where a race of benevolent aliens are held captive behind a cloud of destructive ships known as the Swarm Blockade. No human ships have ever made it past this impenetrable wall, and Skyler knows not what to anticipate when they reach their destination.

Safe to say that the last thing he expects to find there is a second human ship led by the tough-as-nails captain, Gloria Tsandi. These two crews—and their respective captains—initially clash, but they will have to learn to work together when their mutual foe closes in around them and begins the outright destruction of their vessels—along with any hope of a return to Earth.

Gavin Drake, Baron of Darkwood is being pestered by nosy neighbors and matchmaking mothers of the mortal nobility. To escape their scrutiny, he concludes that it’s time to take a wife. After witnessing the young vampire Lenore’s loyalty to the Lord of London, he decides she is sufficient for the role.

After surviving kidnapping and abuse from rogue vampires, Lenore Graves wants to help other women recover from their inner wounds. She befriends physician John Elliotson and uses her vampire powers to aid him in using mesmerism on his patients. When the Lord Vampire of London declares that Lenore is the price the Lord Vampire of Rochester demands for aiding him in battle the previous year, she is terrified. Will all of her healing and hard work be destroyed by Ruthless Rochester? And yet, she can’t suppress stirrings of desire at the memory of their potent encounter.

After Gavin assures her that the marriage will be in name only, Lenore reluctantly accepts Gavin’s proposal rather than face potential animosity from her new lord. Determined to continue her work, she invites John Elliotson to Rochester. As they help women recover from traumas, Lenore explores her own inner turmoil and examines her attraction to her husband.

Gavin quickly realizes his marriage is a mistake. His new baroness’s involvement with the mesmerist is damaging his reputation among mortals and vampires alike. He knows he should put a stop to Lenore’s antics— yet her tender heart is warming his own and tempting him to make her his bride in truth.

As Lenore and Gavin’s relationship blossoms, the leader of a gang of rogue vampires embarks on a quest for vengeance against Gavin… using Lenore as his key.

A growing fascination with the group’s brilliant, mysterious bass player.

HE OFFERS PLEASURE

Klement Burke has always been the heart, soul and brain of Bleeding Vengeance. From the bestselling horror author of Within These Walls and The Bird Eater comes a brand-new novel of terror that follows a teenager determined to break from his family’s unconventional—and deeply disturbing—traditions.

Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it’s served them well so far. But nineteen-year-old Michael Morrow isn’t like the rest of his family. He doesn’t take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees. Michael pines for normalcy, and he’s sure that someday he’ll see the world beyond West Virginia. When he meets Alice, a pretty girl working at a record shop in the small nearby town of Dahlia, he’s immediately smitten. For a moment, he nearly forgets about the monster he’s become. But his brother, Rebel, is all too eager to remind Michael of his place…

I decided to review the first two books of The First Machine Dynasty, vN and iD, together as I read them back to back. I thought I better get my thoughts down while they were still fresh in my mind and before I read too many books in between.

vN tells the story of Amy who is a human in almost every way but for that the fact she isn't human. She is a von Neumann robot (vN) that can do almost anything a human can do, even replicate. When we first meet Amy she is just a 5 year old girl, in a loving home with a human father and a vN mother. Amy's parents have been starving her so that she remains as a child so that she can experience life as any other child would. It is possible in Ashby's technologically advanced world to maintain the age/size of a vN by carefully controlling their special robotic diet. But Amy isn't just a normal 5 year old. At her kindergarten graduation her psychotic grandmother shows up to try to kill Amy's mother. In order to save her mother Amy ends up eating her grandmother and in the process immediately grows to adult size. The experience leaves her with part of her grandmother inside her brain and pyscho granny isn't happy on the sidelines. Amy finds herself on the run after Granny Portia going on a killing rampage. Portia managed to break the failsafe that stops vNs from harming humans and now Amy has inherited this dysfunction. Everyone wants her captured before she contaminates any other VN. Its not long before Amy finds a saviour in another vN, Javier and together they look for somewhere, anywhere they can be free.

iD is Javier's story and he is on a mission...a mission to find Amy. Without giving too much away Javier makes a grave mistake which harms Amy and he is desperate to make things right. His journey takes him up and down the country, as well as, in and out of danger. We learn more about the vN and the failsafe throughout Javier's travels which gives you a better insight into them and how humanity have been treating this robotic race.

So, what did I think? I think Ashby has created an interesting race with the vN robots and the world that they live in. I can't say that I enjoyed reading either book however. Ashby is fearless in her portrayal of paedophiles who have created their own religion and who own vN that they starve to keep them as children...for obvious reasons. The failsafe kept the young vN from fighting back and therefore, they live in a state of perpetual abuse. The fact that this was known and accepted by the rest of humanity was a bit of a hard pill to swallow and made the books, especially iD, difficult to read. The children weren't the only ones to be abused as even as adults the vN suffer at the hands of humanity which relies heavily on the failsafe which protects them and allows them to treat the vN however they wish.

I thought that both books jumped around too much with both Amy and Javier being rescued at the last minute time and time again. Also, there were whole scenes where I wasn't entirely sure what was going on. On the rare occasion that this happens I will go back and re-read but in the case of these books I couldn't quite face it. I made the assumption that Ashby would clear everything up by the end but this wasn't always the case. I will be the first to admit that I am not the biggest fan of science fiction (books not movies or TV) but there are a few exceptions. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case for Ashby's, First Machine Dynasty. I can't really stomach the paedophilia theme which was prevalent throughout both novels, even if some of them get their comeuppance in the end. This series is dark and violent and not exactly what I was expecting. Perhaps, had there been a slightly more cohesive plot then I may have enjoyed them more.  If you are a big science fiction fan then don't be put off by this review as you may miss out on your new favourite series even though it was not my cup of tea.

Melanie's Week in Review - March 2, 2014

Melanie's Week in Review - March 2, 2014This was a really productive week for me on the reading front but more importantly on the book receiving front. I was mega lucky to get a whole delicious box of books from Qwill. Check it out! I was super douper excited as in the box was the ARC of Dawn's Early Light by Philippa Ballantine and Tee Morris.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series and can hardly wait to dig into it. I was very noble and decided to let the hubinator read it first. How nice am I? I was also really lucky to receive King Maker which is the final book of the Vampire Empire series. I have been trying for about 2 years (poss 3) to find this book in the UK, well find it for a reasonable price and so I jumped at the chance when Qwill said she had it. I also have one of the Eddie Lacrosse books, the next two books in the Suzanne Johnson's Sentinels of New Orleans series and you can just barely see Fallout by James K Decker. Keep your eye out for what I think of these books in either full reviews on here in my Week in Review.

I did also read a book or two! I finished both Vn and iD which are the first two books of the The First Machine Dynasty series by Madeleine Ashby. I will be doing a full review of both of these books so I don't want to give to much away here. What I can say is that I love the covers. They are both eye catching and almost set the mood for the books themselves. I am only going to share the one cover with you so that I don't spoil you for the full review!

Melanie's Week in Review - March 2, 2014I did the happy dance when The Undead Pool by Kim Harrison popped onto my Kindle. I was really looking forward to this installment from The Hollows series as it seemed like quite a while since the last book was out. I like this series but was a tiny bit disappointed by this book. I thought it read like the final book of the series but when I looked on Harrison's website she said she is contracted for one more. I am not sure what plot they are going to squeeze out of Rachel and her quirky group of friends as almost everything seemed to get wrapped up. My favourite character, the fairy Jenks was much more in the background. There were relatively few exclamations like 'Tink's titties' for my liking. Both Jenks and Ivy appeared in every chapter but they shared much less of the 'limelight' than they did in other novels in this series. Nearly every secondary character was involved in some way in the plot which also lent itself to the 'final' book feeling. I am always a tad disappointed when an author continues a series when they have hit on a great exit novel. This aside I did like it and look forward to the actual final book.

Melanie's Week in Review - March 2, 2014The last book I want to tell you about is Last Blood by Kristen Painter which is the actual final book of the House of Comarre series. I really enjoyed this series at first. I thought that Chrysabelle was quite kick ass for a vampire blood donor and the cursed vampire Malkom reminded me of Angel (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). As the series progressed I lost interest in the characters and almost gave up at book 4. I was doing a little trawl of Amazon and discovered this final instalment on sale so thought I might as well get closure. All I can say is I wish this book had stayed locked in the forgotten part of my memory. I was quite bored and flicking pages towards the end. This series suffered from too many characters who all seemed to fight to be the reader's favourite and none of them succeeded...at least not with me. As a consequence they were rather one dimensional. If they were good they practically had a halo and if they were bad they cackled like a witch. All this did was make me lose interest as the characters were way to predictable which gives me a big case of the snores.

Well that is it for me. I am hoping to read a few of my 'Qwill goodies' next week so please check in and find out what I read and what I thought. Until then Happy Reading.
