Review: Into Darkness by J.T. Geissinger
In New Vienna, capital of the oppressive global government formed after the Flash, three things are certain: the sun is poisonous, speaking out is dangerous, and being different will get you killed.

And Lumina Bohn is extraordinarily different. Living in terror of discovery, Lu knows nothing of her past—but she knows she must pretend to be human to survive. When an incident at work triggers her astonishing powers, she becomes the target of an international manhunt. Only one person can save her: Magnus, the enigmatic stranger haunting her dreams. Magnus rescues the outcasts called Aberrants from capture and torture.

As Lu begins exploring her powers among her people, her feelings for Magnus intensify. He’s determined to stay emotionally distant, yet their smoldering passion soon becomes impossible to resist. But when a shocking revelation threatens the lives of every remaining Aberrant, Lu and Magnus must risk everything, confronting their enemies in an explosive final stand to save their kind from the darkest fate of all: extinction.

Melanie's Thoughts

I have been a big fan of this series and really pleased that I have been given the opportunity to receive e-Arcs of most of the Night Prowler series. Geissinger ends this fantastic series with Into Darkness. In this final instalment Geissinger sets the book twenty plus years in the future. Everything changed since the ending of Darkness Bound when jets fly over the Brazilian iKati community. The world is a very different place where the sky is red, society is oppressed and anyone different is killed. Lumina Bohn finds almost everything in her life has been a lie apart for her attraction to the hunky, yet disfigured Magnus. Lumina is more than what she seems or who she thinks she is. It isn't long before we discover that Lumina is really Hope, one of Elena and Leander's twins. She is fighting not just for her survival but also for Magnus, her sister Honor and the whole iKati race.

I think that Geissinger was both brave and innovative to set this final instalment in the future. It would have been quite easy for Geissinger to just continue in present day and focus on the romance but instead she decided to shake it up. Lumina's world is a terrible place where nearly everyone lives in fear and where the iKati have been almost driven to extinction by the evil Sebastian Thorne.  Lumina/Hope has to dig deep, with the help of Magnus and a few other iKati to re-discover who she really is and hopefully save her race. As strong and as brave as Hope was I still enjoyed the Elena chapters more, although these were few and far between. I felt that Geissinger was rather brutal to her long standing characters and I almost missed their perfection from the previous novels.

Geissinger does make heavy use of one plot device that I wasn't that keen on - immortality. I feel that immortality should only be used for special occasions, kind of like sexy underwear. I thought that immortality really made the evil madman, Caesar a formidable foe in the previous books. In the case of Into Darkness I would have preferred if it had been used a little less than it was.

Overall, Into Darkness was a solid conclusion to a urban fantasy series that I have enjoyed reading over the last few years. This wasn't my favourite  book of the series but it demonstrated that is Geissinger is happy to challenge her readers and doesn't play favourites with her characters. She builds the plot over each of the novels and really packs a punch in this finale. This is a great series for those who like a slow burn HEA.

Melanie's Week in Review - September 21, 2014

Before I launch into what I read this week I thought I would say Happy Birthday to my Mom. She is 84 today. While she is now visually impaired so can't read this post (or know that I am writing it) I thought that she would still appreciate knowing that whoever reads this could be thinking happy thoughts for her. So everyone......1.........2.........3......think happy birthday thoughts for Christine!

So enough of my maternal self promotion. What did I read?

Melanie's Week in Review - September 21, 2014
This week wasn't as productive as the two previous but boy, did I read a couple of great books. I started the week with The Martian by Andy Weir. Is there something better than waxing lyrical? If there is then that is what I am going to do. I LOVED THIS BOOK! Love with a capital 'L'. Andy Weir managed to couple botany with science fiction and crazy funny dialogue with excellent results. Remember, I like watching science fiction better than reading it but The Martian broke that mold for me.

Imagine if you will....Mark Watney - engineer/botanist has been stranded on Mars with only 30 days worth of supplies and no way to communicate with Earth. His crew mates think he is dead and no one is coming back for 4 years. Mark has to use every bit of his enormous brain, ingenuity and a healthy dose of luck in order to survive and try to find a way home. Can he do it? You will have to read it to find out.

I couldn't have been more surprised by The Martian. I saw that it got quite a few stars on Goodreads and Amazon but I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did. I was LOL'ing on public transport, I was biting my nails at what would happen next and staying up WAY past my bedtime to read just one more chapter. Drop whatever you are doing (well after you read the rest of this post) and go buy this book and read it. You may also read a DAC interview with Andy about The Martian and writing here.

Melanie's Week in Review - September 21, 2014
Next on my TBR was Into Darkness by J.T Geissinger. This is the final book of the Night Prowler series and will be released in mid October by Montlake Romance. I will be writing a full review of this book so I don't want to say too much other than its a cracker of a final book. There is still time for you to catch up by reading the other 5 books before this released so get going. I have reviewed three of the other books at The Qwillery so if you want to find out what I have thought of the series so far check them out here, here, and here.

Melanie's Week in Review - September 21, 2014
The final book I have been able to read this week was Shadowlark (Skylark Trilogy 2) by Meagan Spooner. I really enjoyed Skylark (book 1) of this dystopian young adult trilogy. I have been waiting for the price of the second book to drop since it was released and have to admit I had forgotten about it. I was checking my Amazon recommendations and up it popped. In book 2, Lark continues her journey to find her brother after leaving the Iron Wood. After a near death experience or two she finds herself in the city of Lethe where Renewables are hunted and enslaved just as she had been. Lark inadvertently joins a group of rebels who are fighting against the evil ruler, Prometheus. Lark learns more about herself, more than she ever wanted to, throughout this novel and it's only a matter of time before she comes face to face with her greatest fear - herself.

I don't know what it is about subsequent books in young adult or youth fiction series but I find I don't like them as much as the first . For example, I didn't enjoy World After (book 2 of the Penryn and the End of Days series) by Susan Ee (or book 3) or Taste of Darkness (book 2 of the Healer series) by Maria V. Snyder. The characters I loved from the first books turned either all whiny or all soppy over some guy/angel. This is exactly what happened in Shadowlark. I actually got quite sniffy at the end of book 1 but I could hardly wait to get to the end of this one. Book 3 - Lark Ascending is out soon but I am not convinced I want to continue. I think I will wait and see what the price is before I make that decision.

That is it for me for this week. I hope you have a good week ahead and until next week Happy Reading.

Review: Darkness Bound by J. T. Geissinger
Tough, smart, and seriously ambitious, reporter Jacqueline “Jack” Dolan despises the secretive clan of shape-shifters known as the Ikati—and has become determined to destroy them. After she writes an editorial arguing for their extermination and turns public opinion against them, the Ikati vow to fight back. They plot to send one of their own to seduce the reporter, then blackmail her into writing a retraction.

Women practically fall at the feet of hulking, handsome Hawk Luna, and Hawk relishes the idea of conquering and destroying the fiery redhead who’s caused so much trouble for his kind. The last thing he expects is to develop real feelings for her, but their liaison awakens a hunger in him that he cannot deny. He kidnaps Jack and brings her to his Amazon jungle colony, but the two lovers are soon embroiled in deadly colony politics and threatened by a looming global species war.

As the danger around them grows closer, Jack and Hawk’s forbidden passion may build a bridge between two ancient enemies—or cost them both their lives.

Melanie's Thoughts

Darkness Bound is the 5th and penultimate book of the Night Prowler series by J. T. Geissinger. In this instalment Hawk the hunky Ikati shifter leaves the safe confines of the Brazilian colony in search of the fiery journalist Jacqueline (Jack).  Jack has helped to fan the flames of discord between humanity and the Ikati with her articles following events in book 3. Hawk needs to convince Jack to come with him to see that the ikati aren't as evil as Caesar has portrayed them to be. He has found the perfect piece of blackmail and its not long before Jack is forced to see the other side of her story.

I have enjoyed this series and especially liked book 4 - Edge of Darkness. Overall, in the series I thought that Geissinger has got the balance between the romance and action just about right. However, with Darkness Bound I thought that 'the sexy' started far too early and this diminished the romance later on in the story.  Jack was an interesting character and her terrible secret was terrible indeed. She was feisty and strong which always like in a heroine but at the same time I didn't really find anything about her that made me like her. I found the tall, muscley shifter Hawk to be a bit too similar to his fellow shifter Xander from book 2 - Edge of Oblivion. The fact that Xander lived in the same colony as Hawk only emphasized the similarities in their bad boy broodiness. I didn't really find these two as engaging as some of the other characters in this series.

Luckily, the book didn't focus solely on Jack and Hawk as some of my favourite characters are back in book 5 including Jenna and Leander. This couple almost steal the show from Jack and Hawk's love story. Jenna is the queen in every sense of the word and takes centre stage in every scene she is in. In fact, I was looking more forward to Jenna than I was with either Hawk or Jack. We also find out what happened to our favourite baddy - Caesar who is back to wreak havoc on both humanity and the Ikati. But does he get away with it? You will have to read it to find out. Perhaps the scariest of all are two characters who have been in the background in the last 2 books - Jenna and Leander's twin babies. Yes, scary babies! Even their parents think so.

I liked this book but perhaps not as much as the others as I didn't engage with the love story. In my view Geissinger saves it all for the ending of the book which is practically on fire it is so exciting. I will be interested to see how Geissinger uses Jack and Hawk in the final book as she seems to be bring together characters from the previous books in this penultimate book to set the stage for book 6. Into Darkness is out in October so its only a few months before I get to find out what happens to my favourite characters and the Ikati.

Melanie's Week in Review - May 4, 2014

Eeeep. This week has a very unproductive week on the reading front.  I only finished 1 book. ONE BOOK!!! ONLY 1!!!! But your honor I have an alibi. I worked from home one day due to a 48 hour tube strike so that was 2 hours of concentrated reading lost. Then I caught the office lurgy and felt like I had been hit by a tube train so missed a day at work and another 2 hours of reading time. Well that is my excuse and I am sticking to it. So what did I read?

Melanie's Week in Review - May 4, 2014
It was quite by accident that I was scrolling through Twitter and saw a tweet from another reviewer that they were reading Darkness Bound by J.T Geissinger. Racked with jealousy that someone else was reading the latest book from the Night Prowler series I practically sprinted to my computer to request it from NetGalley. Lucky old me has auto approval from the publisher, Montlake so I was tucking in and had it read by the next day. Not to taunt you too much but I can't say much more as I will be writing a full review so keep your eye out for it.

Melanie's Week in Review - May 4, 2014I have been determined to reduce my TBR so I decided to read Shift by Hugh Howey. This is the prequel to Wool which I completely forgot that I had. I loved Wool and Shift is a real nail biter. I am really enjoying it but it is taking me a long time to read it. I am hoping to finish it this weekend so I can tell you all about it next week.

I guess I had better 'fess' up and admit that instead of reducing my TBR I have received 2 more books from NetGalley (hangs head in shame). I requested The Buried Life by Carrie Patel and The Severed Streets by Paul Cornell. I am looking forward to reading these two books over the next few weeks.  Until then I hope you have a good week and Happy Reading.

Review: Edge of Darkness (Night Prowler 4) by J. T. Geissinger
Six years after a shocking tragedy left her emotionally and physically scarred, Ember Jones lives a life of quiet isolation in Barcelona. Determined to keep her troubled past a secret, she keeps her head down and her heart locked up tight. Until the day a beautiful, mysterious stranger walks into her life, and her carefully controlled world is shattered forever.

Christian McLoughlin is unlike anyone Ember has ever met. Wealthy, cultured, and utterly charismatic, he also has dark secrets of his own. They succumb to the undeniable pull between them and embark on a passionate affair, but things turn explosive when the truth about Christian and the reason he came to Barcelona is exposed. As their dark pasts collide, the two unlikely lovers find themselves caught in a web of danger and deceit that neither of them might survive.

The Edge of Darkness, where hunter becomes hunted, no one can be trusted, and love is the most dangerous game of them all.

Melanie's Thoughts:

If I could get away with a one word review then my review for Edge of Darkness would be simply 'wow'. But no, I need to say more about this fantastic instalment of the Night Prowler series. Geissinger, pulls out all the stops in the story of Christian, who we first meet in book 1, Shadow's Edge. Edge of Darkness has something for everyone and then some. Its has tension, suspense, great new characters, a sassy heroine with a deep, dark secret and development of not 1 but 2 plot arcs. It stays true to its PNR roots but not to the detriment of the plot.

The first book of this series starts with a love letter and this fourth installment starts with a letter as well but of a different kind. This time it's a note from the super, evil baddy Caesar whose true character was revealed in book 3. Caesar's letter is addressed to all of  humanity informing them of his supremacy, the power of the Ikati and their imminent demise. This sets the tone for the whole novel with the heartless cruelty of this antagonist at the forefront of the plot yet again.

The story takes place in Barcelona and Geissinger has selected another beautiful, historic city for the setting of her love story. Our heroine, Ember moved to the city with her father after her mother and brother died in a tragic car accident. This is where Ember's deep dark secret comes in and Geissinger teases the reader throughout the plot as to what it could be and leaves us hanging until the final chapters to reveal it all. Ember is one of my favourite types of heroine. She is strong, flawed and best of all plain! Nothing is better in PNR, in my view, then when one of the love interests is amazingly gorgeous and the other is described as plain. It's very Pride and Prejudice, with Eliza Bennett's not living up to the beauty of her sister Jane but for her 'fine eyes'. Ember reminded me of a modern day Eliza Bennett. She was smart, sticks up for herself and of course, had rather than 'fine' eyes had piercingly intelligent ones.

Fulfilling the role of the gorgeous hero is Christian who readers will remember from Shadow's Edge. Christian has been sent to Barcelona to track down the evil Caesar and encounters Ember at the bookshop that she owns with her evil stepmother. Qwill asked me about my use of the word 'evil' to describe Ember's stepmother as it sounded a bit 'Cinderella-esque'. She wasn't evil in the traditional meaning of the word but was very unpleasant to Ember and had two equally unpleasant daughters making Ember seem quite a bit like Cinderella. Christian slowly starts to woo the reluctant Ember knowing the dangers of courting a human. Christian has his own secrets to keep and runs the risk of them being exposed if he gets any closer to her. Opposites attract is the theme of this story with the gorgeous, wealthy and shapeshifting Christian falling in love with the plain, poor and very, very human Ember. This is a relationship that's hard not to like.

Caesar isn't the only antagonist we are encounter in Edge of Darkness. Geissinger brings back a baddy we met in one of the earlier books in the series. I'm not going to say who is back to cause mischief and mayhem so you will have to read the book to find out. Multiple antagonists with their own motivations can make a plot confusing but in this case Geissinger cleverly ties these threads together and we are left again wondering how and when the plot arc will be resolved. There is another big cliff hanger in store for the reader so prepare yourself.

Well what can I say? This is a great book. Hats off to Geissinger as she managed take me from 'I like this series' to 'I love this series'. I have already started to bite my nails in anticipation for what may be in store in final few books of the Night Prowler series.

Melanie's Week in Review - September 22, 2013

I will start this post off with a mini apology. I am later than I normally like to be writing my WIR. I have gotten back into playing a game on my Xbox called Dragon Age Origins which I have played before. My best friend and I were talking about the newest game in the series to be released in 2014 which got me reminiscing about my favourite characters. I thought I would re-play the first hour or so and I am now 6 hours into the game and back to being obsessed! Extremely naughty as stuff I need to get done....like reviews aren't happening as quickly as they should.

Melanie's Week in Review - September 22, 2013
Enough of that though...onto books. I have had another excellent week of reading. I was minding my own business on Twitter when I saw a tweet by J.T Geissinger saying her latest release Edge of Darkness was on NetGalley. If it was possible to  to trip racing to NetGalley then I think I would have. I had the book downloaded and started reading about 5 minutes later. I have been enjoying this series and this book was no exception. I am going to be reviewing it so not in a position to say too much here. Keep your eye out for it though as I have lots to say!

Melanie's Week in Review - September 22, 2013I also had a little delivery through my letterbox in the form of Chimes at Midnight by Seanan McGuire.  This continues the October Daye series and finds one of our favourite heroines back to risking life and limb. I really enjoyed this installment and perhaps more than the last. In previous books October has been almost as obsessed with drinking coffee as she is with fighting baddies. In fact when I think back that is what I remember about the story rather than what 'really' happened. In Chimes at Midnight October loses her coffee obsession and this lets the plot shine though. There is lots more of Tybalt who I really like as a character,as well as The Luidaeg. McGuire is a great storyteller and even more so that she can switch between different genres so successfully. I absolutely loved The Newsflesh trilogy written under her Mira Grant pseudonym. Chimes at Midnight is another great book in the series with chases, near death experiences and a lot of plot development.

Melanie's Week in Review - September 22, 2013
I am ending the week reading Cracked by Eliza Crewe which I am LOVING! I will also be reviewing this one but what I can say it is HILARIOUS. I am going to have to restrain myself and not quote all the funny lines. I am not sure but I think it is YA but there is a lot of blood, guts and swearing. Maybe it is 'funny' genre?

I thought it was quite interesting reading a number of tweets and blog posts about book reviews and reviewers this week. One that I thought was very interesting was on Ilona Andrews' blog. They (not sure if it was Ilona or Gordon who wrote it) were discussing how readers interpret their books differently....differently to how they thought they had written it. They also talked about negative reviews and reviewers in general. I find it interesting how book reviews seem to be more 'volatile' than other types of review - restaurant reviews, theatre reviews, movie reviews. I find this odd. I have made decisions not to watch a movie if it got poor reviews but seldom use reviews to decide whether or not to read a book. I wonder why this is? Do we put more value into book reviews than other types and that is why people tend to comment more to negative reviews? Chuck Wendig tweeted that he doesn't read reviews which I also thought was interesting....and maybe a tiny bit disappointing as a reviewer. Whether I like a book or not I value the fact the author can do ...or did do something I haven't and likely ever to, which is to write a book. I did have to force myself not to read all the comments or I wouldn't have gotten anything else read. I am sure the topic will come up again on Twitter again soon.

I better finish this off so I can get it posted so that's it for me folks, until next week Happy Reading,

Review: Rapture's Edge by J.T. Geissinger - June 22, 2013
SECRETS…In the hidden world that exists beside our own, a mirror world of ancient magic and elegant deceptions, a world of people who are so much more than they first appear, a war is brewing. Most of these Gifted people—the Ikati, a savage, sensual race of lethal predators—are content to hide behind human smiles, disguising their splendor in order to survive. But others are discontent. And they will hide no longer.

BETRAYALS…Eliana lives for two things only: vengeance on the man who killed her father and seeing her father’s dream of living in the open with humans come to pass. But that dream is far too dangerous for The Hunt, a group of elite Ikati assassins with one objective: eliminate her before she can expose their secrets to the world.

SEDUCTION…Demetrius is haunted by the memory of the woman he once loved. He will risk everything to save her from the killers on her tail…and convince her, before the ancient walls between two worlds crumble, that only together can they defeat their real enemy, a brilliant, cunning traitor far more deadly than either of them can guess

Melanie's Thoughts:

Rapture's Edge, the 3rd Night Prowler novel, is set three years after Edge of Oblivion with Eliana and part of her former colony now living in the catacombs of Paris. While Eliana has been forced into a life of crime as an art thief, Demetrius is still searching wistfully for his lost love. Eliana believes that Demetrius killed her father and is oblivious to how evil her father really was. She has also befriended a human which is virtually unheard of within the Ikati. Everything kicks off when Eliana is caught by the police while attempting to steal a painting in the Louvre with Demetrius watching the arrest on the TV from Rome. Fate is truly a cruel mistress as Demetrius faces Eliana's rejection and she learns her father's plans for her and her kind. The question is can they both survive to discover the truth and their once forbidden love?

A Kindle recommendation led me to the first book Shadow's Edge and I am quite enjoying this series. While distributed by a romance publisher, I appreciate that the books are focused more on plot than romance. In fact, as the series matures, there seems to be less and less romance and more and more action. In Rapture's Edge there are some quite chilling scenes involving Caesar, Eliana's brother, as well as the disclosure of their father's plans for the both of them. Extremely creepy is what came to mind when I read those scenes. Geissinger has also created strong, forthright female characters who can take care of themselves and don't fall apart when things go wrong ... and boy, do they go wrong!

Our favourite couple is back - Jenna and Leander who have quite a big role in the latter half of the story. There are also two new key characters -Gregor who is human and Melliane (please note the similarities in our names...coincidence?), both of whom are friends of Eliana and assist in both plot and character development.

I enjoyed Rapture's Edge the most so far, and Geissinger is really ramping up the plot arc to what looks like a chilling end. I can hardly wait to find out what happens next. My enjoyment is only marred by two small things. 1) I don’t like how Demetrius refers to Eliana as 'baby girl'. I think this is overly macho and just a bit too patronising, especially when Eliana is quite self sufficient and kick ass. 2) I had really hoped this series would wrap up in the next book (could stretch to 2 more) but I discovered on Geissinger's website that three more books are planned. I am worried that if there is a book per main character that this will dilute the plot arc.  Fingers crossed I am wrong on this. Other than those small things, I would recommend Rapture's Edge to anyone who likes a novel with kick ass heroines and smatterings of romance.

Melanie's Week in Review - May 26, 2013

This has been a week that I can only describe as 'pants mcpantus'. I have had a week of almost 100% stress at work and looked forward to escaping into some really good books. I was mostly successful on this front.

Melanie's Week in Review - May 26, 2013
For those of you have been checking out my 'week in review' you will know that last week I discovered Alex Bledsoe's Eddie La Crosse series. I enjoyed Blonde Edged Sword and Burn Me Deadly so much that I rushed to buy the third and fourth books of the series. I decided to be magnanimous and let the 'hubinator' read book 3 - Dark Jenny - before me.  I hope to be able to tell you a bit more about what I thought of these books next week.

Applause everyone!! I finished The Scrivener's Tale by Fiona McIntosh. This book has taken me an unusually long time to finish but I am reviewing it soon so keep your eye out what I thought of it.

Melanie's Week in Review - May 26, 2013
OK....I confess.....I started a new series rather than reading one of the many, many books on my TBR. I got lured into buying a free book from my Kindle recommendations (can you buy a free book?) and am now on book 4 of the series.  So what tempted me to the dark side...the side of buying new rather than reading what I already have?  I ran across Lindsay Buroker's The Emperor's Edge series. Book 1  - The Emperor's Edge was for free, free, free, from Amazon and I really liked it so decided to get book 2 - Dark Currents. As my week turned more and more stressful from work I kept going on the series that I was already enjoying rather than risking something I hadn't read yet. So I finished Deadly Games today which was quite grisly and had a tiny bit more romance between our hero and heroine. I just started Conspiracy and its turning out to be another consistently good book from the series. These are self pubs and you won't be wowed by the covers but its what's inside that counts, after all.

I also started Mike Shevdon's The Eighth Court (Courts of the Feyre 4). I have enjoyed this series, especially the first two books. I am not that far into the book as I will be reviewing it and didn't want to read it too closely to The Scrivener's Tale.

Melanie's Week in Review - May 26, 2013
Lucky me also got J.T. Geissinger's new book Rapture's Edge from NetGalley. I have really enjoyed the Night Prowler series so far and I am certain to like this next installment. The nice people from Kindle also offered Mark T. Barnes's The Garden of Stones for £1.99 so it is now gracing my TBR. Another week of making my TBR grow rather than making it smaller!  At least I have some goodies to read next week.

I would love to know what you are reading so leave a comment or send me a tweet @mellidrama.  Wishing you a great week and Happy Reading!
