Review: The Fiery Heart (Bloodlines 4) by RIchelle Mead
Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets – and human lives.

In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her . . .

But the struggle isn’t over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there’s still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure – and re-education – looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race through this smoldering fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

Doreen’s Thoughts:

I was somewhat leery when I first discovered that Richelle Mead was using two narrators for her latest entry in the Bloodlines series. We first met Sydney and Adrian in Mead’s earlier series, Vampire Academy, and the three prior books in this series have always had Sydney as the single narrator. However, Mead did a good job with juggling two perspectives. Rather than seeing events from two different perspectives, she chose to alternate the narratives, and Sydney’s story picks up after Adrian’s. Mead also did well in using different tones of voice for each character. Overall, it was a nice change to add Adrian’s perspective.

In this novel, Sydney juggles her secret relationship with Adrian, her attempts to assist Marcus in resisting the Alchemists, and her “real” job coordinating the Moroi and dhampirs in her charge. Having her younger sister come to assist her only complicates matters. She is at peace with her decision to be with Adrian and much more accepting of her magical talents, but her ties to the Alchemists set her up for failure in more than one way.

I appreciated Mead’s delicate touch with the love story in this one. Being able to see both sides of the relationship broadened my understanding of the difficulties the two lovers face. While there is the hint of sex, the scenes are broad and appropriate for readers of most ages. I saw the ending much too early in the novel for my taste, but overall the plot was intriguing enough to carry through the book. In addition, I really dislike endings that require another novel to carry on the story, rather than tie up the threads for that book and leave room for others. However, I enjoy Mead’s writing too much not to continue on with the next book in the series – I will be eagerly awaiting its release.

My Favorite Comics of 2011 and Giveaway - December 23, 2011

I collect a lot of comics. I probably collect too many comics if that is even possible. Three comics stand out as my favorites of 2011. They have nothing in common except they represent things I really like and are very well done.

The comics (in alphabetical order):

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge kaiju fan and my favorite kaiju of all is Gojira/Godzilla. I'm especially fond of the Godzilla films from Toho Studios. Don't get me started on Godzilla films made here in the US. We just don't do it right!  I have kaiju plush, all the Godzilla movies I can get, Godzilla trading cards, etc. I admit I generally root for the big green lizard as it stomps its way through various cities. So when IDW Publishing announced Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters in conjunction with Toho Co., Ltd., I may have squeed a bit. Okay, a lot. Happily the comic does not disappoint. I'd love to frame each and every cover. They are exceptional. The inside of the comic is not bad either! I love all of the covers so I'll share just a few.

This is probably my most favorite though. It's a variant of Issue 1 and hand-drawn by Eric Powell. No two are exactly alike. I know this for certain because I have 2 of these.

Lady Mechanika

Lady Mechanika's first edition was published in 2010, but it remains one of my favorite comics. It's published by Aspen Comics and is the brainchild of Joe Benitez. This is a gorgeous steampunk comic. The story is great and the comic covers and art are just brilliant. There is a wonderful esthetic to this comic. Fortunately prints are available from the Aspen Store so I don't have to frame the comics. I love all the covers. Here are the covers from the first 4 issues. Story and Art is by Joe Benitez; Colors are by Peter Steigerwald; and Letters are by Josh Reed. Each issue had several covers. I collect all of them.  You should read this comic!

I really like comics based on Urban Fantasy novels. I collect several. My favorite though is Sea Lion Book's stellar Richelle Mead Dark Swan: Storm Born. My Favorite Comics of 2011 and Giveaway - December 23, 2011
Just typical. No love life to speak of for months, then all at once, every horny creature in the Otherworld wants to get in your pants…

Eugenie Markham is a powerful shaman who does a brisk trade banishing spirits and fey who cross into the mortal world. Mercenary, yes, but a girl’s got to eat. Her most recent case, however, is enough to ruin her appetite. Hired to find a teenager who has been taken to the Otherworld, Eugenie comes face to face with a startling prophecy—one that uncovers dark secrets about her past and claims that Eugenie’s first-born will threaten the future of the world as she knows it.

Now Eugenie is a hot target for every ambitious demon and Otherworldy ne’er-do-well, and the ones who don’t want to knock her up want her dead. Eugenie handles a Glock as smoothly as she wields a wand, but she needs some formidable allies for a job like this. She finds them in Dorian, a seductive fairy king with a taste for bondage, and Kiyo, a gorgeous shape-shifter who redefines animal attraction. But with enemies growing bolder and time running out, Eugenie realizes that the greatest danger is yet to come, and it lies in the dark powers that are stirring to life within her…
There are 3 additional books in the series. The 4th book, Shadow Heir, will be published on December 27, 2011.

Issue 2 of Richelle Mead's Dark Swan: Storm Born picks up immediately after the events in Issue 1.  Once again I read the comic alongside the novel to check whether it lived up to the high standard of Issue 1 with respect to the story.  Again, I was not disappointed. Other than switching around a couple of scenes, Issue 2 follows the book almost exactly.  The scenes work well in the book in the original order and work just as well in the comic in the reversed order. The flow of the comic is excellent.

The art work by Dave Hamman is exceptional as is the color. The comic truly captures the novel and brings it to life. It's almost cinematic. I'm afraid that I will run out of superlatives for this comic. As I said before, you don't have to read the novel - you can just read the comic. Really!

I highly recommend Richelle Mead's Dark Swan: Storm Born, Issue 2 and give it 5 Qwills.

I always have a bit of concern when I read a comic based on a book. Will the comic be true to the story? Will something important be missed or lost? Will the main character meet my expectations in terms of how she or he looks and acts?

I carefully compared Richelle Mead's Dark Swan: Storm Born, Issue 1 from Sea Lion Books to the novel Storm Born. In this instance I can say that I was not disappointed in the least bit.

Issue 1 of the comic covers the novel from the beginning to approximately page 48. Close attention to the novel has been paid down to the smallest details. For example, the sneaker in the opening pages of the comic matches the colors described in the book.

Grant Alter has really done a superb job with the script. The flow of the story and dialog is extremely close to that in the book. Nothing seems to be left out. Just like the book, the pacing in the comic is excellent.

I really like the artwork. Dave Hamann has done a great job of rendering the characters. The colors by Nelson Cosentino de Oliveira are beautiful. Eugenie looks like how I would expect her to look right down to her violet eyes and cinnamon colored hair.

Very clearly the novel has been captured in the comic to the point that you can read Issue 1 of the comic and not need to read the beginning of the novel. The comic is that good! I am looking forward to all 8 issues.

If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy or Richelle Mead or both this is the comic for you.

I highly recommend Richelle Mead's Dark Swan: Storm Born, Issue 1 and give the comic 5 Qwills.

ATLANTA, GA - March 22, 2011– In the novel Storm Born, first in the popular Dark Swan urban fantasy series, Richelle Mead—New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Vampire Academy and the Georgia Kincaid Series—introduced fans of paranormal romance to Eugenie Markham, a freelance shaman who battles the ghosts and fey that sneak into our world from the Otherworld.

Today, Sea Lion Books is proud to announce scripter Grant Alter and artist Dave Hamann as the multitalented creative team behind the graphic novel adaptation of Richelle Mead's Dark Swan: Storm Born. Grant Alter was the co-writer (with Derek Ruiz) on Dean Koontz’ Fear Nothing, a graphic novel adaptation by the New York Times bestselling author. His other scripting projects include an adaptation of the Jim Butcher short story “Restoration of Faith,” which appeared in the graphic novel Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files: Storm Front.

"Richelle has written a book with a really nice mix of action, romance, the otherworldly, and even a good amount of humor,” Alters said. “It's just a fun book to read. The quality of her work pushes me to write what I think are some of the best scripts I have ever written."

Graphic artist Dave Hamann’s projects include Amory Wars for Evil Ink Comics, Gauze for Arcana Comics, and Zenescope's Grimm Fairy Tales. As a fan of the Dark Swan series, he wants to remain faithful to Mead’s story, and to her lead character, Eugenie. "I'm hard-pressed to think of too many urban comics starring a strong, butt-kicking, female shamanic mercenary."

"Grant and Dave have done a really amazing job in capturing Eugenie's story. It's been wonderful working with them, and I can't wait to see what fans think of the final product. I hope they love it as much as I do," said Richelle Mead.
