Hardcover and eBook, September 1, 2015

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors, Part 46
In Fran Wilde's Updraft, a young woman must expose a dangerous secret to save everyone she loves.

Welcome to a world of wind and bone, songs and silence, betrayal and courage.

Kirit Densira cannot wait to pass her wingtest and begin flying as a trader by her mother's side, being in service to her beloved home tower and exploring the skies beyond. When Kirit inadvertently breaks Tower Law, the city's secretive governing body, the Singers, demand that she become one of them instead. In an attempt to save her family from greater censure, Kirit must give up her dreams to throw herself into the dangerous training at the Spire, the tallest, most forbidding tower, deep at the heart of the City.

As she grows in knowledge and power, she starts to uncover the depths of Spire secrets. Kirit begins to doubt her world and its unassailable Laws, setting in motion a chain of events that will lead to a haunting choice, and may well change the city forever-if it isn't destroyed outright.

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors, Part 46
After the dust settles, the City of living bones begins to die, and more trouble brews beneath the clouds in this stirring companion to Fran Wilde's Updraft.

When Kirit Densira left her home tower for the skies, she gave up many things: her beloved family, her known way of life, her dreams of flying as a trader for her tower, her dreams. Kirit set her City upside down, and fomented a massive rebellion at the Spire, to the good of the towers--but months later, everything has fallen to pieces.

With the Towers in disarray, without a governing body or any defense against the dangers lurking in the clouds, daily life is full of terror and strife. Nat, Kirit's wing-brother, sets out to be a hero in his own way--sitting on the new Council to cast votes protecting Tower-born, and exploring lower tiers to find more materials to repair the struggling City.

But what he finds down-tier is more secrets--and now Nat will have to decide who to trust, and how to trust himself without losing those he holds most dear, before a dangerous myth raises a surprisingly realistic threat to the crippled City, in Cloudbound.

"Cloudbound by Fran Wilde is a thrilling and complex tale about the most difficult stage of a revolution: what do you do after you win? Highly recommended both for the story it tells as well as how it tells that story. Wilde takes risks that pay off hugely.”—Ken Liu, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of The Grace of Kings

Book Two of the Jubilee Cycle
Talos, May 23, 2017
Hardcover and eBook, 400 pages

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors, Part 46
In a world stripped bare of digital images and promotainment, unveiled with the audiovisual overlay of the ImmaNet, in an exposed world, a naked world, Amon Kenzaki awakens, lost and alone. He must now travel deep into the District of Dreams in search of Rashana Birla, the one person that might help him unravel the mystery of jubilee. But deprived of the apps and informational tools he’s depended on his entire life, traversing the largest bankdeath camp on Earth is no easy task.

Inside an ephemeral labyrinth of slowly-dissolving disposable skyscrapers clogged to the limit with the bankdead masses, Amon soon finds himself face to face with two dangerous groups: a cult called the Opportunity Scientists, who preach bizarre superstitions about economic salvation, and a supposedly humanitarian organization called the Philanthropy Syndicate, whose mandate of serving the poor conceals rapacious motives.

Amon takes refuge in Xenocryst, a community that genuinely strives to improve conditions in the camps, where he begins to work towards its cause and reconciles himself to his newfound poverty. But when political forces threaten the community’s existence and the lives of its members, he is forced to team up with a vending-machine designer, an Olympic runner, a fertility researcher, a corporate tycoon, and many others to expose the heinous secret festering at the heart of the action-transaction market he once served.

In book two of the Jubilee Cycle, Eli K. P. William delves beneath the surface of his cyber-dystopian Tokyo to unearth the fate of outcasts trapped in its depths and shine a light on the financial obstacles blocking one individual’s efforts to help them.

What's Up for the Debut Author Challenge Authors? - Part 7
Ash would have given her life to save her teammates.

Instead, they gave their lives to save hers.

Lieutenant Ramie Ashdyn is an anomaly, a person whose genetics makes her stronger and smarter than the average human. She’s pledged her life to protect the Coalition, an alliance of thirteen planetary systems, but when a top secret operation turns bloody, she’s charged with treason and the brutal executions of her teammates.

The Coalition needs the information Ash’s team stole on their last mission, so they send in Commander Rhys “Rest in Peace” Rykus to get it. He’s the man who’s responsible for turning Ash into an elite soldier... and he’s a man who isn’t, never was, and never will be in love with the woman he trained. Or so he tells himself.

Ash wants nothing more than to clear her name and be the woman her former instructor wants her to be, but the enemy who killed her teammates did more than frame her for treason and murder: they telepathically silenced her mind, preventing her from saying anything that might point to the truth about what happened.

Now Ash is trapped and set to be executed, the truth dying with her. Unless she can prove her innocence. But taking that path could destroy the Coalition she’s sworn to preserve and protect...

Interview with Sandy Williams, author of the Shadow Reader series - January 7, 2014

Please welcome Sandy Williams to The Qwillery. Sandy is the author of the Shadow Reader series. The most recent novel in the series is The Sharpest Blade, which was published on December 31, 2013.

Interview with Sandy Williams, author of the Shadow Reader series - January 7, 2014

TQ:  Welcome back to The Qwillery. The Sharpest Blade, the 3rd novel in your Shadow Reader series, was published on December 31, 2013. What is the most challenging thing for you about writing? Has this changed from when you wrote Book 1 to Book 3?

Sandy:  My biggest problem is that I try to be a perfectionist on the first draft. I want every paragraph to be final draft quality before I move on, and I’ll often tweak and retweak and re-retweak the first chapter over and over again. That was okay when I wrote the first book, since I didn’t have any deadlines, but I have to learn to write a crappy first draft. I want to write more than one book a year. Heck, I want to write more than two books a year, so I’ve had to make changes to my process. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s getting better.

TQ:  What so you wish you'd known about publishing when The Shadow Reader (Book 1) came out that you know now?

Sandy:  Ha. It would take me ages to answer that question. Publishing has changed so much since I signed my first contract. All I knew back then was how to query an agent, and that publishing moved slowly, and even though I had an agent, that didn’t guarantee I’d get a book deal. In short, I knew nothing. I wasn’t educated on the business of publishing at all, although I thought I was. But in the last couple of years, self publishing has taken over, and self published writers have shared so much about the business side of writing. Even though I’m traditionally published, I’ve learned pretty much everything I know about publishing from those self published pioneers, and my view of the industry has changed dramatically. I’m still incredibly happy The Shadow Reader series is published by Ace (Penguin), but it’s nice to know that I don’t have to rely on New York to continue writing the books I love.

TQ:  Tell us something about The Sharpest Blade that is not in the book description.

Sandy:  McKenzie learns how to use a sword! Whew. So happy to get that out. I’ve had the scene where McKenzie learns how to use that pretty sword in my head since the first book. I tried to fit it in there, but it didn’t work with the story. It didn’t fit into the second book either. I’m so relieved I kept that scene and found the perfect place for it in the third book.

TQ:  In the series so far who was the easiest character to write and why? The hardest and why? Who is your favorite good guy, bad guy or ethically ambiguous character?

Sandy:  The easiest character to write in all three books was definitely McKenzie. Her voice comes easy to me, and I can picture myself in her shoes. The most difficult character to write has changed from book to book. In the first one, Lena was hard. In the last book, Aren became difficult. Of course, he’s in a difficult situation. It was just hard to keep him in that situation without him coming off as an ass. I hope I pulled it off!

TQ:  Which character has surprised you the most?

Sandy:  Lena. I despised her in the first book, especially in the draft I sent to my agent. My agent pointed out that she needed to be developed more - my agent was totally right - and after I did that, she grew on me. I didn’t ever expect to like her, but she’s become one of my favorite characters.

TQ:  Give us one of your favorite lines from The Sharpest Blade.

Sandy:  There are so many lines I love from The Sharpest Blade. It’s hard to pick just one. But I’ll go with one that’s toward the end of the book. In all of my books, I’ve had a reference to a fairytale. In the first book, it was during the wedding scene. McKenzie told Aren, “I’m not Cinderella at a ball.”

In the second book, the reference came during one of the flashbacks. When Kyol kisses her awake, McKenzie thinks, This must be how Snow White felt when her prince kissed away her sleep

The third book has a general reference to fairytales, and I love it so much. This isn’t how the fairytale goes. The prince kisses the princess not the other way around.

TQ:  What's next?

Sandy:  I hope my next published project is the urban fantasy in space (otherwise known as sci-fi romance) I’m working on. I’ve been dying to get back to this book ever since I sold The Shadow Reader. It has a kickass heroine, a hot and serious hero, and a ton of action and intrigue. I love it so much, and I think fans of urban fantasy and paranormal romance will, too.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Sandy:  Thank you so much for having me!

But when her best friend, Paige, disappears McKenzie knows her wish is, for now, just a dream. About Sandy

Interview with Sandy Williams, author of the Shadow Reader series - January 7, 2014
Sandy graduated from Texas A&M University with a double major in political science and history. She thought about attending law school. Fortunately, before handing over her life’s savings, she realized case studies weren’t nearly as interesting as novels and decided to get an MA in Library Science instead. She worked as a librarian until her husband whisked her off to London on an extended business trip. She’s now back home in Texas, writing full-time, raising twin boys, and squeezing in time to play geeky board and card games like Settlers of Catan, Dominion, and Runebound.

Question: Who is one of your favorite superheroes?

Jen B. who said...

I love Ironman. He is a superhero because he is smart (and stupid rich). But, and although he is technically classified as a superhero, I have to go with Dr. Who. I think he is just the ultimate superhero. He's smart, a little crazy, he's devoted and he always comes up with a way to do as little damage as possible.

Question:  Which character from novels, comics, movies, orTV shows do you find infuriating?

Texas Book Lover who said...

Bill from the True Blood show and books is one of the most infuriating characters I can think of. The books and shows have really digressed lately. I will tough out the last book but if Sookie ends up with Bill I will probably want to tear the book to pieces and for me that is totally sacrilegious.

I have to agree that Lori from The Walking Dead is really bad too. I'm kinda hoping the baby is a zombie and kills her during childbirth and I am normally not a mean or morbid person. Just love the show but am tired of her.

Question:  What’s your favorite kind of boot? What sort of boot do you want your heroes to wear?

Sheree who said...

I just want comfortable boots. I have fancier ones with stiletto heels but those hurt after a while and even my sturdier ones really aren't made for walking in (maybe they'd be okay for riding in).

As for heroes, anything they can walk in, I suppose. Nothing too fancy but functionality is a must - kind of how I like my men. ;)

McKenzie Lewis and Aren from Sandy Williams' McKenzie Lewis Series Stop By & Giveaway - October 24, 2012

Please welcome McKenzie Lewis and Aren from the McKenzie Lewis series by Sandy Williams. The Shattered Dark (McKenzie Lewis 2) will be published on October 30, 2012.

McKenzie Lewis and Aren from Sandy Williams' McKenzie Lewis Series Stop By & Giveaway - October 24, 2012

TQ:  Good day, McKenzie and Aren. I’m very pleased to have you virtually visit The Qwillery today. Would you each tell us a bit about yourself?

McKenzie:  Thanks for having us. I’m McKenzie Lewis, a college student - or rather, a former college student now. I was getting a degree in English until he came along.

Aren*sexy half-grin*

McKenzie:  There’s not too much to say about myself. I’m pretty much a normal human except-

Aren:  *snorts*

McKenzie:  *glares at Aren* I would be normal except the fact that I can see and track fae. I’m a shadow-reader. Fae have the ability to travel through fissures, which are vertical slashes of white light that rip through the atmosphere. When they disappear, they leave behind shadows that twist and turn and morph into different landscapes. I draw these shadows down on paper, show them to a fae, then name the location. When I do, fae are able to fissure to that spot. That’s really the only thing that’s special about me.

Aren:  McKenzie doesn’t give herself enough credit. Even if she couldn’t see or track us, she’d be unique. She’s selfless - too selfless in my opinion. She needs to put her needs before everyone else’s more often. She doesn’t because she’s loyal, and she won’t abandon her friends if she can help them.

McKenzie:  You’re supposed to be introducing yourself.

Aren:  I prefer talking about you.

McKenzie:  Aren.

Aren:  *shrugs* I’m Aren. I helped the rebels fight the king’s fae for the last few years. McKenzie here was a thorn in our side until I coaxed her into joining us.

McKenzie:  Coaxed? You kidnapped me.

Aren:  I was supposed to kill you.

TQ:  What one word would you use to describe Aren?

McKenzie:  Infuriating.

TQ:  Aren, your turn. What one word would you use to describe McKenzie?

Aren:  *grins* Enchanting.

TQ:  Tell us something about your latest adventure, The Shattered Dark, that is not in the book description.

McKenzie:  I made a lot of decisions in the first book. I have to deal with those in The Shattered Dark. I learn more about Aren, and some of the things he’s done are hard for me to accept.

TQ:  So…has your author been kind to you?

McKenzie:  No!

Aren:  I met McKenzie. The last few months have been difficult, but I wouldn’t change a thing about them because they led me to her.

TQ:  Can you let us in one what your author is up to next?

McKenzie:  I hope she’s stabilizing the Realm. I’m tired of war. I want a chance at a halfway normal life, and I want the people I care about to be safe. I don’t think that’s asking for too much.

Aren:  I hope for the same thing. McKenzie deserves a rest. She deserves to be happy.

TQ:  Thank you both for joining us today, and thank you to Sandy Williams!

McKenzie Lewis and Aren from Sandy Williams' McKenzie Lewis Series Stop By & Giveaway - October 24, 2012
McKenzie Lewis has a gift. It allows her access to a world few have seen, and even fewer can comprehend. It’s her secret. And it exists in the shadows…

McKenzie was a normal college student, save for one little twist: she’s a shadow reader, someone who can both see the fae and track their movements between our world and the Realm. It’s a gift for which she has been called insane, one for which she has risked family and friends—and one that has now plunged her into a brutal civil war between the fae.

With the reign of the king and his vicious general at an end, McKenzie hoped to live a more normal life while exploring her new relationship with Aren, the rebel fae who has captured her heart. But when her best friend, Paige, disappears McKenzie knows her wish is, for now, just a dream. McKenzie is the only one who can rescue her friend, but if she’s not careful, her decisions could cost the lives of everyone she’s tried so hard to save.

Interview with Sandy Williams and Giveaway - October 20, 2011

Please welcome Sandy Williams to The Qwillery as part of the 2011 Debut Author Challenge interviews. The Shadow Reader, Sandy's debut novel, will be published on October 25, 2011 by Ace.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Sandy:  My most interesting writing quirk? I think it might be that I don’t have a writing quirk. Well, unless you count my Diet Coke addiction. I can function without coffee. I can function without chocolate. But I absolutely cannot function without a Diet Coke (or two!) a day.

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Sandy:  I’m pretty sure I’ve been influenced by every author I’ve read, but the ones who have made the biggest impact on my writing are the ones that I worship. Ann Aguirre and Linnea Sinclair top my list of favorites. They both have books that are the perfect blend of science fiction and romance (I’m a huge fan of genre blending!). I’m also deeply in love with the works of Meredith Duran and Joanna Bourne. They both write historical romance, and they’re both absolutely brilliant. As for urban fantasy writers, I have Patricia Briggs, Kim Harrison, and Richelle Mead on auto-buy.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Sandy:  I’d like to call myself a pantser. That’s how I’ve written all my books so far. I didn’t outline The Shadow Reader or any of my previous projects. I started off with a few scenes in mind and had absolutely no idea how I was going to get my characters from here to there. That’s starting to change, though. Once you get a book contract, editors and agents kind of want to know what’s going to happen next, so I had to come up with a vague outline for book two. I have to say, I don’t hate knowing what’s going to happen as much as I thought I would. Really, the biggest difference is that I now write down all those random scenes I have in my head before I start a project.

TQ:  Describe The Shadow Reader in 140 characters or less.

Sandy:  A human with the ability to see and track the fae becomes a pawn in a fae civil war.

TQ:  What inspired you to write The Shadow Reader?

Sandy:  I had a scene in my head. Somebody attacked a space station, and a girl was hanging onto the edge of a metal platform. It was all fire and death and bad stuff beneath her, and the only way she could save her life was to accept help from her enemy. I had this one very vivid image of a man offering the girl his hand to pull her up, and the girl telling him to go to hell. Yep, that’s right. I thought that scene was going to be in a sci-fi book, but when I sat down to write it, it turned into an urban fantasy. I’m so glad it did! It’s one of my favorite scenes in the book, and you’ll recognize it toward the end of the first chapter, which you can read here.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for The Shadow Reader?

Sandy:  Do you count tying sheets together to see how far they stretch research? If so, that’s just about all I did. I had to know if it was feasible to climb down from a third story window with a few ripped sheets.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Sandy:  McKenzie was an easy character to write. Her voice came naturally to me. She was also the hardest, though, especially toward the end. I was extremely paranoid she was going to come off as wishy-washy. I hope I wrote her well enough that she doesn’t!

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in The Shadow Reader?

Sandy:  The first chapter scene I mentioned above. I love the interaction there between McKenzie and Aren. Plus, it’s the scene that gave birth to the entire story. It’s definitely a favorite. Also a favorite? The wedding scene. Page 168 to be exact.

TQ:  How many books are planned for the McKenzie Lewis series?

Sandy:  Right now, I’ve only sold the second book. I’m hoping to make her current story arc a trilogy, though, and depending on how things go, I can see me writing other stories set in this world.

TQ:  What's next?

Sandy:  I’m really looking forward to next year! I’ll have the sequel finished and (hopefully) a third book completed soon as well. I’d like to write about more characters in McKenzie’s world, maybe tell the story of how she first became involved with the fae. I’d also love to tell Naito and Kelia’s story. I do want to work on other, unrelated projects, though. I have this sci-fi romance I’m just dying to finish!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Sandy:  Thank you so much for having me!
