Interview with Sarah Gilman - Wings of Redemption Blog Tour - January 4, 2013

Please welcome Sarah Gilman to The Qwillery.  Wings of Redemption, a Return to Sanctuary novella, was published in December 2012.

Interview with Sarah Gilman - Wings of Redemption Blog Tour - January 4, 2013

TQ:  Welcome to The Qwillery!

Sarah:  Thanks so much for hosting today!

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Sarah:  I wish I had a really interesting writing quirk, but I don’t. I just type, pace around the house, type, pace, type, pace. I have gotten into the habit of baking bread while brainstorming! It’s amazing how many ideas you have when you’re up to your elbows in flour!

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Sarah:  Pantser, for sure! I always go into a story with the character’s goals, motivations, and conflicts in mind, but for me, nothing will stop productivity faster than attempting to write an outline. For Entangled books, I submit a synopsis before I write the manuscript, but that’s still a far cry from an outline.

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Sarah:  I struggle with light sensitivity and I can’t spend as much time in front of the computer as I’d like. I go as far as turning the screen light down and turning Microsoft Word pages gray or brown. I wish I could write on an “e-ink” screen.

TQ:  Describe Wings of Redemption in 140 characters or less. /like a Tweet/

Sarah:  Wings of Redemption is a story about two enemies redeeming themselves and finding a Happily Ever After with each other.

TQ:  What inspired you to write Wings of Redemption?

Sarah:  These characters grew organically from the existing series that revolves around fallen archangels and poachers. As a reader, I’m a huge fan of enemies-to-lovers romances and have wanted to write this sort of plotline from the get-go.

TQ:  Tell us something about Wings of Redemption that is not in the book description.

Sarah:  Kestrel, the archangel hero, has wings based on the American Kestrel: blue, black, and copper feathers.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for Wings of Redemption?

Sarah:  Most of my writing comes entirely from my imagination, but for this novella I did have some fact-checking to do. I knew the history and the language of Quebec going in, but I don’t live there and I needed to make sure everything I “knew” was correct.

As a French Canadian on my mother’s side of the family (a common heritage in Vermont), I knew that in Quebec, where this story is set, the culture has gone through some interesting changes in regards to religion. The mention of the Quiet Revolution in the book is based on fact—Catholicism lost some ground in Quebec in the last century. This is why French Canadian profanity—used in the book by the heroine—is based on religious words, as opposed to English and “French French,” which rely heavily on sexual words for vulgar language. In Quebec French, profane words literally translate to “chalice,” “host,” “baptism,” “ciborium,”etc.

I put a demon colony in Quebec in the first place because of this history and culture. The human perception of fallen angels and demons being evil—a religious viewpoint that would persist, I think, even if these creatures showed up in flesh and blood and had no idea what we were talking about--plays a crucial role in the world, so I wanted an open door to explore how relations between these beings and humans would differ in Quebec. I plan to develop this much more in future books.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Sarah:  Kestrel, the hero, was the easiest character to write. When I’m dealing with a paranormal character, my imagination takes over and I usually have too many ideas. With human characters, the heroine in this case, I battle having too few ideas. I’m honestly not sure why that is. I suppose it’s partially because I want to write fantasy, not things that could really happen. Bank robbery? Boring. A dragon destroying a bank? Now that’s interesting!

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Wings of Redemption?

Sarah:  When Kestrel shows Saffron a view of the demon the colony on their first flight together!

TQ:  What's next?

Sarah:  The first full-length novel in the Return to Sanctuary series, Out in Blue, is being re-released later this month in mass-market paperback! This new edition has some minor content changes and a brand-new cover!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Sarah:  Thank you so much!

Interview with Sarah Gilman - Wings of Redemption Blog Tour - January 4, 2013
Enemies by birth, lovers by choice...

Humans and archangels don’t mix on the best occasions. When Saffron Morin goes to the gates of the demon colony, Eden, in search of her sister, she meets an archangel who is curious one minute and hostile the next, and she ends up the colony’s “guest” against her will.

Kestrel’s archangel psychic talent tells him the human woman’s life is in danger. Despite her family’s association with poachers who hunt archangels for their valuable feathers, he vows to save her life. Enemies by birth, lovers by choice, they give in to growing attraction as days pass.

Even if he succeeds in saving her life, he must hurt her to protect others of his kind, and he may not be able to live with himself after a betrayal he has no choice but to commit. In order to find redemption, the Collector’s daughter and an archangel must first find each other.

Interview with Sarah Gilman - August 22, 2011

Please welcome Sarah Gilman to The Qwillery as part of the 2011 Debut Author Challenge Interviews.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Sarah:  Interesting, or crazy? *grin* Writing is often referred to as “socially acceptable schizophrenia.” Not only do my characters tell me their stories, they talk to me. They get grumpy and complain when I don’t make my word count goal for the day. Jett (the hero of book 2) and Wren (the hero of book 1) argue over which book is better. Yeah. *sigh*

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Sarah:  I have many favorite authors. One of my favorite all time authors is Charles Dickens. But of course, I can’t forget Robert L. Stevenson or Bram Stoker! In my own genre, I never miss a book from J.R. Ward, Jeaniene Frost, Michelle Rowen, Lara Adrian…the list goes on! They’ve all influenced my writing in some way, because when I get stuck, the best inspiration is to sit down and read.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Sarah:  I’m a pantser with a plan! I always have an overall goal, motivation, conflict, and resolution in mind before I sit down to write, but the ideas flow best when I’m chin deep in a scene. I tried writing outlines, I honestly tried. I think Out in Blue had seven outlines, but as soon as I started writing, I had a new idea!

TQ:  Describe Out in Blue in 140 characters or less.

Sarah:  A fast-paced, sensual paranormal romance set on the backdrop of a dark, violent world.

TQ:  What inspired you to write Out in Blue?

Sarah:  Apart from Wren moving into my gray-matter and ordering me to? *wink* I set out to write a novel because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but Wren was the epicenter of the story from the very first words I ever typed, and I sat down to write a ghost story! He improved as a character as I developed my craft, but he never changed in my mind’s eye, and he insisted his story be told.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for Out in Blue?

Sarah:  Most of the story came from my imagination, but I wanted the wings to have a realistic feel. No disappearing, no hovering, no magic, just wings that will knock over a lamp if the character isn’t careful. I’ve always been interested in birds, so most of my research had already been done. I love to watch how they move. I made a trip to VINS, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, which is a rehab center for raptors. There, I got to observe large birds up close, learn about the structure of a wing, etc.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Sarah:  Wren came naturally, as I mentioned above. But I found Ginger to be the biggest challenge. Like many romance readers, I have strong opinions about what makes a good and a bad heroine. A heroine needs to have strengths without being too perfect and flaws without being too unlikable. Creating a balanced heroine is much harder than it looks.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in the novel?

Sarah:  My favorite scene is set at the top of a broadcast tower. Not a setting I get to read or write everyday!

TQ:  Who should play Wren and Ginger if Out in Blue is made into a movie?

Sarah:  I’d love to see a brand new actor and actress get their start.

TQ:  How many books are planned for Return to Sanctuary series?

Sarah:  There are several planned, but I am a debut author, so the future is not set in stone. Keep your fingers crossed!

TQ:  What's next?

Sarah:  My primary goal is finishing book 2, Deep in Crimson, currently in the revision process. I also got that ghost story written, and am revising it as well. Ghost romances are a hard pitch, so wish me luck!

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Ready Player One
Author:  Ernest Cline
Format:  Hardcover, 384 pages
Publisher:  Crown (August 16, 2011)
Price:  $24.00
Language:  English
Genre:  Science Fiction
ISBN:  978-0-307-88743-6

2011 Debut Author Challenge - August Debut Authors
At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.

And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.

And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.

Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?

In the forgotten back alleys and flophouses that lie in the shadows of Rigus, the finest city of the Thirteen Lands, you will find Low Town. It is an ugly place, and its champion is an ugly man. Disgraced intelligence agent. Forgotten war hero. Independent drug dealer. After a fall from grace five years ago, a man known as the Warden leads a life of crime, addicted to cheap violence and expensive drugs. Every day is a constant hustle to find new customers and protect his turf from low-life competition like Tancred the Harelip and Ling Chi, the enigmatic crime lord of the heathens.

The Warden’s life of drugged iniquity is shaken by his discovery of a murdered child down a dead-end street . . . setting him on a collision course with the life he left behind. As a former agent with Black House—the secret police—he knows better than anyone that murder in Low Town is an everyday thing, the kind of crime that doesn’t get investigated. To protect his home, he will take part in a dangerous game of deception between underworld bosses and the psychotic head of Black House, but the truth is far darker than he imagines. In Low Town, no one can be trusted.

Daniel Polansky has crafted a thrilling novel steeped in noir sensibilities and relentless action, and set in an original world of stunning imagination, leading to a gut-wrenching, unforeseeable conclusion. Low Town is an attention-grabbing debut that will leave readers riveted . . . and hungry for more.

Dev is a smuggler with the perfect cover. He's in high demand as a guide for the caravans that carry legitimate goods from the city of Ninavel into the country of Alathia. The route through the Whitefire Mountains is treacherous, and Dev is one of the few climbers who knows how to cross them safely. With his skill and connections, it's easy enough to slip contraband charms from Ninavel--where any magic is fair game, no matter how dark--into Alathia, where most magic is outlawed.

But smuggling a few charms is one thing; smuggling a person through the warded Alathian border is near suicidal. Having made a promise to a dying friend, Dev is forced to take on a singularly dangerous cargo: Kiran. A young apprentice on the run from one of the most powerful mages in Ninavel, Kiran is desperate enough to pay a fortune to sneak into a country where discovery means certain execution--and he'll do whatever it takes to prevent Dev from finding out the terrible truth behind his getaway.

Yet the young mage is not the only one harboring a deadly secret. Caught up in a web of subterfuge and dark magic, Dev and Kiran must find a way to trust each other--or face not only their own destruction, but that of the entire city of Ninavel.

Deep beneath the Egyptian sands, an ancient and evil song written in hieroglyphics is discovered in the long lost and buried pyramid of the demonic pharaoh, Aknaseth. It is written, that if this song is performed for the world to hear, it will unleash the Apocalypse upon the world of man…Satan will reign and grant immortality to the chosen.

With the help of abominable Egyptologist, Helmut Hartkopff, nihilistic multibillionaire, Festus Baustone the Third will do whatever it takes to bring the song to life at any cost- even if his only daughter is to be sacrificed.

Kirk Vaisto, dubbed the “God of Guitar” by his millions of fans, soon finds himself caught between the forces of divine good and monumental evil. Vaisto begins a musical journey that takes him from an unholy chapter in ancient Egyptian history to the very remains of the Holy Cross, to the concert stage, and beyond all this, to the very edge of Hell itself.

Will Kirk give the performance of a lifetime and either deliver our world from evil…or will he annihilate us all with the stroke of his hand?

What will happen when Kirk Vasito strikes The Armageddon Chord?
