Excerpt
(from Chapter One)

Danny shook his head. “No. He mistook them for Mafia, but I think at best they’re vamps with Mafia ties. There’s this female among them that seems fixated on my father. I think she’s been drinking from him. It’s odd. She’s odd. The whole thing is . . . odd.
Shayna grimaced. “You mean aside from her drinking blood?”
Danny tried to stand. “Yeah. I don’t know if vampires can be mentally ill. From what I’ve researched so far, they’re immune to diseases. But nothing I’ve read mentions anything about being immune to insanity.”
I steadied him with my hand. “Why have you been reading up on vamps? I mean, I know since you’ve learned about us, you’ve been curious, but . . . I’m not a vampire.”
He sighed, watching me with his dark sad eyes. “Believe it or not, I thought I could help you. You and your sisters have something special.”
“Ah, no, we don’t.” Taran glared his way. “At best we’re atom bombs ready to detonate.” As if to make a point, a puff of blue and white smoke from her fire popped and sizzled above her head.
Danny returned the glasses to his face. “I don’t agree. There’re not a lot of books available here in the U.S. about the supernatural―the real kind, I mean―weres, witches, vamps, those types of beings. But I’ve purchased a few ancient volumes from old libraries in Europe, where most legends stem from actual truths. I haven’t been able to find much about what you are or what you could be. In fact, I’m positive you’re different from any race of humans or preternaturals on earth.”
       “Yay for us,” Taran muttered.
Danny offered a sympathetic smile. “One thing I have learned a great deal about are curses and magic in general.” His gaze skipped to each one of us. “I think you’re all in a bind.”
“No shit,” Taran snapped. “I’m surprised we haven’t killed each other.”
Danny held out a hand. “No, that’s not what I mean. I think you’ve been bound―in the magical sense. Sort of like a noose or tie that holds your powers back, and therefore your control.” He focused on me. “Celia, I think you can manage your powers best because your tigress gives you added strength. Picture a pit bull on a leash. You’re going to pull harder against it than another, smaller breed, making it harder to hold you back.”
Shayna inched forward. “Um, Danny, maybe you should watch the dog references. I understand what you’re trying to say, but Taran’s a little touchier.” She motioned to Taran with a jerk of her head. “Know what I mean, little guy?”
Taran narrowed her eyes, proving Shayna’s point.
Danny’s mouth popped open. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to insult you, ladies.”
I barely heard his apologies, my ears homing in on the rumble of motors. Two cars entered the dead-end street leading to the field and to us. The roar of their engines didn’t sound familiar or appropriate for the area. We were in blue-collar territory and these vehicles were definitely not your standard beaters. And instead of slowing down when they entered the narrow street, they sped faster, like cheetahs who’d found a herd of wounded gazelles.
My tigress growled a warning. Taran’s blue eyes blanched to white, her magic sensing another’s approach.
Danny jerked around upon seeing the first car barrel up the small incline. “It’s the vampires. Run!

Excerpt from A Curse Awakened by Cecy Robson - August 29, 2014
Discover Cecy Robson’s sensational Weird Girls series—or return to where the magic first began—with this eBook original prequel novella about four sisters coming to grips with their unique supernatural powers.

Celia Wird shouldn’t possess the ability to transform into a tigress. Her three sisters should never be able to burst into flames, heal wounds, or transform common objects into deadly weapons. And yet they do.

Before they were born, the Wird Sisters were cursed by a spell that was intended to destroy them, not endow them with extraordinary powers. The sisters’ magic is untamed and explosive at best, and time is running out for them to take command.

Vampires have targeted Celia’s sweet, tragically human ex-boyfriend Danny. The sisters rush to his aid, but in order to take down the vamps, first they must face their dark past and break a spell that’s screwing up their powers. Except this curse wasn’t meant to be broken . . . and the witch who cast it isn’t done toying with them yet.

Qwill's Thoughts

Strap yourself in and get ready for a wild ride as you meet the Wird sisters in this prequel novella to the the Weird Girls series. Cecy Robson walks on the dark side with this after the fact series opener. I'm not going to say much about about the story itself (you can read the description above). This is an extremely fun, somewhat gory, introduction to the sisters, their powers, their background, and Danny!

The novella moves at an extremely fast pace, with crisp and descriptive writing. I really enjoyed this prequel. Robson packs a lot into this novella so if you've never met the Wird sisters A Curse Awakened is a great place to start. However, no matter where you are in the series, this is a must read.

Qwill's Thoughts:

A Cursed Moon is the latest novella in Cecy Robson's Urban Fantasy Romance series Weird Girls. The novella focuses on Bren, a lone wolf who is trying out pack life again. This is the kind of novella I love to read. It is filled with familiar characters, there is plenty of action, some humor, and it moves the series along. Bren can be amusingly abrasive in his human form. As a werewolf, this lone wolf, is extremely dangerous. He's been on his own without a pack for a long time. Now he has a chance to be part of a pack again, which is not easy going. Bren is extremely loyal to Celia Wird, so being around Aric (her ex) just brings out his natural wiseassery.

Bren's interactions with Celia and others that he is close to show his true nature. The more I learned about Bren in A Cursed Moon the more I liked him. The novella is not all about emotion, though emotion plays a very important roll in Bren's story. There is plenty of action as Bren and Celia take on some really creepy ghosts. Bren is definitely a great werewolf to have at your side in a battle and as a friend.

A Cursed Moon can be read alone without having read the prior books (though you should!).  Ms. Robson gives enough of the backstory of the series so that the novella is understandable without overwhelming Bren's story. As with all of the Weird Sisters novels there is a strong ensemble of characters, the writing is enjoyable and the pacing terrific.

I'm looking forward to seeing both more of Bren in future novels in the series and where the events in A Cursed Moon lead the Wird sisters and Aric's pack.

Interview with Cecy Robson, author of Sealed with a Curse - December 6, 2012

TQ:  Welcome to The Qwillery!

Cecy:  Hello, Sally. Thank you for having me!

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Cecy:  That would be acting out my action scenes. My husband has walked in on me throwing myself on the floor more than once. He once helped me work out a scene where my protagonist, Celia, impales a vampire with a fence post. My husband really got into playing the role of the vampire.

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Cecy:  I have a non-sexual crush on Harry Dresden, therefore Jim Butcher is one of my favs. I love Mercy Thompson’s trials and tribulations―Patricia Briggs really knows how to write beautiful pain. I also just started reading Karen Marie Moning. The woman is amazing. My greatest influence comes from my love of the Urban Fantasy genre.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Cecy:  I used to be a panster. The problem was my over-active imagination kicked into high gear and I’d forget all about the important things like the plot. ; )

TQ:  What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?

Cecy:  Probably finding the time and quiet. I currently work as a labor nurse and I’m also a mother of three busy children.

TQ:  Describe Sealed with a Curse in 140 characters or less.

Cecy:  One backfired curse. Four unique sisters. The supernatural world is about to get body-slammed.

TQ:  What inspired you to write Sealed with a Curse?

Cecy:  Heh, heh, heh. My editor at Penguin, Jhanteigh Kupihea. When my agent submitted the original WEIRD GIRLS novel, she felt too much happened and suggested I take the first three chapters and make that my new book one. That novel turned into SEALED WITH A CURSE.

TQ:  What sort of research did you do for Sealed with a Curse?

Cecy:  I had to learn a great deal about Lake Tahoe region since I’ve never been there―the weather, environment, area restaurants, and tourist attractions. It sounds like a beautiful area.

TQ:  Tell us something about Sealed with a Curse that is not in the book description.

Cecy:  The girls are half Latina, half Caucasian, and the cast is multi-cultural.

TQ:  Who was the easiest character to write and why? Hardest and why?

Cecy:  Celia is the easiest because I’ve written almost four and a half books about her―so I’ve been in her “head” the most. Gemini, my Japanese werewolf, is probably the hardest since he’s the strong silent type and his creator tends to be a yapper.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in Sealed with a Curse?

Cecy:  I think I have to say when the girls get a strong dose of what’s happening and finally decide to get involved. It’s a beautiful / sad / tense moment with just them that highlights their fears and love for each other.

TQ:  What's next?

Cecy:  A CURSED EMBRACE releases on July 2nd, followed by CURSED BY DESTINY in January 2014. I’m rewriting A CURSED BLOODLINE, Celia’s fourth novel. If the series does well, I’m hoping WEIRD GIRLS, Book 5, will be Taran’s book. I’ve also just written a proposal for my OLD ERTH series, a high fantasy category romance my agent will be shopping soon.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Cecy:  Thank you, Sally. You’re always so gracious.

Bedtime Tales

Being of Latin descent, I’m über superstitious. Ghosts, check. Chupa Cabra, check. Headless Horseman, check. Bigfoot? Well, I’m still up in the air about that one, but given I live in the Great Northwest, I’ll give that one a check just in case. Best not to anger a big, hairy being capable of tearing me limb from limb.

My father, instead of telling me there’s no such things as ghosts, fed my insane superstitions or sense of creativity, however you prefer to call it. When I was about seven, he told me that if he died, and his ghost returned from the dead, that I shouldn’t be afraid. Of course I bawled like any seven year-old would. Call me crazy, but the idea of my dead father coming back to haunt me had that effect. He stopped my tears by promising his ghost would only arrive to tell me where treasure was buried. I believed him then, now, not so much . . .

Most children heard “Billy Goats Gruff” or “Ferdinand the Bull” right before bed. I heard “La Llorona” the tale of a dead woman calling out and searching for her equally dead children. Gracia, Papí, and special thanks for the goodnight kisses with the glow-in-the-dark vampire fangs for the full, “I’m scarred for life” result.

The stories didn’t change as I grew older. Instead, they began to creep into my reality. We were visiting a relative in California when I was about fifteen. Before I could step foot in her trailer, my father clasped my arm and said, “Try not to piss her off. She’s a witch, and she doesn’t like you. I don’t want her putting a curse on you.” He walked in ahead of me. It took me several heart-pounding minutes to join him. I proceeded to spend the next two hours refusing to speak, eat, or drink anything in said supposed witch’s home.

While I didn’t get the “whammy,” the encounter, the stories, and the too many bumps I heard at night triggered and fueled my imagination. I didn’t find an outlet for the virtual potpourri of bizarro dreams or strange ideas until I began writing my Urban Fantasy Romance Series, WEIRD GIRLS.

WEIRD GIRLS is about four, very unique sisters who obtain their magical abilities as a result of a curse cast upon their Latin mother for marrying outside her race. Except the curse backfired, and instead of harming the girls, it bestowed them remarkable traits, making them different from any race of human, vampire, witch, or werebeast on earth. And although the sisters have perceived their powers as maledictions instead of gifts, these rare abilities help them combat the supernasties of Lake Tahoe once they’re “outed” to the mystical community.

I hope readers will see that while my childhood doesn’t portray a Norman Rockwell portrait, and perhaps my father should have used more discretion when choosing bedtimes tales, in the end my experiences and influences helped me to create a series filled with distinct characters, graphic and intense fight scenes, twisted humor, and launched the WEIRD GIRLS’ incredible journey.

Thank you for your time. If you’ll excuse me, my children are waiting with the lights on to hear a story. *slaps on vampire fangs*

When human society is no longer an option for them, they move in among the resident vampires, werebeasts, and witches of the Lake Tahoe region. Could this be the true home they’ve longed for? Um, not quite. After the sisters accidentally strip a witch of her powers in a bar brawl, they soon realize the mistake will cost them. Because to take on a witch means to take on her coven. And losing the battle isn’t an option.

Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls—with one tiny exception: they're products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, weird…

The Wird sisters are content to avoid the local vampires, werebeasts, and witches of the Lake Tahoe region—until one of them blows up a vampire in self-defense. Everyone knows vampires aren't aggressive, and killing one is punishable by death. But soon more bloodlust-fueled attacks occur, and the community wonders: are the vampires of Tahoe cursed with a plague?

Celia reluctantly agrees to help Misha, the handsome leader of an infected vampire family. But Aric, the head of the werewolf pack determined to destroy Misha's family to keep the region safe, warns Celia to stay out of the fight. Caught between two hot alphas, Celia must find a way to please everyone, save everyone, and oh yeah, not lose her heart to the wrong guy—or die a miserable death. Because now that the evil behind the plague knows who Celia is, it’s coming for her and her sisters. This Wird girl has never had it so tough.

About Cecy

Cecy (pronounced Sessy) Robson is an author with Penguin's SIGNET ECLIPSE. She attributes her passion for story-telling back to the rough New Jersey neighborhood she was raised in. As a child, she was rarely allowed to leave the safety of her house and passed her time fantasizing about flying, fairies, and things that go bump in the night. Her dad unwittingly encouraged Cecy's creativity by kissing her goodnight wearing vampire fangs. Gifted and cursed with an overactive imagination, she began writing her Urban Fantasy Romance Series, Weird Girls, in May 2009. THE WEIRD GIRLS: A Novella, debuts December 4, 2012 followed by SEALED WITH A CURSE, December 31, 2012, and A CURSE EMBRACED, July 2, 2013.
