Spotlight on a Shadow
by Erin Kellison

First, a huge thank you to Sally for having me here today. I’m celebrating the release of Shadow Play, the second e-novella installment in my Shadow Touch novella series. And I’m offering a $25 gift card to a random commenter who answers the question below.

While I was writing Shadow Fall, the second book in my Shadow series, I had an idea for a heroine I later named Eleanor Russo. She grew up a shut-in and is basically terrified of the world (and herself) because her shadow can move, speak, and act independently of her flesh and blood body. The shadow is the most primal part of Ellie, the part that has no shame, cannot lie, and is instinct personified. She is the id (think Freud) and will do what she must to survive.

If my shadow could do all that, I’d be in a lot of trouble. I think I’m a pretty peace-loving person, but I do contemplate murder all the time (for my stories, and yeah, okay, the occasional person who ticks me off). And I’m generally truthful, except when I’m not. And no one except my husband is very aware of my libidinous side. Okay, maybe my readers might guess about that. My point is, on the surface, I’m just like everyone else. And underneath… well, I think I’m just like everyone else there too. And so is Ellie, except her dark side roams freely while the rest of her has to contend with the aftermath.

I wondered… what if the dark side was stronger than the thinking part that’s supposed to control it? And wouldn’t it be cool to write the character arc of the person finally mastering her dark side and kicking the crap out of bad guys at the same time?

I loved the idea of the character, but I ended up writing a different book (Shadowman). Around that time, I was contracted to write a novella in my Shadow series. I knew instantly that it would feature Ellie and would introduce Dr. Cameron Kalamos as well, her love interest (I get giddy thinking about his character too).

That novella became Shadow Touch, the first in my Shadow Touch series in which Ellie Russo goes to the Segue Institute for help. It’s a last-ditch effort, an act of desperation. She doesn’t exactly get what she wants from Segue (and Dr. Kalamos), but it’s enough to keep her alive, and her shadow (somewhat) in check.

Shadow Touch wasn’t enough for me. Once I had written Ellie and Cam, I knew I had to continue their story. Their arcs were conceived for a full novel, and that’s ultimately what I wanted to do. My publisher was fantastic and agreed to three more novellas to complete Ellie’s story. The second, Shadow Play, was just released. I’m working on Shadow Hunt right now (bwahahaha) and am looking forward to the final installment, Shadow Untitled (catchy, huh?).

Each story stands alone, with a romantic arc connecting the four. And ALSO, the novella series bridges my original Shadow series and the Shadow Kissed series (a spin-off), which debuts with Fire Kissed on July 3.

Here’s the blurb for Shadow Play:

Interview with Erin Kellison and Giveaway - September 8, 2011

Please welcome Erin Kellison to The Qwillery.

Erin:  First of all, a huge thank you to Sally for hosting me here today to help celebrate the release of the third book in my Shadow series, Shadowman. Thanks to everyone for stopping by. Leave a comment for a chance to get all three books in the series: Shadow Bound, Shadow Fall, and Shadowman.

TQShadowman is the 3rd novel in the Shadow series, how have the Shadowlands surprised you since the 1st novel, Shadow Bound?

Erin:  The Shadowlands, or Twilight, has always been my story wild card. I can do whatever I want with it. I’m able to exceed the physics of the mundane world and dive into pure fantasy. BUT, I was completely surprised by how Shadowman perceives that realm.

TQ:  In the Shadow series, which character has surprised you the most?

Erin:  Zoe. I had no idea at the outset that I would use, like, and relate to her so much. She’s a wreck in this book because she’s undergoing a massive character change. She’s very real, very angry, very raw, and I love every moment she’s on the page.

TQ:  Please tell us about The Segue Institute.

Erin:  The Segue Institute is dedicated to the research and understanding of paranormal phenomena arising from the influx of Shadow into the world.

For more information, visit www.SegueInstitute.com for current research projects, personnel, and updates on wraith attacks globally.

TQ:  Describe Shadowman (Shadow 3) in 140 characters or less.

Erin:  Curses, this is hard.

Death builds a gate to Hell to find his love, but she finds him first. A devil is loosed and angels ready for war. All Hell breaks loose.

TQ:  In Shadowman, who was the most difficult character to write and why? Easiest and why?

Erin:  Shadowman was the most difficult! He’s made out of Shadow (magic), and so every aspect of touch and movement had to be re-imagined. And since he’s fae, he has no human sensibilities. I had to step out of myself to make sure his reactions and motivations worked. I had to make an abstraction, Death, a multi-layered character.

Easiest? Rose Anne Petty, psychopath and escapee from Hell. Usually I work on a character a bit before they completely gel both in my mind and with the story. I did not revise a single scene featuring the murderous Rose. I don’t want to think about what that says about me. I can say I had a hell of a lot of fun.

TQ:  The Shadow series is what I would call paranormal romantic suspense. Are there any other genres in which you'd like to write?

Erin:  I love where I’m writing now, but I can also easily see myself going a little more urban fantasy, horror (which is what I started writing), and for a little bit of split personality, sometimes I’d like to kick around a historical romance (medieval). And I’m also working on a YA (in the paranormal romantic suspense subgenre).

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Shadow series? Will there be more novellas?

Erin:  I’m working on the fourth book now, Shadow Fire, which has a release date of July 2012. And I’m contracted for a fifth beyond that. And yes! There will be three more novellas continuing the story I began in Shadow Touch, with characters Cam and Ellie returning.

TQ:  What's next?

Erin:  I’m preparing to dive into part II of Cam and Ellie’s story. I enjoy the novella length, which surprises me because I’d love to write longer books. (What I wouldn’t give to write a 500 page book!) And I’ll be jumping into book five of my Shadow series as well.

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

Guest Blog: Coffee with Heroines of #Dark Tour & Giveaway - June 9, 2011

The Qwillery is the 6th stop on the #Dark Tour By Erin Kellison and Laurie London. Erin and Laurie are celebrating the releases of new e-novellas: Shadow Touch by Erin and Hidden by Blood by Laurie. Let's listen in as their heroines have coffee.

Guest Blog: Coffee with Heroines of #Dark Tour & Giveaway - June 9, 2011

Coffee with Heroines of #DarkTour

Welcome to #DarkTour, and a big thank you to Sally for hosting us. Laurie London and I have got great prizes to give away— Shadow Bound (book 1 in my Shadow series), Bonded by Blood (book 1 in Laurie’s Sweetblood series), and a bonus book, Ascension, by author Caris Roane. We’ll also be adding bookmarks and romance trading cards to the package. Good, yes? Enter to win by answering the question below.

Today we are spotlighting the heroines of the Shadow and Sweetblood series. To start, Brenna, the heroine of Hidden by Blood, has met up with Ellie, from Shadow Touch, for a coffee and a get-to-know you chat to prepare for #DarkTour.

Brenna tries to keep her gaze on Ellie, but can’t help looking over at Ellie’s nude, disembodied shadow, who is glaring at her. “So,” Brenna asks smiling, “uhh…what’s up with the shadow?”

Ellie glances at her dark self, who is curled on a seat at another table, clearly distrustful of Brenna. Ellie hopes Brenna doesn’t notice that her shadow is on edge, ready to attack, if necessary.

Ellie smiles back, shrugging. “She senses that something is unusual about you, but since I’m split in two, I can’t exactly point any fingers, can I?” Ellie laughs nervously. “My shadow is my deep self, kinda like a Freudian id. Passions and instinct control her. And she’s getting stronger every day.”

Brenna leans forward, sympathetic. “That must be very…”

“… embarrassing?” Ellie interrupts. It’s so much more than that, but impossible to explain to a stranger. Instead, Ellie quips, “You should see her around attractive men. And if she senses I’m in danger…”

Her shadow hisses at Brenna.

“…then she will defend me,” Ellie finishes. “It’s happened before. No one knows, not even me, what she’s capable of.”

“I’m capable of anything,” her shadow says, gaze never leaving Brenna.

Ellie closes her eyes for patience. “I don’t mean that to sound threatening, it’s just…she obviously can tell that you are dangerous in your own right.”

Brenna smiles. “I suppose I am. But you have nothing to worry about.”

Ellie knows Brenna’s telling the truth, because her shadow settles back on her seat, though her glare is just as fierce. “Anyway, I’m determined to put an end to it,” Ellis says, “which is why I’m going to Segue. And I’m not leaving there until someone helps me.”

“What’s Segue?” Brenna asks.

Ellie picks up her coffee mug. Takes a sip. “It’s a paranormal research center. There’s a scientist there, Dr. Cameron Kalamos, who is investigating the unusual properties of shadows. He’s finally agreed to see me, though I’m pretty sure he’s not prepared for the likes of her.” Ellie darts a glance over at her dark self. “I think she’s only accompanying me because Dr. Kalamos is pretty cute.”

“Hot,” her shadow corrects.

Ellie sighs. “Yeah, okay. He’s hot. Anyway, enough about me. …

Brenna tears open a sugar packet, pours it slowly into her mug. “No, really, I don’t mind.”

“You...you don’t?” Ellie’s eyes go wide. “I figured she...we would totally freak you out.”

“Hardly. It’s refreshing, actually.” Brenna smiles as she stirs her latte. “I can totally relate to having a dark nature.”

“Seriously?”

“You’re not the only one with issues, Ellie. As a vampire, my dark nature is a part of me. I struggle with it daily. The urges, the compulsions.” Brenna glances at the shadow who looks ready to spring again. No doubt because the V word has been dropped. “Most of the time I manage pretty well. Working in the medical field like I do, you have to. But it’s especially difficult with one particular man. And yeah, he’s hot.”

“How do you manage?” Ellie glances over at her naked self. “I find it so...overwhelming at times.”

“I’m not saying it’s easy. If it was, no one would want to tell our stories.” Brenna sighs. “In my case, I try to avoid situations where I know I’m going to have...trouble.”

Brenna tenses, expecting some sort of reaction from the shadow, but the dark figure has just noticed the tatted up barista behind the counter.

“So, tell me about this guy,” Ellie prompts.

Brenna takes a sip of her latte and stares at her new friend over the rim. “Finn McKentry is a former Army Ranger who runs his own helicopter business. You know, sight-seeing, corporate outings, that sort of thing. He’s brash, bold, daring with just the faintest touch of a Scottish accent.”

“Mmmm, he does sound hot. So what’s the problem?”

Brenna sighs. “For one thing, he’s a human. But not only that, he’s also a sweetblood. It’s a rare blood type that’s extremely addictive to vampires. One taste and I won’t be able to stop. My dark nature will take over and I’ll kill him. Drain him of his blood and his energies.”

“His energies?” Ellie scowls. “I don’t understand.”

Brenna looks at the shadow who is now rubbing a hand suggestively over her hips as she stares at the barista. Wow, that would be hard to deal with day in and day out. Okay, she’d better be quick about this.

“Give me your hand.”

Ellie tentatively reaches out across the table. Brenna grabs her hand and a jolt of energy shoots up her arm before she lets go. “Did you feel that?”

Ellie looks at her palm, shakes her head.

“Many humans don’t,” Brenna explains. “Because vampires can’t get energy from ultra-violet light like you do, we need to absorb it through physical contact. Often, you’ll just feel tired afterwards. Like you didn’t sleep well. Or, as is the case for many people in the Northwest, you’ll feel as if you’re suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder and need sunlight.”

Ellie nods then waits a moment before asking, “So, what...ah...happened to the guy?”

Brenna stares into her cup. The heart design the barista had made in the foam is gone. All that is left is a stirred up mess.

“I broke up with him and told my dark self, never again.”

Interview with Erin Kellison and Giveaway - June 3, 2011

Please welcome Erin Kellison to The Qwillery.

First of all, thank you to Sally for hosting me here today at the Qwillery! Sally, you are awesome!

I’m giving away a full set of the Shadow series to one lucky commenter: Shadow Bound, Shadow Fall, and an ARC of Shadowman! Just answer the question below to enter.

TQ:  What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

Erin:  I have to be wearing only one sock and on my right foot. No, I’m kidding. I sit in my big green chair and I’ve got my snacks and drink, and then I work. No interesting quirks, I’m afraid. Oh! I am terrified of my webcam (it’s like the computer has an eye), so there’s a band-aid over it. I’ve blinded the beast.

TQ:  Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?

Erin:  I love Lois McMaster Bujold. Love her. And Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, and I’m totally sunk in George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones series. Love Patrick Rothfuss’ series as well. Read it. Charlaine Harris, of course. Karen Marie Moning is awesome. Sharon Shinn. Dean Koontz. Mercedes Lackey. Robin McKinley. There are so many that I could go on and on. I love to read.

Who has influenced my writing? All of them. My books have been good friends to me over the years. But I turn to Stephen King’s On Writing all the time for perspective. I highly recommend it.

TQ:  Are you a plotter or a panster?

Erin:  I am a combo, actually. I have a broad idea of where I am going, but the specifics are a mystery. If I plan too much, the spark just isn’t there. If I have no idea what comes next, I lose the story.

TQ:  Describe Shadow Touch in 140 characters or less.

Erin:  Ellie’s shadow has its own mind—it can kiss, touch…kill. Cam studies them, but the more he learns, the more he’s seduced. It’s all trouble.

TQ:  In your Shadow series, who was the easiest character to write and why? The most difficult and why?

Erin:  Tough question. The easiest was probably Adam Thorne, the hero of book one, Shadow Bound. I can’t say why, exactly. He’s a man with a purpose and a drive, and they are so strong within him that I didn’t have to tease them out on the page. The layers just seemed to come. The hardest was Ellie of Shadow Touch. She’s a character in two parts—human and disembodied shadow—so I had to be mindful of the goals and motivations of each, as well as how they differ and why. Ellie might have been the toughest, but I enjoyed writing her so much that I intend to do follow-up novellas that explore what comes next for her and her sweetheart, Cam.

TQ:  Without giving anything away, what it your favorite scene or scenes in Shadow Touch?

Erin:  Easy. When the aide comes. I had not expected to love that character so much. I’ll be writing more of him, too.

TQ:  Who should play Ellie Russo if Shadow Touch becomes a movie? Cameron Kalamos?

Erin:  These are always tough questions. I could see Mila Kunis playing Ellie—a mix of girl-next-door and sultry, just like Ellie and her shadow. Ian Somerhalder for Cam. The man has gorgeous eyes. Dreamy eyes. And so does Cam.

TQ:  What's the playlist for Shadow Touch?

Erin:  I am rotten at playlist questions because I write in silence. I’ve got a playground across the street and the squeaky teeter-totter drives me crazy. Something in a minor key with a good beat?

TQ:  How many books are planned for the Shadow series?

Erin:  Shadowman, book three, comes out this September. I’m currently writing book four (and having a lot of fun). And I am contracted for a fifth. I’ll also be expanding Ellie’s story into more novellas, each a stand-alone like the first. I can see the potential for more books, but that is up to fate right now.

TQ:  What's next?

Erin:  A couple of very cool things! First, I’m in the midst of the Shadow/Sweetblood blog tour (#DarkTour) and among other stops, will be back at The Qwillery next week with a fantastic giveaway. Find out more at www.erinkellison.com/appearances.

Also, I’ve just launched the Segue website (www.thesegueinstitute.com) which has all sorts of fun content including founder Adam Thorne’s blog (a running story I’m calling The Prophet), which will develop over the summer, a map of wraith activity, bios of characters, and much more. There are fun easter eggs hidden throughout, including ARCs of Shadowman (releases Sept 6). More prizes will be added as the site expands over the summer. Check it out.

Which brings me to… Shadowman! I am so very excited about the release of the third book in my Shadow series. Find out more here (http://www.erinkellison.com/books/shadowman.html) and preorder here at Amazon.com.

Okay, so here is the contest question: I love the HBO series A Game of Thrones. I’ve just finished the first book and I’m hooked. What book series would you like to see as a television series (or movie)?

TQ:  Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery!

The Qwillery is delighted to welcome Erin Kellison.

Leave it at the door, or The Otherworld

A very strange thing happens when a dancer walks into a dance studio. I imagine it’s the same when a runner puts on his running shoes or any other athlete steps from reality into ‘the zone.’ Dance studios are like that, and when I was a serious student, I’d been counseled by teachers, choreographers, and other dancers to leave whatever was going on in my life at the door. Nothing but dance existed in the studio. The place was very literally a different world, breached by that step from the hallway to the wood or Marley floor. That sense of transport always interested me, and with my fledgling writer’s sensibility, made me wonder.

The studio is an Otherworld, and within its space stories are created and enacted. You might think that a ballet comes to life on the stage, but for me it was always most compelling in the studio, sans costumes and make-up, when I could be so close I felt like I was inside a story. In the dance studio feet blister in pointe shoes, clothes become plastered with musky sweat, the very air is humid with the heat of creation. It’s a different experience altogether. And when the finished product finally hits the stage, I see a completely new world. If the magic is right, the spell mixed with careful precision, the audience is transported too.

All this has been simmering in my head from my dancing days, so when it came time to write a story that included the transition between reality and the fae Otherworld, I knew ballet would be my vehicle of choice. My heroine, Annabella, had to be a dancer, the ballet, Giselle—a ghosty story about two worlds.

There had to be one more element to make this all work: Annabella had to have talent. And what is talent but a pure magic? I know I had next to none when I was dancing, but I saw it in others. I could tell when the discrete movements of the ballet turned into story. Annabella had to have wild talent, the kind that creates legends. The kind that can capture and transport the audience along with the dancer.

Here comes my writer’s What If?: What if there really was an Otherworld that could be breached by talent? What if the ‘the zone’ took you halfway, and talent the rest? What if that place was filled with inspiration, dreams (and nightmares)? Could you cross? Would you? And what could leap into this world?

Here is an excerpt:

Giselle’s broken heart pulled her gaze to the dirt floor of the forest as she rose above from the freshly turned earth of her grave. She kept her hands folded on her breast, to hold the fragments of her love within her. Prince Albrecht would marry another, a royal lady, and not some peasant girl who knew nothing of the world. His betrayal killed her, yet she couldn’t help but love him still.

But she wasn’t a peasant girl any longer.

She was a wili, a ghost, and would dance forever.

Joining the host of other wilis caught in the midnight hush of the wood, Giselle tiptoed down the long diagonal sweep of dancers to bow to her wili queen, Myrtha.

Everything was as it should be, quiet and peaceful. Annabella’s body felt strong, ready for this moment, though a chill of anxiety had her nerves snapping. The sensation went beyond opening night jitters, beyond nerves, to fear.

On one side of her was the woodland backdrop; on the other, the black yawn of theater where the audience sat, voyeurs to Giselle’s tragic love story. Annabella looked up and strained her eyes beyond the side curtains of the stage: A bright angel stood beyond the false trees, his pale green gaze fixed on her. He was her hope, her protection. With him watching, her dance would be lighter, her heart would be lighter.

If Custo was near, she would be safe.

Giselle rose from her deep curtsy and began the series of arabesque turns that marked her advent into the Other. Heart hammering in her chest, she stirred the air, spun her magic, and reached for a world beyond her own.
