This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost - February 5, 2011

Jeaniene Frost posted a book trailer for This Side of the Grave at her blog yesterday. This Side of the Grave is the 5th book in the Night Huntress series and will be published on February 22, 2011. It's on my must by list.

Danger waits on both sides of the grave.

Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . .

With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

Prior books in the Night Huntress Series:

Halfway to the Grave, Book 1 (10/30/2007)

One Foot in the Grave, Book 2 (4/29/2008)

The View From Monday - January 31, 2011

January is almost over. It seems that it went by quickly... in between snow storms. There are a lot of books coming out tomorrow. There may be a New Release Tuesday Vlog this week. It's been hard to get books on release day lately though. The weather has been delaying shipments. So there may be a vlog, but maybe not on Tuesday. On February 1st, I will list the February Debut Authors that are part of the 2011 Debut Author Challenge. You have a lot to choose from in February.

On Wednesday, there will be some sort of giveaway. I haven't decided what though. We'll be surprised together. Thursday I'll write about comics, but no more about the True Blood collecting mania at least for now. On Friday, there will be photos. I may once again delve into the archive for sunny pretty pictures with no snow in them. There will also be some reviews scattered about during the week.

Here are this week's releases.

Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.

Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty—especially if they learn of her Sight—and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.

Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.

But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost—regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.

Faerie intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning 21st century faery tale.

If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow.

Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life.

The tattoo does bring changes—not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .

Songs of the Dying Earth
George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois
Hardcover, 672 pages
To honor the magnificent career of Jack Vance, one unparalleled in achievement and impact, George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois, with the full cooperation of Vance, his family, and his agents, have created a Jack Vance tribute anthology:Songs of the Dying Earth. The best of today's fantasy writers to return to the unique and evocative milieu of The Dying Earth, from which they and so many others have drawn so much inspiration, to create their own brand-new adventures in the world of Jack Vance’s greatest novel.

Half a century ago, Jack Vance created the world of the Dying Earth, and fantasy has never been the same. Now, for the first time ever, Jack has agreed to open this bizarre and darkly beautiful world to other fantasists, to play in as their very own. To say that other fantasy writers are excited by this prospect is a gross understatement; one has told us that he'd crawl through broken glass for the chance to write for the anthology, another that he'd gladly give up his right arm for the privilege. That's the kind of regard in which Jack Vance and The Dying Earth are held by generations of his peers.

This book contains original stories from George R. R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, Dan Simmons, Elizabeth Moon, Tanith Lee, Tad Williams, Kage Baker, and Robert Silverberg, along with fifteen others--as well as an introduction by Dean Koontz.

Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore--who just happens to be Jewish--to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way--a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny.

The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the other...the unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowing terror that man has inevitably awakened

The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire 1) - Book Trailer - November 17, 2010

I just saw this wonderful book trailer for The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire Book 1). I find it majestic. I can't wait to read the book (which I will be picking up tomorrow).

The Greyfriar is written by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith. The cover of the book was created by my favorite cover artist: Chris McGrath.

In the year 1870, a horrible plague of vampires swept over the northern regions of the world. Millions of humans were killed outright. Millions more died of disease and famine due to the havoc that followed. Within two years, once-great cities were shrouded by the gray empire of the vampire clans. Human refugees fled south to the tropics because vampires could not tolerate the constant heat there. They brought technology and a feverish drive to reestablish their shattered societies of steam and iron amid the mosques of Alexandria, the torrid quietude of Panama, or the green temples of Malaya.

It is now 2020 and a bloody reckoning is coming.

Princess Adele is heir to the Empire of Equatoria, a remnant of the old tropical British Empire. She is quick with her wit as well as with a sword or gun. She is eager for an adventure before she settles into a life of duty and political marriage to a man she does not know. But her quest turns black when she becomes the target of a merciless vampire clan. Her only protector is the Greyfriar, a mysterious hero who fights the vampires from deep within their territory. Their dangerous relationship plays out against an approaching war to the death between humankind and the vampire clans.

Vampire Empire: The Greyfriar is the first book in a trilogy of high adventure and alternate history. Combining rousing pulp action with steampunk style, Vampire Empire brings epic political themes to life within a story of heartbreaking romance, sacrifice, and heroism.

The View From Monday - October 25, 2010

It's Monday ... again. Halloween approaches so we'll have a Halloween related giveaway with an interview on Wednesday.  Tomorrow there are a lot of new releases (see below) so there will more than likely be a New Release Tuesday Vlog. I've posted some book trailers that I've found below the release list. What do you think about book trailers?

Thursday will be comics. Friday will be photos. Of course, most of this is subject to change depending on what I'm reading, interesting events, and pure whim. At this point, I believe there will be no blogging on the weekend. Saturday is the 88th birthday of someone near and dear to me. Sunday is Halloween. I still need to decorate. I haven't even picked up pumpkins yet or candy for the Trick or Treaters. Lots to do this week.
