End of Year Giveaway 3 - The Fever Series 1-4 by Karen Marie Moning

I initially had a hard time picking the books for my last end of the year giveaway. Once I thought about my most anticipated reads for 2011, it became easy. As many of you know the final book in the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning will be released on January 18, 2011. This is one of my all time favorite series. I loved her Highlander series, which is connected to the Fever series in ways I'm not all too clear about yet. I have questions upon questions, but like everyone else must wait until next month to get my answers. I'd like someone to join in the wait!

The Fever Series:

Darkfever
Format: Paperback, 384 pages
Publisher: Dell
Pub. Date: August 28, 2007
ISBN: 978-0-440-24098-3 (0-440-24098-0)

MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

From the Hardcover edition.

Vampire Crush
by A.M. Robinson
The View From Monday, Part 2 - December 27, 2010
I swear, my life was always totally normal.

Normal house, normal family, normal school. My looks are average, I don't have any superpowers, no one's showing up to tell me I'm a princess—you get the picture. But when my junior year started, something not normal happened. There were new kids at school . . . new kids with a wardrobe straight out of a 19th-century romance novel, and an inexplicable desire to stay at school until sundown.

And on top of that, James Hallowell showed up. James, who stole my sandwiches in fourth grade and teased me mercilessly through middle school. James, who now seems to have the power to make my heart race any time he comes near.

But something weird is going on. Because James rarely goes out during the day. And he seems stronger than your typical guy. And he knows the new kids, all of whom seem to be harboring some kind of deep secret. . . .

Once in a Full Moon
by Ellen Schreiber

Celeste Parker is used to hearing scary stories about werewolves—Legend's Run is famous for them. She's used to everything in the small town until Brandon Maddox moves to Legend's Run and Celeste finds herself immediately drawn to the handsome new student. But when, after an unnerving visit with a psychic, she encounters a pack of wolves and gorgeous, enigmatic Brandon, she must discover whether his transformation is more than legend or just a trick of the shadows in the moonlight.

Her best friends may never forgive her if she gives up her perfect boyfriend, Nash, for Brandon, who's from the wrong side of town. But she can't deny her attraction or the strong pull he has on her. Brandon may be Celeste's hero, or he may be the most dangerous creature she could encounter in the woods of Legend's Run.

Psychic predictions, generations-old secrets, a town divided, and the possibility of falling in love with a hot and heroic werewolf are the perfect formula for what happens . . . once in a full moon.

Depending on whether I get to a bookstore tomorrow, there may or may not be a New Release Tuesday Vlog. Wednesday will be the last of the End of Year Giveaways. The rest of the week will be a surprise for you and for me!

A Girl's Guide to Vampires
by Katie MacAlister
Dark Ones 1
(Reprint)
The View From Monday - December 27, 2010Joy Randall's Top 5 Tips for Vampire Hunters:
  • Location, location, location. Vampires won't be caught dead (ha!) in places like discos, ten-minute lube shops, or Switzerland. Remember, if you wouldn't be there, neither would a bloodsucker.
  • Trust your eyes. You know the handsome, annoyingly arrogant, self-assured man in the shadows with long hair and a cleft in his chin? He's your vampire.
  • No matter how tempting it might be, do not "accidentally" acquire a paper cut on your finger and suggest your vampire kiss it to make it better.
  • Play it cool. Don't offer to accompany your prince of the night on the talk-show circuit, and whatever you do, don't offer him your heart!
  • Most of all, remember: being a vampire is nothing to laugh about.

January 2011 Release List Update - December 26, 2010

Just a couple of things so far for January 25, 2011 releases.

1)  I've added Joss Ware's Night Betrayed, Envy Chronicles 4.  The omission was brought to my attention by glitter. Thank you!

2) Cherie Priest's Bloodshot, Cheshire Red Reports 1, was mislabeled as YA. It's "very, very adult" per Ms. Priest. I appreciate that Ms. Priest cleared that up. So kids this book is not for you! The publisher lists it as: "Fiction - Fantasy; Fiction - Fantasy - Urban Life" so I'm going with UF for Bloodshot.

Here are the covers and descriptions of both books.

Dear Readers,

As you know I only started adding genre the last couple of monthly lists. They are based on the information my database collects from many different sources. Sometimes both the database and I get it wrong. The genre classifications are sometimes the best pick out of the many genre and subgenres a book fits. Sometimes a genre classification will be incorrect if the database pulls incorrect information from the interwebs and I don't recheck. If you spot any additional mislabeling or if I've missed a book please let me know because I would like the release lists to be as accurate as possible. I sincerely appreciate it when a correction/addition is brought to my attention. Thank you!

Comments on the January 2011 release list can he left here.

January 2011 - New Releases

Here is my list of January 2011 releases. Again I've included the genre or subgenre that I thought fit the book. A key to the abbreviations is below. Covers for anthologies are below. If there is something that I've missed, please leave a comment. Also note that this list is always under revision.

End of Year Giveaway 2 - Chess Putnam / Downside Ghosts Series by Stacia Kane - December 22, 2010

Next up in my end of year giveaways of favorite books from 2010 is the Chess Putnam / Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane. There are 3 books in the series so far: Unholy Ghosts (May 2010), Unholy Magic (July 2010), and City of Ghosts (July 2010). Books 4 and 5 will be coming in late Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 (dates subject to change).

Stacia posted The Brave Tale of Maddie Carver at her site, at Smashwords, and at Scribd. It's a short short story about the beginning of Haunted Week. Haunted Week is important in the world of Chess Putman.

I really can't say enough good things about this new series. It's well-crafted, with a unique setting and history. I wrote a short series review here.

The Chess Putnam / Downside Ghosts Series:

Unholy Ghosts
End of Year Giveaway 2 - Chess Putnam / Downside Ghosts Series by Stacia Kane - December 22, 2010THE DEPARTED HAVE ARRIVED.

The world is not the way it was. The dead have risen, and the living are under attack. The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully tattooed witch and freewheeling ghost hunter. She’s got a real talent for banishing the wicked dead. But Chess is keeping a dark secret: She owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump, who wants immediate payback in the form of a dangerous job that involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump’s ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.

Unholy Magic
End of Year Giveaway 2 - Chess Putnam / Downside Ghosts Series by Stacia Kane - December 22, 2010ENEMIES DON’T NEED TO BE ALIVE TO BE DEADLY.

For Chess Putnam, finding herself near-fatally poisoned by a con psychic and then stopping a murderous ghost is just another day on the job. As an agent of the Church of Real Truth, Chess must expose those looking to profit from the world’s unpleasant little poltergeist problem—humans filing false claims of hauntings—all while staving off any undead who really are looking for a kill. But Chess has been extra busy these days, coping with a new “celebrity” assignment while trying on her own time to help some desperate prostitutes.

Someone’s taking out the hookers of Downside in the most gruesome way, and Chess is sure the rumors that it’s the work of a ghost are way off base. But proving herself right means walking in the path of a maniac, not to mention standing between the two men in her life just as they—along with their ruthless employers—are moving closer to a catastrophic showdown. Someone is dealing in murder, sex, and the supernatural, and once again Chess finds herself right in the crossfire.

City of Ghosts
End of Year Giveaway 2 - Chess Putnam / Downside Ghosts Series by Stacia Kane - December 22, 2010IT’S A THIN LINE BETWEEN ALIVE AND UNDEAD.

Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’s bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case.

Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss—and Chess’s drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity.

Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—all while coping with some not-so-small issues of her own. And the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.

Included with this Giveaway is Dead Star, a necklace from Cemetery Cat Jewelry.

The View From Monday - December 20, 2010

It's Monday... again. The Qwillery is going to be taking it easy over the next couple of weeks. We'll still be posting on most days, but will not be keeping to a rigid schedule except for the End of Year Giveaways on Wednesdays. If it's clear tonight I will get up to watch the total eclipse of the moon. I intend to both film and take photos... if I can stand the cold. Winter starts astronomically tomorrow at at 23:38 pm UTC, which is 6:38 pm US Eastern Time. Happy Winter to all. So far we haven't had any significant snow. I'd like one big storm rather than many small annoying storms like last winter.

I've been spending a lot of time looking at the books that are coming out next year as well as in January 2011. Look for my January 2011 release list over the next few days. Please note that I am still not including Dorchester books on the list until I see the Trade Paperbacks in the book stores.  Sometimes seeing is believing. I'm considering including ebooks on the list soon. I did spot a few anthologies being published next year that are on my must by list.

YOU ARE BEING WATCHED.

Your every movement is being tracked, your every word recorded. Your spouse may be an informer, your children may be listening at your door, your best friend may be a member of the secret police. You are alone among thousands, among great crowds of the brainwashed, the well-behaved, the loyal. Productivity has never been higher, the media blares, and the army is ever triumphant. One wrong move, one slip-up, and you may find yourself disappeared -- swallowed up by a monstrous bureaucracy, vanished into a shadowy labyrinth of interrogation chambers, show trials, and secret prisons from which no one ever escapes. Welcome to the world of the dystopia, a world of government and society gone horribly, nightmarishly wrong.

In his smash-hit anthologies Wastelands and The Living Dead, acclaimed editor John Joseph Adams showed you what happens when society is utterly wiped away. Now he brings you a glimpse into an equally terrifying future -- what happens when civilization invades and dictates every aspect of your life? From 1984 to The Handmaid's Tale, from Children of Men to Bioshock, the dystopian imagination has been a vital and gripping cautionary force. Brave New Worlds collects 33 of the best tales of totalitarian menace by some of today's most visionary writers, including Neil Gaiman, Orson Scott Card, Kim Stanley Robinson, and Ursula K. Le Guin.

When the government wields its power against its own people, every citizen becomes an enemy of the state. Will you fight the system, or be ground to dust beneath the boot of tyranny?

Mash Ups and More Update - Northanger Abbey and Angels and Dragons - December 15, 2010

Dragons in the skies of Regency England!

Gothic horrors collide with high satire in this elegant, hilarious, witty, insane, and unexpectedly romantic supernatural parody of Jane Austen's classic novel.

Young and naive Catherine Morland is constantly surrounded by angels only she alone can see. Leaving her country home for the first time, to embark on a grand adventure that begins in fashionable Bath, our romantic heroine must not only decrypt the mystery of the Udolpho Code but win her true love Henry Tilney.

Meanwhile she is beset by all the Gothic horrors known to Impressionable Young Ladies -- odious demons, Regency balls, elusive ghosts, pleasure excursions, temperature-changing nephilim, secret clues, ogre suitors, and a terrifying ancient Dragon who has very likely hidden a secret treasure hoard somewhere in the depths of Northanger Abbey.

Gentle Reader -- this Delightful Illustrated Edition includes Scholarly Footnotes and Appendices.
