Grave Dance, Alex Craft 2, by Kalayna Price - Cover Reveal - February 1, 2011

Today at her blog Kalayna Price revealed the cover and blurb for the 2nd Alex Craft novel, Grave Dance.

Grave Dance, Alex Craft 2, by Kalayna Price - Cover Reveal - February 1, 2011

Whoever said dead men tell no tales obviously never met Alex Craft.

After a month spent recovering from a vicious fight with a sorcerer, grave witch Alex Craft is ready to get back to solving murders by raising the dead. With her love life in turmoil thanks to the disappearance of Fae Investigation Bureau agent Falin Andrews and a shocking “L” word confession from Death himself, Alex is eager for the distractions of work. But her new case turns out to be a deadly challenge.

The police hire Alex to consult on a particularly strange investigation in the nature preserve south of Nekros City. The strange part: There are no corpses, only fragments of them. A serial killer is potentially on the loose, and Alex has no way to raise a shade without a body, so she’ll have to rely on the magic of others to find leads. But as she begins investigating, a creature born of the darkest magic comes after her. Someone very powerful wants to make sure the only thing she finds is a dead end—her own.

Grave Dance will be published on July 5, 2011. Kalayna stopped The Qwillery the day after Grave Witch, Alex Craft 1, was released. You can read the interview here.

Meljean Brook's contribution is a Guardian novella. Nalinia Singh's novella is about Noel, the vampire injured in Archangel's Kiss.

I think this is a beautiful cover. For some reason though it reminds me of Cirque du Soliel, which is a good thing!

Merrie Destefano Reveals the Cover for Feast: Harvest of Dreams - January 19, 2011

Halloween is a bad time to return to the woods…

Madeline MacFadden (“Mad Mac” to fans of her bestselling magical stories) spent blissful childhood summers in Ticonderoga Falls. And this is where she wants to be now that her adult life is falling apart. The dense surrounding forest holds many memories, some joyous, some tantalizingly only half-remembered. And she’s always believed there was something living in these wooded hills.

But Maddie doesn’t remember the dark parts—and knows nothing of the mountain legend that holds the area’s terrified residents captive. She has no recollection of Ash, the strange and magnificent creature who once saved her life as a child, even though it is the destiny of his kind to prey upon humanity. And soon it will be the Harvest…the time to feast.

Once again Maddie’s dreams—and her soul—are in grave danger. But magic runs deep during Harvest. Even a spinner of enchanted tales has wondrous powers of her own…

A UF Cover Pet Peeve - December 19, 2010

As some of you may know, I take issue with the covers for a lot of Urban Fantasies. I'm speaking of the female bare-midriffed or barely dressed, weapon toting Main Character (MC) on the cover. Honestly, if I was off hunting demons, vampires, trolls, etc. I would wear clothing that afforded me some protection while allowing me unencumbered movement. I wouldn't exposed my midriff. It's like a target yelling "Eviscerate Me Here." I'm not sure whose eye these covers are supposed to catch. Am I supposed to want to be aspire to look that way? Am I not in the target audience? I simply don't know.

Let's take a look at some of the covers for UFs with a female MCs that have been released this year and/or last year. I've picked one from each month as a representative example. This is not a new trend as this sort of cover has been around for some time. Of course, there are plenty of covers not like this. Please note that authors usually have no say in the cover design so this is not reflection on them. Personally, I get tired of this sort of cover, but it's not going to make me stop buying or reading these books. I simply won't judge a book by its cover.

Urban Fantasy - Some of My Favorite Covers

I noticed an odd coincidence the other day. Some of my favorite UF series share a cover illustrator - Chris McGrath. I have to wonder though if it says more about my taste in cover art than in authors? Is there a deeper correlation? I may try reading some of the other books with cover art by Chris McGrath to see if I like them too. Do you have a favorite cover artist? Is there a type of cover that appeals to you?
