Vintage Style In A Modern World

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Night Three Blue & Black

After a day spent in steampunk garb I changed that night for my easy royal blue dress. This is the one I put to the vote for the documentary. It's not vintage but it fits well and with the full skirt it looks good with flats.

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Night Three Blue & Black

With the AB off and about on his own I sadly got very few pictures of this outfit. But i paired it with black and fake white diamond accessories.

I like blue and black as a color combination, I think it's quite classic but with just enough edge. Wine or red with black is so popular in goth culture, that though I love it blue and black feels fresher to me.

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Night Three Blue & Black

To make it ultra modern I like to go for blue leather, or mix it with neutrals. And my retro cut JC Penny printed one is an old favorite. Apart form anything else, it packs great. Although, I am thinking of putting a crinoline under it to make it more poofy.

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Day One Blue & White

So, in case you hadn't guessed, Fashionable Reader, I enjoy standing out visually, but in a classy way, or course. Or as classy as I can possibly manage.  *insert snorting noise here*

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Day One Blue & White

Under circumstances such as San Diego Comic Con standing out is a challenge. There are amazing cospay ladies everywhere, from comic book characters to steampunk to cross overs between the two. There are also lost of shorts and logo t-shirts, wings and hats, and robotic attachments.

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Day One Blue & White

So what did I decide to do in order to be unique? Well, frankly, just dress the way I normally do. With the exception of Saturday day, when I wore a cool adaptation of my old favorite spoon steampunk outfit, I mostly just chose nice bright ladylike dresses.

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Day One Blue & White

I've been hunting down, expanding, and investing in some day dresses in light packable fabrics. And a good thing too, day dresses look much better with flats and we've already discussed that crisis. On Thursday I wore my new blue and cream dress, paired with cream accessories.

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Day One Blue & White

I wore it with the matched jacket, day hat and low key pearls for daytime.

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Day One Blue & White

And switched the jacket out for an evening muff, the hat for a flowered hairband, the purse for a clutch, and the daytime pearls for an evening set for that night.

Gail Carriger at Comic Con 2012 Outfits ~ Day One Blue & White

I love blue & cream (or blue & white) together. It's an elegant color combination and I just don't have enough of it in my wardrobe. I always think of Wedgwood china and the like when I see it, which reminds me of tea, which is no bad thing.

This outfit packs beautifully. As ever, here are some other takes on this classic combo for your perusal, fashionable reader. Let us start with some great retro options.

For a modern take on this look I really love adding a touch of red. It remains ladylike but has a bit of an edge. Black tights can also work well, or simply choosing a dress that is a little more modern.

Book Outfits ~ Changeless by Gail Carriger

So, Fashionable Reader, I am procrastinating terribly and have decided to post one of my occasional book outfit posts. Today, we will take a look at Changeless.

Book Outfits ~ Changeless by Gail Carriger

Book the Second of the Parasol Protectorate is all greys and black and teal. I've two outfits influenced by this book and formal one, as you see above and the flowing, which is more casual.

I love Alexia's dress on this cover, it's probably my favorite. In fact, I had it made up for me from Clockwork Couture.

Book Outfits ~ Wine for Spanish Blameless by Gail Carriger

As I just blogged about on my Author blog, this here is my new cover for the Spanish edition of Blameless.

Book Outfits ~ Wine for Spanish Blameless by Gail Carriger

There is something very Spanish about it, perhaps the color pallet. Perhaps it is her profile. Perhaps it is the little lace gloves. Delving into my own wardrobe I uncovered the following items of clothing that might go with this book.

Gail Carriger in Dallas in a Polka Dot Skirt

Polka dots, Fashionable Reader, I love them so! They came into my purview in the 1980s (for which they can not be blamed) and unlike most of the rest of that lamentable style time period, stayed around in affectionate dotty glory. If nothing else, there has at least always been a polka dot dress and a scarf in my wardrobe somewhere.

Gail Carriger in Dallas in a Polka Dot Skirt

This a-line Max Studio skirt may be the bestest skirt evah. It's lined, an ideal length, the material is lovely and silky, it has three little buttons on the side, and the pattern is perfect. I bought it years ago from a thrift store and it is responsible for my love affair with the Max Studio brand that has stretched to every part of my wardrobe from rain cape, to cashmere sweater, to trousers, (Although, never shoes, Max Studio shoes are painful!)

Gail Carriger in Dallas in a Polka Dot Skirt

For FenCon I paired this skirt with the following . . .

Gail Carriger in Dallas in a Polka Dot Skirt
Grape-like black dot earrings from Target, $5.
Gail Carriger in Dallas in a Polka Dot Skirt
Vintage purse, possibly one of the first pieces I ever owned. I've had it since I was about 8 years old. The clasp works and I love the size and shape, but the stiff handle can make it hard to pack and the zipper for the inside pocket is broken.
Gail Carriger in Dallas in a Polka Dot Skirt
Shiny oxfords from Marshalls. Recent score at $10 on clearance. Love them!
Gail Carriger in Dallas in a Polka Dot Skirt
This faux velvet top started life as a kind of 1940s looking dress. I was never wearing it as a dress but I really needed a nice vintage looking black top, so I cut off the skirt and only use the top section. It makes for a cute top, if a little unfinished looking, and, of course it has such a deep V neckline I had to sew that up slightly as well, for Rack reasons.
Gail Carriger in Dallas in a Polka Dot Skirt
Ash platform mules. I can't remember where I got them, probably Nordstrom Rack I get most of my shoes there, but they are remarkably comfortable. They are one of my standard summer sandals. And they look cute too!

Now, back to the polka dot skirt. Lots of options with such a skirt. Mostly I tend to pair it with black.
