DIY ~ More Hat Decorations with Gail Carriger

A while ago I did a post about making magnetic hat flowers, so I could have different flowers on my two cream hats depending on the dress.

A Reminder

  • The hats have heavy duty magnets under their bands.
  • For each fancy I used a hot glue gun to affix strong rare earth disc magnets (facing the correct direction for the hats!) to the backs.
  • I also glue a bit of ribbon over the magnet as otherwise the magnet is stronger than the glue and just comes off the fancy.
Some day someone smart will market magnet buttons so they can be sewn on . . .

Since the first session of fancy-making, I have been plotting to do this to a cream headband as well, but have been experiencing technical difficulties.

In the interim, I created more fancies!

New Fancies

Black on the hat!
For this one I adapted an old royal blue faire favor. Since I don't do faire anymore, it seemed like a good use for an old friend. Added a spray of feathers to the back with a glue gun, and gued down the magnet and covered with ribbon and wha la!

And lastly I did a cheeky red bow with a button.

One of the best thing about these? They pack small!

Gail Carriger's New Acquisition ~ Lacy Evening Headband

Recently, Fashionable Reader, while bumming about in Petaluma up north I happened upon a vintage store. As you do. This store happened to have a number of items that I happened to fall in love with. One of them was this lace evenign hat/hair band.

It's basically a headband with lace applique applied to it. I suspect it started life as a wedding back and had a veil attached to it. I don't need another cream hat. I wear my bow one all the time and it can pretty well serve day into evening.

But I saw this and could not resist. It's so very cute.

The design, more sharp and angular than the bows will go with some of my printed dresses better, I think.

Anyway here are a couple similar from about the net:

Currently I am still obsessed with finding the perfect cloche hat for these cold weather days, but by the time I do it will probably be summer. I want a real cloche, not one of the ones they have at Marshalls that looks like a floppy bowler. And since I had a small head I can't just buy one off etsy. I have high hopes of the next Alameda Vintage Fair.

After a day spent in the cream, brown and blue dress, I changed into my black and green i.magnin for the Eisner Awards ceremony.

I paired it with black, as usual, for I still have not found the perfect green shoes, clutch, and gloves.

I'm looking, but that emerald green is scarce on the ground. I did, however pick up an adorable feather green and black headpiece at the Alameda Vintage Fair a few months back and with the addition of a broach to one side am rather pleased with the resulting look.

The necklace is hanging woonky, but its a lucite piece I found on my last trip to london at a little fleemarket near St. Charles. I'm not happy with my current earring options to go with so that might have to get added to the list.

Back to the hair feather thingy. Above is a vintage look that kind of had the same feel to me. Almost cabaret, or something.

This black and green dress is a tulip style, which can be flawed as it often adds bulk to the hips. Since I'm top heavy I rather like this feature as I think it balances me out. It's better with heels though.

And for the characters?

Something for Sophronia in the Finishing School series.
