Gail Carriger in Red Capris & Black Velvet with Leopard Accessories at Tucson Festifal of Books 2018

Just got back for Tucson, where it was not as hot as I expected it to be. Still here I am in my lightest weight Rockabilly look...

The black velvet top started life as a 1940s style dress I picked up from Ross and then decided I'd get more use out of as a shirt (truth).

I paired it with a some simple red capris from Talbots and leopard accessories.

Shoes are old ones for Calvin Klein, I've had them for years and they are on their way out (leather is starting to crack). They are SUPER comfortable and I will be utterly devastated when they die.  Although, these are kind cute.

The red top I wore the second day is from H&M. It too is on it's way out, I love that neckline and knit is always a struggle to replace to I'm thinking about trying to find a nice red blouse instead.

Love you darlings!

Gail Carriger discusses her Year in Outfits! Vintage and Retro Style

Without further ado, Fashionable Reader, here are the outfits I wore in 2017!

In Detroit, I went pretty low key and practical. I also was starting to test some of my clothes to see if I really wanted to keep them. Both this skirt and skirt have now gone on to new homes so this is the last time I wore them.

I love this outfit (although this is the cold weather variation). I'm really getting into steampunk pin-up as a look.

Resurrecting an old favorite dress and remembering how much I love it.

Changing up the way I wear my corsets now that I have the reduced rack and modified corsetry.

A new corset with an old dress, another one that I decided not to keep (the dress, not the corset).

More playing with corsets and day dresses. Just swinging up my steampunk style.

I resurrected this dress to see if it still fit. And it did! It's pretty outrageous, does not pack well, and I don't wear it often so I am not sure how much longer it will stay in my wardrobe. But for now, still here.

All the outfits I wore for San Diego Comic Con. Battling heat and crowds made this a bit of a challenge, and always does. But I was happy with the results, and the AB was with me to take photos.

Borderlands events ended my year, making this red skirt my most frequently worn piece for 2017. Money well spent if you ask me.

There were a few other events in there where I didn't get a good outfit shot. I'm bad about remembering to ask someone to take a photo.

I did one major crating project in 2017, which was painting this corset. Other than that no sewing or tailoring or anything. Just some basic repairs.

Gail Carriger in Vintage 1940s Black Velvet Top and a Red Trumpet Skirt with Leopard Accessories

Hello Fashionable Reader!

Here's my most recent event outfit. I went to Borderlands for their Mass Signing 20th Birthday Celebration!

(And then stayed for the Sponsor Social.)

The funny thing about this outfit is that I was having such a hard time deciding what to wear, I had Twitter vote on it.

Here's the break down of what they chose and how I put it together.

The velvet blouse is part of a 1940s suit (the skirt is no more). Like all black velvet, it photographs poorly, but it has tons of lovely little details like buttons and cuffs. You'll just have to trust me that they are there.

The bag, gloves and shoes are all modern but I bought them 10 years ago. The bag came from a thrift store, the shoes are aerosoles, and the gloves H&M.

However, still available are...

Next to the amazing Katherine Kerr (I was a little star struck).

I'm afraid, since it was at night, the light wasn't awesome

Finally here I am in my special Borderlands Sponsor sweatshirt...

Take a good hard look, this is the only time you will ever see Gail Carriger IN A HOODIE.

Gail Carriger in 1950s Retro Red Pedal Pushers and Leopard

For the second day of San Diego Comic Con I wore my coolest outfit (literally and figuratively). For this one I went pure pin up.

I like red and leopard together, but then I love red, so... Leopard is so very versatile.

Here is another way to do Leopard, although, not in Canada. (One gets mistaken for local comedic talent, as it turns out.)

And here is the last time I wore red and leopard together, on the Sword & Laser podcast & video.

Right, now where was I? Oh yes... Comic Con.

Outfit Breakdown

  • Turban style hat. I've gotten really into these lately and am planning on buying more (I already have red, white, and leopard). They come in quite a range of colors, styles, fabrics, and prices, this one is $8. I want to try one of the ones with a bow next.
  • I paired it with a leopard flower hair clip (similar $8).
  • Steampunk earrings (similar $17).
  • Red sunnies $9 (they seem out of the red, but the red and black are killer).
  • I'm wearing the Bumbersnoot necklace from Badali jewelry that they SOLD OUT at Comic Con. There are more on their website, $23-48 depending on material. (I'm currently giving one away to a lucky winner via my newsletter, The Chirrup.)

Gail Carriger's Bay Area Book Festival Outfits ~ Gold Dress meets Red, Black, and Leopard

My dear fashionable reader here is what I wore to the Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley California over the weekend.

Gail Carriger's Bay Area Book Festival Outfits ~ Gold Dress meets Red, Black, and Leopard

Gold eShakti cocktail dress with custom modifications. (I added short sleeves and a wide V neckline.) I love the deep gores on the skirt and the sash belt. This is an old gold color (better on my skin then true gold or white gold) and it has a kind of peacock pattern with threads of black, blue, and pink throughout. I adore it. It looks great with a wide range of accessories. It's the only eShakti dress I've bought since the Rack Reduction, and it isn't a perfect fit, but I do adore it.

Alex White, author friend and date, dressed to match.

I paired it with a dark tan AM CLOTHES Flower and Feather Hair Clip Fascinator $15. They have a number of different styles and colors. I have a couple of them and they pack nicely flat so I love them. Good for day or evening. I added steampunk earrings (gift from a fan, similar $20), gold gloves (similar $5), and robin's egg blue 1940s style platform sandals from Miz Mooz (discontinued, similar $36).

My daytime look for Sunday's panel was this eShakti black poof skirt (discontinued, similar $35), and a long ago purchased red top from H&M. I paired it with Guess black wedge sandals with leopard heels (similar $27), vintage leopard bucked bag (similar $35) and a leopard skinny belt (similar $9).

On top I am wearing leopard gloves (similar $15), a vintage leopard pillbox hat, and steampunk earrings (similar $17).
