Gail Carriger discusses her Year in Outfits! Vintage and Retro Style

Without further ado, Fashionable Reader, here are the outfits I wore in 2017!

In Detroit, I went pretty low key and practical. I also was starting to test some of my clothes to see if I really wanted to keep them. Both this skirt and skirt have now gone on to new homes so this is the last time I wore them.

I love this outfit (although this is the cold weather variation). I'm really getting into steampunk pin-up as a look.

Resurrecting an old favorite dress and remembering how much I love it.

Changing up the way I wear my corsets now that I have the reduced rack and modified corsetry.

A new corset with an old dress, another one that I decided not to keep (the dress, not the corset).

More playing with corsets and day dresses. Just swinging up my steampunk style.

I resurrected this dress to see if it still fit. And it did! It's pretty outrageous, does not pack well, and I don't wear it often so I am not sure how much longer it will stay in my wardrobe. But for now, still here.

All the outfits I wore for San Diego Comic Con. Battling heat and crowds made this a bit of a challenge, and always does. But I was happy with the results, and the AB was with me to take photos.

Borderlands events ended my year, making this red skirt my most frequently worn piece for 2017. Money well spent if you ask me.

There were a few other events in there where I didn't get a good outfit shot. I'm bad about remembering to ask someone to take a photo.

I did one major crating project in 2017, which was painting this corset. Other than that no sewing or tailoring or anything. Just some basic repairs.

Gail Carriger in Vintage 1940s Black Velvet Top and a Red Trumpet Skirt with Leopard Accessories

Hello Fashionable Reader!

Here's my most recent event outfit. I went to Borderlands for their Mass Signing 20th Birthday Celebration!

(And then stayed for the Sponsor Social.)

The funny thing about this outfit is that I was having such a hard time deciding what to wear, I had Twitter vote on it.

Here's the break down of what they chose and how I put it together.

The velvet blouse is part of a 1940s suit (the skirt is no more). Like all black velvet, it photographs poorly, but it has tons of lovely little details like buttons and cuffs. You'll just have to trust me that they are there.

The bag, gloves and shoes are all modern but I bought them 10 years ago. The bag came from a thrift store, the shoes are aerosoles, and the gloves H&M.

However, still available are...

Next to the amazing Katherine Kerr (I was a little star struck).

I'm afraid, since it was at night, the light wasn't awesome

Finally here I am in my special Borderlands Sponsor sweatshirt...

Take a good hard look, this is the only time you will ever see Gail Carriger IN A HOODIE.

Gail Carriger's Imprudence Tour Outfit ~ Red Trumpet Skirt in Texas

For the first two stops of my Imprudence Book tour I wore my new red trumpet skirt. I know, the same skirt, 2x in a row! But you see, Fashionable Reader, 10 stops in 10 days, carry-on only, will limit even my choices of outfit, especially with the impossible heat.

Sorry I didn't note the source, but I think it was on Instagram.

For both Texas events I wore my new red Power Broker- 30s Vintage Style Retro Double Button Skirt $30 (also comes in black). I own the size small (and I run size 4-6 on my lower half). It fits beautifully. This was its first major outing and it was GREAT. It travels like a dream, hardly any wrinkles (taking it into the steamy bathroom while I showered dealt with those). It also washed well out the other side (cold water delicate and a line dry and it looked as good as new).

For both events I paired it with a tiny red bow headband (modern, dying, can't find a good replacement but I'm thinking of something like this), red beaded necklace set (one is vintage the other modern, similar single strand $13, similar earrings $8, similar set $24), obligatory pen necklace (modern replica, $18), and a pair of Via Spiga suede sandals that I got about 10 years ago (no longer available, similar pumps $20-50).

In Houston I paired it with a stretch velvet 1940s style sleeveless top. This was originally a dress from Ross but I cannibalized it into a blouse and I wear it all the time. I adore it. It looks better in person.

In Austin I wore the red skirt with my cherry top. I got this one overseas, I want to say Germany or France, although I think it's a UK brand. Paid too much for it but I've certainly got my money's worth. Here's something in the same pattern if not cut, $34.

One of things I love about this skirt is that it not only works for retro but it is on trend for Fall 2011. Well, to be fair, bright pants are the real trend, but why wear pants when you can don a cute pencil skirt instead?

So the hat is a vintage piece (more on felt hats to come), but everything else in this outfit is actually modern. Well, reasonably modern, as in a few years old. I believe both the skirt and top are Ross scores, and the shoes are my favorite Miz Mooz. I'm actually not hugely happy with the fit of this shirt but I'm too lazy to tailor it and it is, I believe, one of only three button up shirts I own that I actually didn't have to sew the buttons closed over the Rack. A rare thing indeed. What do I love most about it? The cherry print.

I love wearing cherries. It's almost as much fun as wearing bows. I have no idea why. I suppose I am obsessed with food, and fruit in particular. I even like to smell like food, so why not wear it? And, before you ask, yes that certainly does influence my descriptions of Ivy Hisselpenny's hats.

The difficult thing about a red skirt, and mine in particular, is that they can leak into sex-pot easily. That's fine if you are shooting for a vah-vah-voom look, but, most of the time, I'm not. When one has the Rack of a stripper one should try to avoid dressing like a stripper, least people start throwing money at you. Wait a moment . . . I may be going about this the wrong way.

My inclination is to go for a less sexy but still retro look by pairing a red skirt with something slightly prim and librarian ~ a button down shirt, pussycat bow shirt, or a knit sweater top.

The cool thing about the red skirt right now? It's a great transition piece. It'll go from summer to fall and back again with no issues at all.

The other good thing about a red this intense is, if you don't like reds for your skin tone, this skirt is far away from your face and can work with black tights, so you don't have to concern yourself with complexion issues. Come to think on it, that holds true for any brightly colored skirt. This trend means you can add an intense pop of color to your outfit for fall without fear! That said, a bright will draw attention to your bottom half, so if that is your problem area best to put your brights on your top or as accessories.

A Quick Word On Black Tights

TIGHTS, mind you, NEVER leggings. Shudder. Leggings. Ugh. Give me a moment. OK, I'm better.

I do love me a nice pair of opaque black tights, and they are very slimming. I shell out good money to get mine from dance stores ($20-30). They tend to have better quality, more comfortable fits, and last for years. Look for tights that have a seam that goes all the way up the back of the legs and stays divided over the but (that is, one seam over each cheek, not to be crass). I don't know why but it is a sign of a much more comfortable fit.

And what to read in your red pencil skirt? I'd be remiss if I didn't suggest my recently launched first ever self-published short story. I know, I know, but this is my blog. I can shill sometimes, can't I?
