New Views of the Old Vianney Halter "Antiqua"

New Views of the Old Vianney Halter Although I've featured this remarkable watch before, Suitbert of The Purists has photographed it in a new light. Somehow, it looks more "Steampunk" than ever before, as if it's rising from the sea with a few giant squid trying to grasp it back down into the murky depths.

Vintage Watching - Hamilton Odyssee 2001 & Altair Electric

Just noticed a couple of my favorite vintage Hamilton watches are up for auction this week. The 1969 Odyssee 2001, introduced in conjunction with Stanley Kubrick's "2001 - A Space Odyssey". Hamilton was hired by the film to create a watch worn by astronauts of the future. Unfortunately, they didn't release the prop version to the public but they did try to cash in on the success of the movie by producing this one. To avoid lawsuits, they altered the spelling from Odyssey to Odyssee. And just last year, Hamilton released an interpretation of the film version in a signed limited edition of...2001.

And below, the ultra rare Altair Electric. Released in 1961 in very low numbers leading it to be one of the more collectible of the Electric series. Dramatically asymmetric design by the master of Lancaster, Richard Arbib. Their other auction features the original mesh bracelet!

Horological Horticulture - 1970's Greenhouse Watch

Horological Horticulture - 1970's Greenhouse WatchFound an interesting vintage mechanical Lucerne that could double as a terrarium. I'm sure there's a geometric term for this shape but I must have skipped that day in high school. Similar to the Spaceman Audacieuse of the early seventies with it's anglular space age styling, unsure which came first. Transparent viewing from the sides and top allow the sunlight to germinate your hour flowers.

1970 Jovial Vision 2000 - Today's Time with Tomorrow's Styling

1970 Jovial Vision 2000 - Today's Time with Tomorrow's StylingEvery so often, I find a really odd watch I've never seen before, never heard of before, and can not live without after. This 70's "Jovial Vision 2000" is one of those, and now one of many vintage Holy Grails I must seek out. Having never seen the actual watch, I'm satiated for now with this original advertisement from an early seventies Basel Fair.

One of a few watches that had half-dials with compressed hours for the covered portion. I am organizing a future posting (next week) of all the unusual vintage varieties with this strange display. If anyone ever does find a Jovial Vision 2000, please email me, share the photos for a follow up and prepare to receive an offer from me. I'd be more than jovial...yes, I just said that. Ugh.

Paul Smith Dashboard Watch

Paul Smith Dashboard WatchPaul Smith has reissued the dashboard style watch, a somewhat tamer variation of the previous model from their fun collection of the late-nineties. Called the PS20, it features what appears to be a retrograde style display (when hands reach the right, they flyback in the blink of an eye), but it's actually just a double handed display. Once one end of a hand is out of view, the opposite end appears. Time is told much like that of many other retrograde watches (seen here-->link) and the casing appears to be brushed steel with a block link bracelet. The date is viewed through a porthole in the bottom half of the watch. £375 (quartz) Paul Smith Watches-->Link

Polished steel, sport link bracelet, expanding digits

Some had mechanical movements, most were Quartz. Many inspirations from the vintage LIP, Christian Dior and Pierre Cardin watches of the seventies. Most of the current collection is pretty drab otherwise.

Blu Duett

Blu Duett
Blu, a relatively new brand with its trademark off-centre displays just introduced their latest model called the Duett. An automatic modified ETA 2892 movement in a large 44mm steel case. The date is displayed in the L of the logo with a tail of past dates incorporated into the design. Hour markers are split into two with a semi-circle on the left and dial engravings on the right.
