The Beatles songs selected for this disc are nicely arranged as Baroque chamber music pieces, with a nice balance between Baroque styling and Beatles melody so some of them are not instantly recognizable as Beatles masterpieces unless you have a really good ear, but they always sound Baroque. The playing is very fine - well balanced and always in tune. It is hard not to love this disc. Friends with a primarily classical music ear and other friends who come from a stronger Beatles background equally like this disc.

The Concerto Grosso is a form of baroque music in which the musical material is passed between a small group of soloists (the concertino) and full orchestra (concerto grosso). The form developed in the late XVII century, although the name was not used at first. Alessandro Stradella seems to have written the first music in which two groups of different sizes are combined in the characteristic way. The name was first used by Giovanni Lorenzo Gregori in a set of ten compositions published in Lucca in 1698. The first major composer to use the term concerto grosso was Arcangelo Corelli. After Corelli's death, a collection of twelve of his concerti grossi was published. Not long after, composers such as Francesco Geminiani, Pietro Locatelli, and Giuseppe Torelli wrote concertos in the style of Corelli. He also had a strong influence on Antonio Vivaldi.
The Four Seasons (compare: The Beatles Seasons) - the best known of Vivaldi's works - they were written around 1721 - is a group of four Concerti Grossi by Antonio Vivaldi, each of which gives musical expression to a season of the year.

Chet Atkins - Picks On The Beatles (1966 2008 USA)

Chester Burton "Chet" Atkins (June 20, 1924 - June 30, 2001), known as "Mr. Guitar" and "The Country Gentleman", was an American musician, occasional vocalist, songwriter, and record producer, who along with Owen Bradley and Bob Ferguson, among others, created the country music style that came to be known as the Nashville sound, which expanded country music's appeal to adult pop music fans. He was primarily known as a guitarist. His guitar of choice was the Gretsch Country Gentleman. He also played the mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and ukulele. Atkins's signature picking style was inspired by Merle Travis. Other major guitar influences were Django Reinhardt, George Barnes, Les Paul, and, later, Jerry Reed. His distinctive picking style and musicianship brought him admirers inside and outside the country scene, both in the United States and abroad. Atkins spent most of his career at RCA Victor and produced records for the Browns, Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner, Norma Jean, Dolly Parton, Dottie West, Perry Como, Floyd Cramer, Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, Eddy Arnold, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Jerry Reed, Skeeter Davis, Waylon Jennings, and many others. Rolling Stone credited Atkins with inventing the "popwise 'Nashville sound' that rescued country music from a commercial slump," and ranked him number 21 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time." Among many other honors, Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He also received nine Country Music Association awards for Instrumentalist of the Year. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum.
"Chet Atkins Picks on the Beatles" is the title of a 1966 RCA Victor LP. Atkins interprets a selection of songs by The Beatles on this album.

Sugarpie & The Candymen - Let It Swing (2015 Italy)

Sugarpie & The Candymen - Let It Swing (2015 Italy)

"Let it swing", it's Sugarpie & The Candymen fourth album, is their tribute to the greatest band in the history of pop-rock: the Beatles. The title - which evokes one of the Beatles famous songs : "Let It Be" - and the cover - which winks an eye at their psychedelic masterpiece "Yellow Submarine" - accompany a kaleidoscope of songs ranging from the classics of the early years of the Fab Four, as "She Loves You", to the evergreen recordings of their last years of activity like "Come Together", all rigorously reviewed in their swing style, which has now become Sugarpie’s trademark sound. The Album is a studio reworking of one of their Live Shows dedicated to the Beatles and Louis Armstrong which was first performed at the Ascona Jazz Festival in summer 2014. It was then repeated at Umbria Jazz 2015, and on the famous Web TV Show called Web Notte. The main feature of the Album is the way it was recorded Live almost entirely in a single session in the Studio and the great originality of the arrangements and the feeling of freshness of the performance. Sugarpie & The Candymen have strongly wanted to prove with this record their devotion and their love for the magical band from Liverpool.

Sugarpie & the Candymen began in 2008, when five musicians from Piacenza and Cremona – small towns in Northern Italy – joined their forces and the shared passion for swing music, monouche jazz, pop, and vocal close harmonies. A band was born, with the challenge to marry all these musical styles. The band is made up of singer Miss Sugarpie, aka Georgia Ciavatta, and her Candymen Jacopo Delfini (gipsy guitar and harmonies), Renato Podesta (electric guitar, banjo and harmonies), Roberto Lupo (drums) and Claudio Ottaviano (double bass). Very soon the band became a full-time commitment, starting an intense almost non-stop tour in hundreds of jazz clubs around Italy and Europe.
This first period allowed Sugarpie and the Candymen to work out both their sound and their repertoire: their musical caleidoscope has the most diverse artists one close to the other, such as Led Zeppelin and Django Reinhardt, The Beatles and Bessie Smith, Van Halen and Benny Goodman, Guns 'n' Roses and Ray Charles, Queen and Peggy Lee and so on. The challenge has been won!
In 2010 the band kept evolving and started writing and performing their original songs, both in English and in Italian. They started playing the bigger stages of prestigious festivals all around Europe, and they even did a brief US tour. To further enhance their sound, the band had the opportunity to collaborate both live and in the studio with some brilliant Italiand and American musicians.

Helen Merrill - Sings Beatles (1970 1993 USA)

Jazz vocalist Helen Merrill was known for cool reserve and elegant style of swing and she's in fine form here in a superbly recorded live-in-the-studio session. This 1970 album was originally only released in Japan and the repertoire and arrangements are a departure from her standards. Pianist Masahiko Satoh adds jazz-pop sensibilities to the Lennon & McCartney songbook with a bit of psychedelic guitar that marks the time period.

The Beatles at The Star-Club (Purple Chick) 2 CD

The Beatles at The Star-Club (Purple Chick) 2 CD

This is a real gift from Jancy...

" This release clears up a lot of speculation about the Beatles’ Star Club tapes, thanks to an unedited and unprocessed source tape (for which we cannot thank DarthDisc and the Darthelves enough). Although the recording dates are still guesses, we now know the correct order for about 2/3 of the songs. Even so, the second half of disc one is sequenced based more on smooth transitions than solid setlist information.

We tried to make sure every Star Club sound was accounted for, but not repeated: auditioning many “Live At The Star Club” CDs and LPS on a number of labels. Even so, we used Darthdisc’s unprocessed tape wherever possible. As well as offering upgrades and previously unheard chat “Red Hot,” though still incomplete, is twice as long as before. “Red Sails…” now has an extra verse compared with the released version, while “I Saw Her Standing There” on disc two has an extra guitar solo. Conversely, we removed looped portions of “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down…”, “Twist And Shout” and “I Remember You.”

It’s by no means perfect, but it’s the best we have at the moment. And it’s the first time we’ve listened to the Star Club tapes in years. Hopefully you’ll gain a new appreciation for these historic recordings as well.

All tracks mono, at the correct speed, and eq’d for the most coherent listening experience. Enjoy! "
