Chet Atkins - Picks On The Beatles (1966 2008 USA)

Chester Burton "Chet" Atkins (June 20, 1924 - June 30, 2001), known as "Mr. Guitar" and "The Country Gentleman", was an American musician, occasional vocalist, songwriter, and record producer, who along with Owen Bradley and Bob Ferguson, among others, created the country music style that came to be known as the Nashville sound, which expanded country music's appeal to adult pop music fans. He was primarily known as a guitarist. His guitar of choice was the Gretsch Country Gentleman. He also played the mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and ukulele. Atkins's signature picking style was inspired by Merle Travis. Other major guitar influences were Django Reinhardt, George Barnes, Les Paul, and, later, Jerry Reed. His distinctive picking style and musicianship brought him admirers inside and outside the country scene, both in the United States and abroad. Atkins spent most of his career at RCA Victor and produced records for the Browns, Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner, Norma Jean, Dolly Parton, Dottie West, Perry Como, Floyd Cramer, Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, Eddy Arnold, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Jerry Reed, Skeeter Davis, Waylon Jennings, and many others. Rolling Stone credited Atkins with inventing the "popwise 'Nashville sound' that rescued country music from a commercial slump," and ranked him number 21 on their list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time." Among many other honors, Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He also received nine Country Music Association awards for Instrumentalist of the Year. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum.
"Chet Atkins Picks on the Beatles" is the title of a 1966 RCA Victor LP. Atkins interprets a selection of songs by The Beatles on this album.

Sugarpie & The Candymen - Let It Swing (2015 Italy)

"Let it swing", it's Sugarpie & The Candymen fourth album, is their tribute to the greatest band in the history of pop-rock: the Beatles. The title - which evokes one of the Beatles famous songs : "Let It Be" - and the cover - which winks an eye at their psychedelic masterpiece "Yellow Submarine" - accompany a kaleidoscope of songs ranging from the classics of the early years of the Fab Four, as "She Loves You", to the evergreen recordings of their last years of activity like "Come Together", all rigorously reviewed in their swing style, which has now become Sugarpie’s trademark sound. The Album is a studio reworking of one of their Live Shows dedicated to the Beatles and Louis Armstrong which was first performed at the Ascona Jazz Festival in summer 2014. It was then repeated at Umbria Jazz 2015, and on the famous Web TV Show called Web Notte. The main feature of the Album is the way it was recorded Live almost entirely in a single session in the Studio and the great originality of the arrangements and the feeling of freshness of the performance. Sugarpie & The Candymen have strongly wanted to prove with this record their devotion and their love for the magical band from Liverpool.

Sugarpie & the Candymen began in 2008, when five musicians from Piacenza and Cremona – small towns in Northern Italy – joined their forces and the shared passion for swing music, monouche jazz, pop, and vocal close harmonies. A band was born, with the challenge to marry all these musical styles. The band is made up of singer Miss Sugarpie, aka Georgia Ciavatta, and her Candymen Jacopo Delfini (gipsy guitar and harmonies), Renato Podesta (electric guitar, banjo and harmonies), Roberto Lupo (drums) and Claudio Ottaviano (double bass). Very soon the band became a full-time commitment, starting an intense almost non-stop tour in hundreds of jazz clubs around Italy and Europe.
This first period allowed Sugarpie and the Candymen to work out both their sound and their repertoire: their musical caleidoscope has the most diverse artists one close to the other, such as Led Zeppelin and Django Reinhardt, The Beatles and Bessie Smith, Van Halen and Benny Goodman, Guns 'n' Roses and Ray Charles, Queen and Peggy Lee and so on. The challenge has been won!
In 2010 the band kept evolving and started writing and performing their original songs, both in English and in Italian. They started playing the bigger stages of prestigious festivals all around Europe, and they even did a brief US tour. To further enhance their sound, the band had the opportunity to collaborate both live and in the studio with some brilliant Italiand and American musicians.

Elton John - The Legendary Covers Album '69-'70 (2015 UK)

These recordings are from the days prior to Elton John's success as a solo performer. They are taken from a variety of periodically issued budget-priced compilations of hit songs, under brand names including Top of the Pops, Chartbusters and Hot Hits. These were issued by budget labels including Music for Pleasure and featured current or recent hits re-recorded, with varying degrees of note-for-note accuracy, by nameless 'soundalike' performers. Like many other jobbing session singers of the time, John worked as a vocalist on these albums. These covers compilations were cheaply recorded, cheaply priced, and sold in large quantities until, in 1972, compilations featuring the original artists were introduced by such labels as K-Tel. The public preferred the original recordings and the market for cheap cover compilations rapidly declined. This album collects together John's contributions to a variety of covers albums issued during 1969 and 1970. This collection was released by minor labels in the UK and US in 1994 and was re-issued many times afterwards.

Max Raabe & Palast Orchester - Super Hits (2001 Germany)

The Palast Orchester (literal translation, Palace Orchestra) is a German orchestra, based in Berlin, constituted in the manner of dance bands of the 1920s and 1930s. Its repertoire specialises in cabaret and popular songs of the Weimar period in Germany and in American popular songs of the same era. The orchestra performs around 120 concerts per year.
Max Raabe founded the orchestra with fellow students at the Berlin University of the Arts in 1985. The ensemble initially used music arrangements that Raabe found whilst shopping at various flea markets. The orchestra worked for one year on learning these arrangements without any public engagements or performances. The orchestra gave its first public performance at the 1987 Berlin Theaterball, in the lobby as a secondary act, but with such success that the audience left the ballroom to hear the orchestra's performance in the lobby. The ensemble had its first song hit 5 years later, an original song by Raabe, "Kein Schwein ruft mich an". The members of the orchestra are all men, with the single exception of the violinist, who has always been female. In addition to its performances of vintage German and American popular songs, the orchestra has also performed contemporary music in the same musical style as the earlier songs, including covers of songs by Britney Spears, Tom Jones, Salt'n'Pepa, etc. The orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut in 2005. The ensemble returned to Carnegie Hall in November 2007, and the performance was recorded for commercial release on the album "Heute Nacht oder nie - Live In New York". The orchestra returned to Carnegie Hall in March 2014.

In 1962 he formed his first group, The Blue Jeans. However, in 1966 he left the group and formed The Bunnys with whom he played. Helen Merrill - Sings Beatles (1970 1993 USA)

Jazz vocalist Helen Merrill was known for cool reserve and elegant style of swing and she's in fine form here in a superbly recorded live-in-the-studio session. This 1970 album was originally only released in Japan and the repertoire and arrangements are a departure from her standards. Pianist Masahiko Satoh adds jazz-pop sensibilities to the Lennon & McCartney songbook with a bit of psychedelic guitar that marks the time period.
