Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers were a British instrumental beat group in the early 1960s. Originally based in East Anglia, England, the Jaywalkers, comprising Peter Miller (lead guitar), Tony Webster (rhythm guitar), Mac McIntyre (tenor saxophone/flute), Lloyd Baker (piano/baritone saxophone), Geoff Moss (acoustic bass), Johnny Larke (electric bass), and Peter Jay (drums), pre-dated the British beat boom.

 They scored a minor hit in 1962 with ‘Can Can 62’, but despite an unquestioned competence, their rather stilted act became increasingly anachronistic."Can Can 62", was produced by Joe Meek and reached the British singles chart in 1962.  The group attempted a more contemporary image with several R&B-based releases, and in 1966 a restructured line-up emerged under the name Peter Jay And The New Jaywalkers. Now reduced to a quintet, the unit featured vocalist Terry Reid, but despite an impressive appearance on the Rolling Stones’ UK tour, they disbanded by the end of that year.The group toured with both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones before disbanding in 1966.

Having caught the tail-end of the instrumental boom with hit 45 ‘Can Can ‘62’, they recorded a further eight singles for Decca and then Pye, many produced by the legendary Joe Meek.
This is the first time that The Jaywalkers’ recordings have officially been compiled onto CD, remastered from the original tapes.
Both Peter Jay and guitarist ‘Big Boy’ Pete Miller are cooperating with this release, via a raft of anecdotes and rare photos/images.
‘Parchman Farm’, ‘Before The Beginning’ and ‘Red Cabbage’ (as in ‘Green Onions’!) are now valuable collector’s items among the Mod fraternity.

The Astronauts -  Rarities...

Along with Minnesota's Trashmen, the Astronauts (from Colorado) were the premier landlocked Midwestern surf group of the '60s. They recorded numerous singles and albums and achieved vast regional popularity, but only scored one modest national hit, "Baja." With little material of their own, they judiciously tapped heavyweights like Lee Hazelwood (who wrote "Baja"), Roger Christian, and Gary Usher, as well as covering tunes by Dick Dale and Henry Mancini. The group shone brightest on their instrumentals, which used mounds of Fender reverb and two rhythm guitars; when they sang, the results were much less successful

Normally, a CD like this, made up of true obscurities, wouldn't be the place that one should start listening to a group. But it's also almost impossible to listen to this collection of early tracks and vault leftovers and not feel a tremendous respect for the Astronauts, or conclude that this CD might be as good a place as any for the neophyte listener to plunge into their sound. It's all that strong. The early Palladium Records single "Come Along Baby" b/w "Tryin' to Get to You" (the latter featuring vocals by bassist Stormy Patterson) is pretty impressive, and the two dozen outtakes from their 1963-1965 RCA sessions show off a band that had several albums' worth of substantial and enjoyable surf music at their disposal, the unheard stuff every bit as good as what got released. Robert Demmon, Dennis Lindsey, and Richard Fifield could come up with as many interesting and different guitar attacks, and James Gallagher was just as adept on the drums as their opposite numbers in the Ventures; only the latter group got to release about three albums a year, whereas the Astronauts did about a third of that. What's more, as "Tryin' to Get to You" and "Everyone but Me" show, they were fairly strong in the vocal department when necessary, although "My Little Beach Bunny" was nothing to write home about in terms of lyrics. Their later stuff here, especially "Buy Me a Round" and "Shame Shame Shame," has a garage punk edge that will prove a real shocker for those who only associate the group with their surf movie appearances. Their 1965-vintage rendition of "Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day" is a snarling masterpiece that runs circles around the Monkees' version, and it's followed by an instrumental adaptation of the same material that doubles the fun. Next up, in turn, are the vaguely folk-rockish "The Tables Have Turned" and "Girls Like You" with their jangly guitars and Searchers-like introductions -- and it's difficult to hold anything against any band that covers "I'm Gonna Buy Me a Dog." The stuff here may all be rare or hard-to-find for lots of reasons, but not because it deserves to be. The sound is excellent, up to Bear Family's usual standard, and the annotation nicely informative and, at times, downright fun -- a lot like the music.

His 1958 album "Happy Days Are Here Again" was the first South African album to go gold (more than 25,000 sales), and he gained further fame and notoriety with his Sounds Electronic series of records. In 1967 he co-founded RPM Records, opening the RPM Studios in 1979.

Hill was also known for his own albums, particularly the Sounds Electronics series of dance records launched in 1967 said Garth Chilvers.

These - and Music to Watch Girls By - caused a stir with their provocative album covers of scantily clad women - pictured on www.rock.co.za - and many had to be manually covered up with sketched on bikinis.

"Covers of best-selling records banned," shouted one newspaper headline. Another pointed out that what the model's own father had found acceptable, the censors had not, according to the website.

Hill's album Happy Days Are Here Again was the first South African album to go gold with more than 25 000 sales. His first Afrikaans album was Kom Dans Vanaand, Unika.

Established 1958 was a tenth anniversary effort by Cliff Richard & the Shadows, reuniting singer and band after several years of establishing separate musical identities. It showcases the songwriting of the bandmembers -- Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Brian Bennett, and John Rostill, who, singly or in combination, wrote everything here -- and Richard's preferred style of the period, an adult pop/rock style not too far removed from what Neil Diamond was doing on the opposite side of the Atlantic (except that Richard didn't write songs). Seven vocal numbers feature Richard and seven mixed instrumental and vocal numbers showcase the band exclusively, but little of it ever gets near to the sounds contemporary to 1968, and it was albums like this -- far removed from Richard's efforts at sounding up-to-date, such as Don't Stop Me Now -- that pegged the singer as a British-only pop phenomenon for the next half-decade or more. "Oh La La" is the only up-to-date, real rock & roll number here, and it might've passed muster as a comeback single in the same manner that "Kentucky Rain" did for Elvis Presley, keeping his credibility alive at the time, separate from his movies, for those still listening -- it has some of the urgency and allure of Richard's best solo singles. Some of the other cuts, such as "Somewhere by the Sea," sort of rock, with a beat and some crunchy guitars out in front, and the novelty instrumental "The Magical Mrs. Clamps" shows off the most informal, comical side of the Shadows (who could sound like the early Nitty Gritty Dirt Band when they wanted to). Otherwise, this record is more identified by the slow, very sentimental ballad "The Girl on the Bus," which features Richard and the band with accompaniment arranged by producer Norrie Paramor, or "Maggie's Samba" by Brian Bennett, which sounds like part of a movie score in search of a film. It was a natural fit for U.K. listeners accustomed to Richard and with their own pop perceptions, but would have flown right past American listeners, although its has its moments and some nice, somewhat formalistic pop/rock virtuosity to recommend it four decades on

Thank You Very Much: London Palladium Reunion Concert

Recorded at the London Palladium on March 4, 1978, this live concert release is one of the most appealing and rewarding of all post-'60s Cliff Richard releases as a career overview as a well as a performance document, and one of the best Shadows releases of the late '70s. On vinyl, it was a choice import for much of the first half of the '80s, although the CD version has been much more difficult to find. Reuniting Richard with guitarists Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch for a 20th anniversary commemorative concert, Richard and the Shadows perform a selection of their best-known songs across the decades -- for the band these include the instrumentals "Apache," "Shadoogie," "Atlantis," and "Nivram," while Richard performs "Move It," "The Young Ones" (with a surprisingly effective electronic keyboard accompaniment in lieu of the strings used in the original), "Willie and the Hand Jive," "Do You Wanna Dance," "The Day I Met Marie," and "Devil Woman." Richard is in fine voice and Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch are both in stunning form throughout, Marvin's fiery yet clean and tasteful leads and Welch's melodic yet powerfully propulsive rhythm guitar (supported by Brian Bennett's drumming) drawing the listener in and adding just enough that's new to the material to make it worth adding to one's collection. One does wish that there was some more annotation about the event or the full personnel, but as pure music this is a first-rate release, whose only frustrating point is its length -- when it was on vinyl, the hourlong show was mastered at a very low volume, whereas on CD (paired with Richard's Green Light album) one wishes it ran longer. Indeed, the only real question is whether the 15 songs here were all that was performed at this show -- and also, while we're at it, what became of the video that was shot simultaneously with the recording. But regardless, this CD is a keeper, not just for Cliff Richard or Shadows fans, but for anyone who wants to hear what pre-Beatles British rock & roll at its best could sound like.
