Cookbooks for Genre Lovers, Part 1 - December 7, 2012

The holidays are nearly upon us. Run and hide. Not really. Here is a short guide (Part 1) to cookbooks for the genre lover in your life (including you).  All of these cookbooks are currently available from a variety of sources. I may blog about genre cookbooks that you will have to find used at some point. Please note that I did not include self-published cookbooks because there are just so many of them!

A Feast of Ice and Fire
The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook
Bantam, May 29, 2012
Hardcover and eBook, 240 pages

Cookbooks for Genre Lovers, Part 1 - December 7, 2012
Ever wonder what it’s like to attend a feast at Winterfell? Wish you could split a lemon cake with Sansa Stark, scarf down a pork pie with the Night’s Watch, or indulge in honeyfingers with Daenerys Targaryen? George R. R. Martin’s bestselling saga A Song of Ice and Fire and the runaway hit HBO series Game of Thrones are renowned for bringing Westeros’s sights and sounds to vivid life. But one important ingredient has always been missing: the mouthwatering dishes that form the backdrop of this extraordinary world. Now, fresh out of the series that redefined fantasy, comes the cookbook that may just redefine dinner . . . and lunch, and breakfast.

A passion project from superfans and amateur chefs Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Sariann Lehrer—and endorsed by George R. R. Martin himself—A Feast of Ice and Fire lovingly replicates a stunning range of cuisines from across the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. From the sumptuous delicacies enjoyed in the halls of power at King’s Landing, to the warm and smoky comfort foods of the frozen North, to the rich, exotic fare of the mysterious lands east of Westeros, there’s a flavor for every palate, and a treat for every chef.

These easy-to-follow recipes have been refined for modern cooking techniques, but adventurous eaters can also attempt the authentic medieval meals that inspired them. The authors have also suggested substitutions for some of the more fantastical ingredients, so you won’t have to stock your kitchen with camel, live doves, or dragon eggs to create meals fit for a king (or a khaleesi). In all, A Feast of Ice and Fire contains more than 100 recipes, divided by region:
  • The Wall: Rack of Lamb and Herbs; Pork Pie; Mutton in Onion-Ale Broth; Mulled Wine; Pease Porridge
  • The North: Beef and Bacon Pie; Honeyed Chicken; Aurochs with Roasted Leeks; Baked Apples
  • The South: Cream Swans; Trout Wrapped in Bacon; Stewed Rabbit; Sister’s Stew; Blueberry Tarts
  • King’s Landing: Lemon Cakes; Quails Drowned in Butter; Almond Crusted Trout; Bowls of Brown; Iced Milk with Honey
  • Dorne: Stuffed Grape Leaves; Duck with Lemons; Chickpea Paste
  • Across the Narrow Sea: Biscuits and Bacon; Tyroshi Honeyfingers; Wintercakes; Honey-Spiced Locusts
There’s even a guide to dining and entertaining in the style of the Seven Kingdoms. Exhaustively researched and reverently detailed, accompanied by passages from all five books in the series and full-color photographs guaranteed to whet your appetite, this is the companion to the blockbuster phenomenon that millions of stomachs have been growling for. And remember, winter is coming—so don’t be afraid to put on a few pounds.

Includes a Foreword by George R. R. Martin

Astonishing Recipes from Terry Pratchett's Discworld
Transworld Publishers, February 26, 2002
Paperback and eBook, 176 pages

Cookbooks for Genre Lovers, Part 1 - December 7, 2012
'They say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach which just goes to show they're as confused about anatomy as they gen'rally are about everything else, unless they're talking about instructions on how to stab him, in which case a better way is up and under the ribcage. Anyway, we do not live in a perfect world and it is foresighted and useful for a young woman to become proficient in those arts which will keep a weak-willed man from straying. Learning to cook is also useful.'

Nanny Ogg, one of Discworld's most famous witches, is passing on some of her huge collection of tasty and above all interesting recipes, since everyone else is doing it. But in addition to the delights of the Strawberry Wobbler and Nobby's Mum's Distressed Pudding, Mrs Ogg imparts her thoughts on life, death, etiquette ('If you go to other people's funerals they'll be sure to come to yours'), courtship, children and weddings, all in a refined style that should not offend the most delicate of sensibilities. Well, not much.

Most of the recipes have been tried out on people who are still alive.

Nanny Ogg Gratefully Ackowledges the Assistance in this Literary Argosy of: Mr Terry Pratchett, Mr Stephen Briggs, Mlle Tina Hannan and Master Paul Kidby.

This is Part 2 of my post about collecting True Blood comics from IDW Publishing. Today I'll cover Series 1, Issues 3 - 6. I'll also reveal the only exclusive cover I've not been able to find. You can read Part I of this post here.

True Blood, Series 1, Issues 4 - 6

True Blood, Issue 4 has 8 covers: 2 regular covers and 6 exclusives and incentives. Issue 4 includes the last Hot Topic Exclusive and the first Australian Exclusive from IKON Collectibles. I purchased the first IKON Collectibles exclusive on eBay from Popcultcha. After that I picked up the Australian exclusives directly through Popcultcha's website. I had absolutely no problems whatsoever ordering directly from Popcultcha.

So there you have it. This adds up to a lot of different covers for True Blood, Series 1. If there are 2nd or 3rd printings of any of these issues, I'll pick them up... of course. I hope to find the missing exclusive for Issue 5. Again, if you know of any variants I don't have, leave a comment.

Images are from IDW Publishing, Hot Topic, Dynamic Forces, Jetpack ComicsPopcultcha and my own photos and scans.

IDW Publishing has a new Godzilla comic coming out soon. IDW has partnered with Toho Co., Ltd. for the comic which means 2 things - 1) the Toho monsters will appear in the comic and 2) I'll be collecting it with all variants.

Wednesday Comics on Thursday - A Tale of Collecting True Blood Comics, Part 1 - January 27, 2011

I collect a lot of different comics and usually don't bother collecting all the variant covers. However, every now and then I do decide I want the variants. I decided to collect all the variants of the True Blood, Series 1 comic from IDW Publishing. Little did I know what I was getting myself into.

I picked up some of these comics at my local comic shop, some directly from the shops or companies issuing the exclusives, some from eBay, some from Mile High Comics, and some from Midtown Comics. Some came from overseas, but more on that in Part 2 of this post. Any mistakes in labeling the covers are mine.

After collecting all 20 variants of True Blood, Series 1, Issue 1, I became much better at knowing where to look and when to buy. Did I pay too much for some of these comics? Undoubtedly. On the other hand I purchased others at really good prices so I think it comes out all even in the end. Is it satisfying? Yes, it is. Will I do this for True Blood, Series 2 - True Blood Tainted? Quite possibly.

True Blood, Series 1, Issues 1 - 3

True Blood, Issue 1 has 4 regular covers, 11 variants/exclusives/retailer incentive covers, 2 resissue covers, and a Legacy issue, with photo variant and 1 exclusive for a total of 20 covers. It was quite an experience getting all of them. The last one I purchased was Cover K. I watched for it on eBay for quite some time and was thrilled to finally get it. To the best of my knowledge I now have all covers for True Blood #1.

Vincent Price Presents 22:

This one shot featuring Vincent Price tells another gothic adventure! The great Roman Philosopher and Statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero once wrote: “I remember the very things I do not wish to; I cannot forget the Things I wish to forget.” This brand new tale of science taken to the extremes might make Cicero change his mind as Vincent Price invite us to consider how accountable we are for how well we remember our own past? True Blood - The Comic Books

The True Blood comic books launched on Wednsday, July 21, 2010. The publisher is IDW Publishing. The first issue has 6 covers. There are 4 regular covers A - D and 2 Retailer Incentive covers, a photo variant and a sketch variant. There is also a special San Diego Comic-Con cover.

In April, Alan Ball announced the comic:

And from the July 21 announcement from IDW:

HBO and IDW Publishing are proud to announce the launch of the first-ever comic book series based on the network's hit show True Blood. Available today at San Diego Comic-Con and comic retailers throughout North America, this sexy, visually striking comic series will add new and unique layers of supernatural drama to the wildly original Emmy®- and Golden Globe®-winning television show. Two exclusive versions of True Blood #1 will be available at San Diego Comic-Con, each with a different cover. Fans can find a special David Messina wrap-around cover at the IDW booth #2643. Select comic retailers throughout the convention will offer a second exclusive cover, featuring a monochromatic version of Joe Corroney's cover.

Developed with the show's Oscar®-and Emmy®-winning creator, Alan Ball (HBO's Six Feet Under, American Beauty), IDW's True Blood series is the exclusive, official show comics.

"I am very excited to be introducing the True Blood comic book series," stated Ball. "These graphic novels are a great companion to the series and we are pleased that the popularity of the show is allowing it to branch out into different mediums."

Beginning with issue #1, the True Blood comic series offers the same erotically-charged romance, wry humor, intriguing mystery and suspense the show has become known for. In this comic book series, Sookie and many other Bon Temps locals find themselves waiting in Merlotte's bar for a strangely portentous raging storm to subside. Soon, they discover they've been trapped by an entity that feeds off of raw emotions and begins killing off the patrons one by one until his hunger is sated.

The plot was developed with Ball, along with series writers Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow, and co-written by David Tischman and Mariah Huehner. Beautifully illustrated by top tier artist David Messina, the series captures all the bloody details and sexy reveals of this exciting new adventure. Renowned artists J. Scott Campbell, Joe Corroney, and Andrew Currie join Messina in providing covers for the first issue.

The True Blood comics will explore the ongoing adventures of telepathic heroine Sookie Stackhouse, her vampire lover Bill Compton, best friend Tara Thornton, enigmatic and ancient vampire sheriff Eric Northman, loyal boss Sam Merlotte, brother Jason Stackhouse, perpetual-virgin vampire Jessica, and the flamboyant cook Lafayette Reynolds.

The covers are gorgeous:
