Laserdial

"This is the XXI Century Sundial, created by Alessandro using an Arduino microcontroller, a wall, and a laser.
This is a simple project of a sundial wherein the pinion is replaced by a line LASER I took from a LASER level. The LASER is mounted on a RC servo which in turn is driven by a micro controller. The micro controller keeps the time and turns the RC servo accordingly. ... Shorting pins 1-2 adds some life to the sundial and makes it count just the seconds. Hypnotic initially, then pointless.

Originally put together using an Atmel controller, it is "very basic in design it does exactly what I wanted," Alessandro writes."

New Clock & Gauge Robots from Bennett Robot Works

New Clock & Gauge Robots from Bennett Robot Works
A fantastic new collection of robot sculptures from Bennett Robot Works of Bridgehampton NY. Handbuilt by Gordon Bennett from a mixture of found objects both old and new. The parts are found in varous places including garbage dumps, basements, construction sites and garage sales.

They are inspired Norman Bel Geddes and Raymond Loewy whose visions of the "Modern Age" helped shape industrial design of the 40's and 50's. Each robot takes about a month to build, range in height from 14" to 36" (inches) and priced between $750 and $6000. Each is a unique one-of-a-kind sculpture and receives its own numbered metal tag.

Clock Wise - Rare Vintage Patek Philippe Solar Clock & A Homemade Etch-A-Sketch Clock

Two 1960s Patek Philippe Solar clocks to be auctioned at the upcoming Antiquorum Important Collectors' Wristwatches, Pocket Watches and Clocks in Geneva. The full catalog here-->Link

Estimate: 3,600 USD - 5,400 USD (2,500 EUR - 3,700 EUR)
Auction-->Link

Previously auctioned 1960 Patek "Pendulette" Solar Clock
(or the "R2D2" as I like to call it)
Sold for approx $7000 in 2007->Link

From the Timezone history of the Patek light-powered clock-->Link

"By contemporary standards, the Patek light-wound clock is a technological anomaly and peculiarly primitive. It combines what were, in 1950, state-of-the-art electronics (including very expensive photoelectric cells) with a traditional Patek mechanical hand-wound movement.

To place the light-wound clock in historical perspective, 1950 was also the year that Patek introduced the Gyromax balance wheel, which at the time seemed an important development for the future of the wristwatch. It would be only two years later that Patek would introduce a "fully electronic clock, i.e. without moving parts," and still another year--1953--before Patek introduced its first automatic wristwatch. Just a year after the automatic Patek introduced the first "nuclear-powered" timepiece, "deriving its energy from a radio-active isotope." And finally, in 1958, Patek produced its first quartz-controlled clock. This is an interesting history for a company that is, today, so strongly associated with conservative and traditional mechanical wristwatches."

And now for something completely different...

Angela Yuan, a young NYC mechanical engineer has built a fun little clock from an Etch A Sketch toy. Each minute that passes, the machine tilts the toy, shakes it clean, and mechanically draws the correct time.

Miniature Brazilian Horological Motorcycle Art

Miniature Brazilian Horological Motorcycle ArtBrazilian, Jose Geraldo Reis Pfau and his miniature motorcycles made entirely of watch parts. The cases, movements, crystals, bracelets and bands are regurgitated into very appropriate representations of every conceivable style of motorbike.

57 year old Pfau makes the miniatures on the weekends as a hobby. His passion for motorcycles began in the sixties with the 1969 film, "Easy Rider." As stated on his website, "It is a personal collection and they are not for sale yet, but he hopes to be able to sell them in the future. He owns more them 200 miniatures at the moment. In the beginning the pieces were applied on wood frames to be hung on walls. They then became three-dimensional pieces, developing into sculptures as shown here."

Featuring everything from vintage bikes, dirt bikes, hogs, and choppers. There is even a series of famous movie bikes like the Harley Davidson "Captain America" from Easy Rider and the Norton 500 from The Motorcycle Diaries.

DIY Clock Design Competition at FurniCreations

DIY Clock Design Competition at FurniCreations
Here's a DIY clock design competition from FurniCreations.com. You must buy an LED clock kit from their website directly ($24) or you can print out their cut-out version for free.

I asked Mike Giles, owner of the Montreal based FurniCreations, for additional information in regards to the decision making process and what the winner can expect to receive; "On January 1st, 2008 (the competition deadline) we will be adding a voting system to the "show us your skills" gallery which will allow the general public to select their favorite design, once it is selected, the design will be added to our Spring lineup, crediting the designer and they will receive 50% of the profit on each piece that is sold of their design."

Here's an example of their clocks and how they're made-->Link

Wheel of Fortune - Opus 7 by Andreas Strehler

Wheel of Fortune - Opus 7 by Andreas StrehlerThese are the biggest couple of weeks in the watchmaking world. The yearly horological orgy and pissing contest is back for the 2007 BaselWorld Watch Fair and the Geneva SIHH.

With that said, I'll be featuring anything particularly interesting in the coming weeks so stay tuned...

For starters, one of the more anticipated models to come out is the secretive Opus 7 project with Andreas Strehler. An unexpected choice for watchmaker partly due his previous minimalistic creations. At first glance, the Opus dial appears to have flying buttresses made of metallic squid. Upon further examination, you learn that the simple but complex system for its three alternating functions. One press of the pusher within the crown displays the hours, a second, the minutes, and a third push shows the power reserve up to 60 hours. All this is exhibited on just one disc with only two rows of digits. Each display is separate from one another so glancing down is out of the question, you gotta take the time to spin this wheel of fortune.

Wheel of Fortune - Opus 7 by Andreas StrehlerOne of only 50 models produced. The case is 45mm wide of rhodium plated white gold.
